But again, ignoring that, he's only used, lowballing, about 5 years, assuming he spent quite a bit training it before fighting Uvogin, and highballing 10 years, assuming he's constantly getting emotional and therefore activating it in his downtime, ie, crying himself to sleep or something, but even then, he's got 50 good years left at minimum

Kurapika’s trading 1 second of Emperor Time for 1 hour off his life. And since some of his chains require Emperor Time, it’s guaranteed that he’ll be throwing away most of his lifespan. Also, it’s a Specialization ability, only provided by his Scarlet Eyes.

All that time, Emperor Time was running, for a total of 12 hours (369). So besides the 1 sec of ET for 1 year of life, ET also strains him if he uses it for 3 hours, and he's down almost 5 years of his life just from that day's use. Add some of his chain abilities require ET just to work and he's been using it since getting Nen, so Kurapika has been really cutting his lifespan down. He'll continue to do so whenever he needs his more powerful Nen abilities.

I don't think he plans to live after his revenge, that's why he always takes those high risk/high reward decisions, for him family, restoring the Kurta clan, etc would be pointless if he doesn't avenge them first and since dying by his own power or being killed by one of his very many enemies is the most likely outcome stuff like that would be like planning what to do after your own funeral.
Main difference is that he know it would be stupid to use it all the time so he limits it’s use to the bare minimum as it’s 1 hour lost per second used
Mostly because that was a trope from before anime even existed, with even some Greek legends having the trope as well. It combines both the self-sacrifice that is expected of a great hero with the intrigue of overwhelming focus on completing an objective/gaining power. As the saying goes "Power at a price", and there is no priced more steep than your time left on this Earth. Plus by making it lifespan instead of just outright paying their life right then and there, the writers leave themselves open to continue to use the character and their enhanced power in more creative ways instead of having them have a single swan song of a battle.

Actually, Nen users can evolve their Nen through strong emotions or because of special circumstances besides. We are explicitly told that Conjurers and Manipulators have a slight chance to evolve Specialist Nen and we are shown two characters that have evolved their Nen (a couple more if you count certain Nen users creating Hatsu on the spot... but I'm not counting them personally because these tend to still be within the realm of their affinities). Kurapika, being a natural Conjurer, evolved "Emperor Time," a Specialist ability, through strong emotions and also because his Nen fluctuates when his scarlet eyes invoke. This is easily explained and was told to us as a possiblity since conjurers are next to specialists on the affinity table. Biscuit Krueger, a natural Transmuter, somehow evolved her Nen through her strong desire to not be herself "physically." Her ability to transform seems to be a Specialist ability, but we simply don't know if thats the case because she herself doesn't know what it is and no one has an explanation for it (it could be a combination of Nen types being used in conjunction, but otherwise its a mystery). We aren't given an explanation that I'm aware beyond her strong desire and we can't fall back on the Nen affinity chart because the only Nen types to be said to at least have the chance evolve Specialist abilities doesn't include Transmuters in that list.
That never works, though. It's basically what writers do when they want to add a dramatic touch to a character using their powers without it ever actually being an issue in any fight.

@@SAGHEAlluka is a weird point. While they did save Gon, it wasn't consequence free as Gon lost his nen, and pretty much has been written out of the story (for the time being) because of it. Not to mention while Alluka still exists in the story, I doubt they're going to have a role in the current arc any time soon. Instead if Kurapika ends up being put into a critical state due to his ability, it is likely that there will be a legit quest needed to save him like there was one technically for Gon rather than having the wish granter pop in, and there will likely still be a lasting consequence because of it. We'll have to wait and see if it will matter at all however.

Or something that affects the user of the technique AND his opponent. Or maybe just improve a lot in mastering Nen (this thing, Kurapika can't afford, because if he trains with his chain ability it means that he has red eyes and so it takes less hours for his life expectancy)

Netero is solely an enhancer, but he's basically the top dog enhancer shown so far. His buddhisatva is not a conjured technique but most likely a peak form of emmission, supercharged by his restriction to always pray before he does any form of attack. Basically Netero is the product of training your affinities to their fullest whilst adding an arguably reasonable restriction.

