  • Here's a walk thru of an Automatic transmission service on a 2008 BMW X3 E83. The 2008 has a 6 speed GM transmission that uses Dexron VI automatic transmission fluid. You'll need 6-7 quarts of replacement fluid, the filter, pan gasket and a few other items you can find here:
    2008 BMW X3 transmission change kit (includes replacement fluid, filter, pan gasket, hardware, O ring, drain plug
    amzn.to/2cqwMaZ
    Other items used:
    Gasket eraser - amzn.to/2cljw9e
    Form a Gasket - amzn.to/2cMKVhw

    How did the transmission work on over the years after this service?

    • @cthompson0531
      @cthompson0531  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The transmission on this car always ran well. Crisp, precise shifts as you'd expect on a BMW. My problems were more around air intake leaks that throw the air fuel ratio mix off. Once you get all the issues squared away, this car is a lot of fun to drive. Thanks for the question.

    IMPORTANT!!! THIS WAS NOT MENTIONED HERE.
    You have to top fluid level off WHILE THE VEHICLE IS ON AMD TRANS WARM.
    THIS IS IMPERATIVE
    Otherwise I could not get all the fluid back in.
    With engine running and trans warm you should have small drizzle coming out of fill plug.
    To check your fluid level in trans, warm car up, pull the fill plug.
    If nothing comes out at all, add more untill it comes out a little.
    BOOM
    Took FOREVER to learn this

      For us blue collar people who love our BMWs but hate paying traditional BMW maintenance cost, these types of videos are priceless. Just reading up on the forums and then watching videos has saved me to date about $6,400 in costs verses having the dealer do it. Your video is good because it keeps it simple...sometimes you find videos that are over complex, have stupid music and ads or just too much "fluff". Keep making them and hopefully whatever German part breaks or fails next, you got a video to replace it!

Used a Stethoscope, put the car up on all fours and found a loose o2 sensor post Cat. I thought it might have been the Cat, Torque converters Transmission or T, Case but was happening at a certain rpms 1150 to 1400 in P, N, D and Reverse. Never would have thought but was happy with that find.👍

    Thank you for this great video. I drive BMW x3 07 European model with a GM 6L45 automatic transmission. At at 116000Km the yellow transmission malfunction light came on the then went off upon switching the engine then reappeared after driving the car 200km. So decided to charge the transmission with 4.7l of dexron iii automatic transmission oil with the help of your video. After changing the oil when the oil had warmed up the warning light popped up so I decided to scan the vehicle then the went off after clearing the faults upon warming up the engine it came on when checked on the scanner it read that the transmission position sensor was faulty I have looked for this under but I can't locate it. Would advise me on how to go about it? Thank you for your support.

    • @cthompson0531
      @cthompson0531  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s correct. When the engine is running, the torque converter is spinning. The fluid stays in because of the centripetal force. If the engine isn’t running, the fluid level is higher and it comes out if you remove the fill screw. Now the fluid level is lower, be sure to top it off when it’s running again. Good luck. 👍

    • @cthompson0531
      @cthompson0531  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you're suggesting is more of a transmission flush rather than fluid & filter change. You will get more old fluid out with this approach but read more about transmission flushes and I bet you'll decide against it. Sometimes a flush will actually make your transmission start slipping depending on the condition of the transmission clutches. To summarize, I'm a fan of the fluid & filter change rather than a full flush, good luck and let us know how it goes!
