To hard to watch...when I was Shanghai we had a chance to visit a factory, it was terrible in what condition the people had to work and most of them in their early teens ! We could not give any comments...shocking !
20:10 the way the young man (Mingk)stood up and walked off camera when his father mentioned going home, and that "your grandmother has been asking for you..."
I really felt empathy for him at that moment and could feel his shame, he felt worthless due to his lack of success in the big city. He knew that as a sick man, unable to generate income, he would've been a burden on his family. That really gave me pause for thought, very sad situation for any young man to face.
Then, seconds later the narrator said that he committed suicide by jumping from the 12th storey of the hospital... All I could think about was his Granny back in the village hearing the news of his suicide and being heartbroken, her heart literally aching. He truly believed that his worth was measured in money, he would rather not exist than bear the shame of being dependent on the family. Rich or poor, employed or unemployed, I cannot imagine that his Granny loved him any less, in trying to avoid being a burden, he destroyed the integrity of his whole family unit. Truly tragic, I'm typing this long rambling comment with a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes.
I was suicidal at times during my youth. My parents were neglectful mostly but sometimes emotionally abusive and told me that I was useless and a burden on them (we were not poor, I went to private school but was told daily that we would be homeless soon and other false scare stories that kept me awake every night. I wasn't brave enough to jump out of a window but tried hanging myself from my bunk bed, more than once I burst blood vessels in my eyes from the extreme blood pressure created by the noise tightening. I would always panic and lift myself up before losing consciousness - my mother caught me red faced removing the noose and said "you're so f%cking pathetic you can't even top yourself properly".... She was right (fortunately).
My Granny lived in a different city and I only saw her occasionally but I always felt comfortable at her house, it was the only place where I could actually fall asleep at night, I knew that she loved me unconditionally and somehow it was enough to give me the strength to keep going and pretend, at school, that I was OK.
My gran found out that I was suicidal and had a talk with me, she explained that if anything happened to me that she would probably die soon after from a broken heart. Anything I did to hurt myself was going to hurt her 10x more and that her great grandparents survived famine so that I could be alive today. To commit suicide would be an insult to all our ancestors and that she didn't want to go to heaven if I wasn't going to be there with her one day. (Catholic belief that suicide means u go to hell & she truly believed that).
So, I promised her that I would never kill myself. That promise definitely saved my life several times and I was able to comfort my Gran during her last weeks on earth, days before she left us, she reminded me of that promise and said that it still applies even after she dies.
So, the pure, unconditional, non judgemental love that only a Grandmother can give to a young boy/ man saved my life.
If only Mingk could have made it home sooner, he might have felt that love and found the strength to fight his illness and to fight for compensation for his occupational illness.
I just keep imagining his Gran getting the news and then never feeling happy ever again.
To anybody who is in a dark place, so dak that suicide feels like the only way to relieve the pain.... Stop! Stop and think for a moment about your grandparents (dead or alive) and imagine the total destruction of their heart, their whole life's purpose being ripped away from them.
Just hang in for another day, we can always commit suicide tomorrow if we want to... The option is always there - BUT- the option to reverse our actions does not exist.... Do not take permanent measures to try and fix temporary problems.
Please excuse my long rambling comment... I just had to share my feelings, this story really triggered some emotional memories.

Wow, what an incredible documentary. The human story really touched my heart and it is painful to see Communist China that is supposed to be a workers paradise failing at its fundamental duty to serve and protect the Chinese workers. I think President Xi should confirm China's position as a responsible state that puts people first in its industrialization approach. Afterall, what good is a country if the government policies are hurting and killing its citizens. I fully sympathize with the injured workers and their families who are suffering along with them ❤.
Xi Jinping has cracked down a lot on corruptions in China. This includes Foxconn's complication in several high-level bribery cases in the cities where they built the factory in.

While this abuse of workers definitely happened up to 2014, be aware that as of 2014, Apple stated that it would Stop using both benzene and N-hexane in making both parts and in final assembly of electronics in China. I found articles about this, but they either dated to 2014, 9 years ago, or were not dated. I clicked on links to join petitions, but the links had expired.
While dry serious injuries occurred, this problem appears to have mostly disappeared--at least with Apple.
It would be basically be up to Foxconn to make that happen, they still make PCBs for Apple as far as I know and because of their size they can be part of setting the standard for the whole industry.

Great documentary; there must be independent or international bodies to investigate and solve this kind of pronlems and not leave it corrupted governments. Poor workers and families always suffer all around the world.

Toluene is used now instead of the benzene on most countries, it is much much less cancerogenic. Benzene is oxidized to phenol in human body . witch is very toxic. Toluene oxidized to benzoic acid, that is not toxic.

By now most (maybe even all) of these poisoned workers portrayed in the documentary may have died already. I wonder if the working conditions have improved since then and what they are like right now. Have the rights of the workers improved? I can imagine these companies will no longer allow reporters to film their production lines...

The woman disabled by banned industrtrial solvents aren't useless as they've depreciated themselves. They are victims of a primitive and corrupt industrial culture and they should be properly compensated by all the companies involved in the manufacturing process.

China is the strangest "socialist" country that has ever existed. Part of the reason it's lasted so long and has done so well is because, unlike the USSR, Cuba, and others, it poses absolutely zero threat to capitalism and the global elites. The world's rich had something to worry about when the USSR was around. The ruling class of the US in particular still lives in fear of Cuba's influence spreading to the rest of the Americas.
But the only threat China poses is that they'll do capitalism better than the west.
In 2016 President Obama opened the relation and visited Cuba. Trump closed the door because he wanted to get more votes from the anti-communist Cuban Immigrants in Florida. There are too many fancy videos about China on TH-cam. A shiny place requires a lot of cheap labor to maintain it. This is how the world works, the majority are enslaved by the minority, sadly.

To answer your question.. No it is not dangerous to open a smartphone 'Box'
Those chemicals are solvents used to clean any greasy fingerprints off the screen. They are chosen specifically because they evaporate very fast. So it is wiped on with a wet cloth, and almost instantly evaporates and it can quickly be seen if the screen is clean or not.
Once evaporated it will blow away with any breeze, and the components are then transported to the main factory for assembly. So it has plenty of time to air out before reaching you.
Only if you breathe in quite a lot of strong vapours will it cause Leukaemia a cancer of the white blood cells.
I know this because my friend used to manufacture old fashioned steel toolboxes. They were dipped in paint. The paint had a thinner solvent called Xylene mixed into it. But the xylene had a permissible contamination of 0.02% Benzine. Sadly the fumes were so thick and Benzine such a powerful carcinogen, my friend got Leukaemia and was in hospital for months.
The toolbox were safe to use when the paint has dried. Just don't work in the factory and breath the fumes.
I used to work in an automotive parts factory. We maid car seats. The polyurethane foam pads, under the cloth that you sit on, was made using TDI Toluene diisocyanate
At low concentration over a long time it can cause asthma respiratory disease. But at higher concentration it is very poisonous and can kill.
There were air quality testing machines constantly sniffing the air. If the background concentration went over 5 parts per million or peaked at 20 ppm. Then an alarm would sound and we would have to evacuate the building.
If that was a fire where the chemicals were stored. Then officially there was supposed to be an evacuation of 25 kilometres around the factory. I doubt that would actually happen because it was populace area. Hundreds of thousands of people would have to get out of town.
This is the price we paid, now Huawei oppo Xiaomi are moving up the food chain… meaning more value added to our own economy, workers are getting better pay and better working conditions nowadays…