The contract is not only that it shortens his lifespan, but also it can only be used against members of the Phantom Troupe, or else the technique will kill him.

You can rewatch episode 55, Kurapika said that initialy, yes he thought of 2 chains for The Spiders but he change opinion and Judgement is for everyone. If i remember correctly, the only reason he's losing his lifespan everytime he uses his abilities is because he set it up that way. He only wanted to use the abilities against the phantom troup, so he set it that way at the cost of his lifespan. You and a lot of people are wrong about Kurapika powers, didn't understand correctly.... Episode 55, York Shin City... He said only ONE chain is for the Troupe. And even if you still think otherwise, he litteraly used the others chains in Yorkshin on somoene else lmao 💀 Episode 40, the chain who can detect lies or search something on the map, he use that chain on a Bodyguard of Nostard Family. Episode 47, his fight against Uvo... He had a chain for healing HIMSELF. Episode 51, the same at episode 40, he used it on map for the search on Neon, daughter of Nostrad Family boss. Judgement Chain, the one who can set condition. Initialy, she was only for the Troupe, he said this in Episode 55, but he change opinion and he can use it on everyone, he could have done it on Gon if Kurapika was agree for set a condition, like Gon ask. And in the manga, after the anime, we see the last chain he didn't use and... OH she isn't only for the Troupe, surprise !!! When I watched that scene when he explained the details of his chains, I was both amazed by the ability and power, and I was also shocked. I mean, him being so dedicated that much that he's willing to sacrifice his life for the sake of his goal. It's like the saying from Spider Man, 'With great power, comes a great responsibility'. The needle in his heart, the condition of it, gosh.
Kurapika is essentially the main character right now. From the moment the anime ended, all the way to even the most recent chapters (and well into the future), Kurapika is the MC.
Imagine the Kurta clan as nen users. Could it be that their ancestors knew of this property of their scarlet eyes so they secluded themselves to not be used by others? So much lore we still have no answer to. I hope Togashi continues to be able to create this art!

In the 2009 version Kurapica's nen teacher mentions about gaining further power by imposing restrictions on the nen abilities. So anyone can basically do it, at a price.
It doesn’t break the rules at all. It just defines them. It’s the inherit nature of the Nen power system. No one is overpowered. They are just creative with their limitations and they can always surpass their limitations by making a deal whether that be with themselves or Nen itself no one is born with the abilities they have they designed them and with the sheer uniqueness of all the characters abilities I think we forget that

Super minor correction: He doesn't enter Emeperor Time necessarily when his eyes turn red, rather, the former is a requirement and he chooses whether or not to use the ability. He may maintain the ability even after his eyes are back to normal, also.

