I was born in 1992 but prior to this 1988 news report in 1987 my uncle was murdered on Vermont and 74th or 76th Street. I see the elderly woman in this news report and see her as no different than my grandmother who went through the same thing as her with the loss of my uncle. It’s sad how common of a story this was in South Los Angeles during the 1980s and how so many of our families in South L.A. did not make it out of the 1980s unscathed from gun violence and/or drug addiction. Both of which affected family members of mines who grew up in South L.A. during this infamous era.
