Yeah, Ariana said it’s about wanting to be with mac after he died but was dating Pete. They broke up shortly after writing this song. The song also samples a Mac Miller song “2009”

Ariana had a relationship with Mac Miller and they broke up. He ended up passing away shortly after, and Ariana was at the time engaged to Pete, but she obviously still had strong feelings for Mac which I’m sure affected her then current relationship