It actually works based on his max level as a conjurer but allows him to go beyond that max level. As a normal conjurer the best he could do with a manipulation technique is lvl 6 at 60% effectiveness. This is the absolute peak conjurer, most wont ever make it to max stats and or even bother training in something outside their affinity that far. Emperor Time allows him to use a lvl 6 ability at 100% effectiveness now without having to train up to his peak. He gets to go to his max and a bit beyond for lifespan exchange. Hes basically on borrowed time but he gets to be a perfect nen user in the that time based as a conjurer.
Isn’t the reason why he was able to use almost every nen type was because of the rule he made making his nen abilities so much more powerful plus the scarlet eyes, the rule was to only be able to use these nen abilities against the spiders, this was put in place when Kurapakia talked to gons dad (main characters dad) in the forest
Nen is by far... One of the most balance systems in Manga, some may say: well explain Emperor Time. It still fits in Nen, High Power High Risk, the more you limit, give, shorten or simple the ability is that what you get on exchange, Emperor Time give you a massive power boost and power umbrella... At the same time is consuming your life in exchange
One fact I always appreciated was really gor how weak Kiripika was at the time, his resolve and contract were so strong he was able to take down Uvoken almost with ease.. something in the writing of Hunter Hunter is really special because they are always thro8ng stuff out there to throw you off. Netero was an Inhancer and at that was and could have been one of the best in History. But instead he chose a category on the Excat opisite side of the spectrum.. shown by the entire show to be the worse decision and weakest it would make you.. Hisoka in Heaven Areana when first introduced to Nen was excatly Highliting this and shows how it limits you and you need to be who you are instead.. For a show to go so far out of it's way to set this up, then chooses one of the Strongest characters to pick His weakest catagory.category.. and Be that much of a Beast just becase his will of the contract was that strong.. Amazing writing man.
Something about this theme is that it drifts away from Dr Fetus. The original doesn't feel like a Forest because it focuses on the violence of what Dr Fetus is doing. Actually, Nen users can evolve their Nen through strong emotions or because of special circumstances besides. We are explicitly told that Conjurers and Manipulators have a slight chance to evolve Specialist Nen and we are shown two characters that have evolved their Nen (a couple more if you count certain Nen users creating Hatsu on the spot... but I'm not counting them personally because these tend to still be within the realm of their affinities).
Kurapika, being a natural Conjurer, evolved "Emperor Time," a Specialist ability, through strong emotions and also because his Nen fluctuates when his scarlet eyes invoke. This is easily explained and was told to us as a possiblity since conjurers are next to specialists on the affinity table.
Biscuit Krueger, a natural Transmuter, somehow evolved her Nen through her strong desire to not be herself "physically." Her ability to transform seems to be a Specialist ability, but we simply don't know if thats the case because she herself doesn't know what it is and no one has an explanation for it (it could be a combination of Nen types being used in conjunction, but otherwise its a mystery). We aren't given an explanation that I'm aware beyond her strong desire and we can't fall back on the Nen affinity chart because the only Nen types to be said to at least have the chance evolve Specialist abilities doesn't include Transmuters in that list.

That never works, though. It's basically what writers do when they want to add a dramatic touch to a character using their powers without it ever actually being an issue in any fight.

@@SAGHEAlluka is a weird point. While they did save Gon, it wasn't consequence free as Gon lost his nen, and pretty much has been written out of the story (for the time being) because of it. Not to mention while Alluka still exists in the story, I doubt they're going to have a role in the current arc any time soon. Instead if Kurapika ends up being put into a critical state due to his ability, it is likely that there will be a legit quest needed to save him like there was one technically for Gon rather than having the wish granter pop in, and there will likely still be a lasting consequence because of it. We'll have to wait and see if it will matter at all however.

One of which restores you 100% too.

Alluka was already long since part of the story. Theyre one of the calamities of the dark continent and they may be OP in nen but what they can do is already what normal ass humans in the known world can do.

Most of the time, in Nen, if you want to improve a point on one of your techniques, you have to give yourself a malus.
Or something that affects the user of the technique AND his opponent.
Or maybe just improve a lot in mastering Nen (this thing, Kurapika can't afford, because if he trains with his chain ability it means that he has red eyes and so it takes less hours for his life expectancy)
And this is why i love kurapika and other reasons too-
Netero was an enhancer, but used his abilities to enhance all other nen types making him also 100% accross the board.

@@LivingTheorem well when I looked up what type of nen he had on wiki, this is what popped up. It's supposedly what he did for those 50 years of punching training.
Netero is solely an enhancer, but he's basically the top dog enhancer shown so far. His buddhisatva is not a conjured technique but most likely a peak form of emmission, supercharged by his restriction to always pray before he does any form of attack. Basically Netero is the product of training your affinities to their fullest whilst adding an arguably reasonable restriction.

If i remember correctly, the only reason he's losing his lifespan everytime he uses his abilities is because he set it up that way. He only wanted to use the abilities against the phantom troup, so he set it that way at the cost of his lifespan. Its been a long while since Ive watched Hunter x Hunter, so if im 100% wrong on this, Im open to corrections.

Episode 55, York Shin City... He said only ONE chain is for the Troupe.

Episode 40, the chain who can detect lies or search something on the map, he use that chain on a Bodyguard of Nostard Family.
Episode 47, his fight against Uvo... He had a chain for healing HIMSELF.
Episode 51, the same at episode 40, he used it on map for the search on Neon, daughter of Nostrad Family boss.
Judgement Chain, the one who can set condition. Initialy, she was only for the Troupe, he said this in Episode 55, but he change opinion and he can use it on everyone, he could have done it on Gon if Kurapika was agree for set a condition, like Gon ask.
And in the manga, after the anime, we see the last chain he didn't use and... OH she isn't only for the Troupe, surprise !!! He used it on a Nen user AND a non-Nen user 👍

Kurapika has set a condition that every time his his eyes are red/scarlet, so he must have his eyes like that for using all the chains with their own ability, and the condition with is eye is simple :
For every seconds he turns his eye red he lost hours from his lifespan...
So... He turns his eyes red for TEN SECONDS ONLY = TEN HOURS LESS from his life.
20 seconds = 20 hours less
60 seconds so only one minute... = 2 days and 12 hours...
And in the current arc, he suddenly collapsed and was sleeping for around 12 hours with his eyes red, so it was not days here... it was YEARS LESS... + you count everytime he was in scarlet eyes mod in Yorkshin City arc...💀

When I watched that scene when he explained the details of his chains, I was both amazed by the ability and power, and I was also shocked. In the 2009 version Kurapica's nen teacher mentions about gaining further power by imposing restrictions on the nen abilities.
So anyone can basically do it, at a price.
It doesn’t break the rules at all. It just defines them. It’s the inherit nature of the Nen power system. No one is overpowered. They are just creative with their limitations and they can always surpass their limitations by making a deal whether that be with themselves or Nen itself no one is born with the abilities they have they designed them and with the sheer uniqueness of all the characters abilities I think we forget that

Super minor correction: He doesn't enter Emeperor Time necessarily when his eyes turn red, rather, the former is a requirement and he chooses whether or not to use the ability. He may maintain the ability even after his eyes are back to normal, also.

Chrollo's condition is when he have to steal an ability, the only condition after that is that the one he stole the ability from have to stay alive.

It actually works based on his max level as a conjurer but allows him to go beyond that max level.
As a normal conjurer the best he could do with a manipulation technique is lvl 6 at 60% effectiveness. This is the absolute peak conjurer, most wont ever make it to max stats and or even bother training in something outside their affinity that far. Emperor Time allows him to use a lvl 6 ability at 100% effectiveness now without having to train up to his peak. He gets to go to his max and a bit beyond for lifespan exchange. Hes basically on borrowed time but he gets to be a perfect nen user in the that time based as a conjurer.
I love Nen. Best power system in anime.

Isn’t the reason why he was able to use almost every nen type was because of the rule he made making his nen abilities so much more powerful plus the scarlet eyes, the rule was to only be able to use these nen abilities against the spiders, this was put in place when Kurapakia talked to gons dad (main characters dad) in the forest
They have leaning nen types now. kurapika leans to specialization at 50% I believe, explaining how he goes mode emperor.

To be fair, considering the people he's up against, his power is on the weaker side.
Nen is by far... One of the most balance systems in Manga, some may say: well explain Emperor Time.
It still fits in Nen, High Power High Risk, the more you limit, give, shorten or simple the ability is that what you get on exchange, Emperor Time give you a massive power boost and power umbrella... At the same time is consuming your life in exchange
One of my favorite moments in anime is when Kurapika first uses this ability to kill Uvogin. It's genuinely such a badass moment.
One fact I always appreciated was really gor how weak Kiripika was at the time, his resolve and contract were so strong he was able to take down Uvoken almost with ease.. something in the writing of Hunter Hunter is really special because they are always thro8ng stuff out there to throw you off.
Netero was an Inhancer and at that was and could have been one of the best in History. But instead he chose a category on the Excat opisite side of the spectrum.. shown by the entire show to be the worse decision and weakest it would make you.. Hisoka in Heaven Areana when first introduced to Nen was excatly Highliting this and shows how it limits you and you need to be who you are instead..
For a show to go so far out of it's way to set this up, then chooses one of the Strongest characters to pick His weakest catagory.category.. and Be that much of a Beast just becase his will of the contract was that strong..

The original doesn't feel like a Forest because it focuses on the violence of what Dr Fetus is doing. It screams chainsaws spinning and engines roaring

Emperor time has to be activated, and the prequesite is the red eyes. He doesn't activate the ability automatically upon getting red eyes
