- I wish I was better at this game so I could get some better footage, but that's the best I could do. In case you haven't heard, this is a free-to-play battle royale racing game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch through their online service. It's a similar structure to Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99 and Super Mario Bros. 35. Highly recommend!

It's so addictive, never have I said "one last go" so much in my life 🤗

With the Queen League releasing tomorrow, I have hope that maybe the BS-X tracks and vehicles will make a showing too.
Maybe the GBA Tracks and Vehicles too?
Queen League tomorrow? How do we know?
@@KiraPlaysGuitarit’s been announced on twitter and in the switch news channel.
I think we'll be seeing the BS tracks at some point, but not the machines.
Of the 5 tracks that have been preserved, Mute City IV and Big Blue II would be excellent for FZ99. The other 3 (Sand Storm I/II, Silence II) are also good, but not quite as much of a shoe-in.
Data mining of the original release showed a placeholder file for at least one track named "Forest". So that's giving us hope that we'll see the 5 unpreserved tracks show up.
Have a great rest of your day x 99
You as well brother!
The original F-Zero was one of my favorite SNES games when I had a console as a kindergartner circa 2002-2003. Never knew where that Super Nintendo went, but that game always stuck with me and it’s why I probably enjoy F-Zero 99 so much. Very fun surprise.
Best "SNESSDRUNK" opening yet, it jostled my brain
This leads me to believe you did not see the video where it was like 5 minutes of I'm saying one long snesdrunk
Really appropriate one too.
Doppler effect!
It was agreeably aggressive
My favorite one is the Brinstar intro he made literally years back. If I find the video I gotchu
I've been obsessed with this game since it launched and I'd definitely recommend doing practice mode a couple times for each track. My performance skyrocketed after like 20 minutes of practice.
The skyway boost gets longer the further back you are, and it won't stop if you're rounding a turn or not over the tracks. You can use this to your advantage and time it so you're over a shortcut when it's supposed to run out and get a couple extra seconds.
Lastly, your health bar increases whether you kill a snail car or a player but your health completely replenishes if you kill a player and you can absolutely ride that to victory. The extended health bar stays with you between races in a grand prix and mini prix, so it's a solid strategy to go for kills in the first track or 2 so you have the extra health in the later tracks.
To be honest, I wasn't sure if you were going to review F-Zero 99 or not. I'm glad you did though. I was skeptical at first when it was announced, but now I can't stop playing it. It's pure chaotic fun. For being an F-Zero game that is online and to have more opponents than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it manages to hit 2 birds with one stone. Fortunately there will be more tracks added soon. I hope they add more content from the BS satellaview games or borrow elements from Maximum Velocity on GBA. This game has so much potential to help revive the IP!
I've played a bit of this, 9 times out of ten I make it to the the top 50. Best I did was 3rd, once. Fun as heck. In Grand Prix mode any energy boosts you get from knocking out opponents are maintained for subsequent races. Aim to knock out those guys in the first race to give yourself an advantage. 😉
Thanks for the tip on GP's!
Sometimes it's useful to stay lower in the order early in the Grand Prix and try sneak a few KOs from the backmarkers. From there, a super boost or two can get you into contention for wins with more energy than those who've been up front the whole time.
What I like most is about F-Zero 99 ist that it somehow feels natural, like the original F Zero always should have been exactly this game. Everything aside from the skyways is more or less original. The courses have only been slightly modified, but the different cars still have the same balancing.
Speaking of balancing, it’s amazing how different each car is. all 4 need completely different game plans. Yet each car can win any race. I hope they add the satellaview and maybe the GBA content to this game. Than it’ll be easily one of the most fun racing games out there.
regarding the limited tracks, this weekend they will add around 5 more tracks.
As someone who has absolutely loved F-Zero since I first touched a SNES, and still plays X and GX now and then, I can't express how happy I am seeing just how well F-Zero99 has taken off. Virtually every channel or streamer I follow has done some kind of video on it, Vinesauce has played it multiple times, several Hololive streamers have played it, I really hope this sends a clear enough signal to Nintendo there is still plenty of love and potential for this franchise to keep going.
tbh I think nintendo knew they had a banger to bring back and were just sitting on it for the right time. Agree tho, glad to see people enjoying it. I think It'll get a bunch of dlc for a while to come (hopefully)
@urbobne2254 god not dlc I'm so tired of dlc. Sorry it not it just me tired of content being separated from the main package.
@@Sarahm2261 Updates are DLC too. Also they can free.
I never played the original but been having a lot of fun with this one. Great little game for short, casual sessions!
Enjoy that soundtrack brou
Blow my mind when I played F-Zero from Snes for the first time, the soundtrack, the speed and all the colors were a nice surprise for a young boy who was starting to get familiar in the video game world. And one more time, you did a great job bring novelty and not forgetting to remember the old good days of the 16-bit era.
Most anticipated game for me in years. Here's to future F Zero titles
I am terrible at this game lol. It's still really fun. So chaotic.
F-Zero blew my mind back in '91 and it remains one of my favorites SNES games to this day. I will have to check this one out, as it looks like pure, chaotic fun.
I just want to say that I really appreciated the intro you used here; good stuff.
I heard that new routes from the Queen's League are coming this weekend and then the rest in mid-October and probably another battle royal on a large round map
the original SNES FZERO soundtrack is implanted in my mind, born in 81 these games were my childhood along with hunting and fishing
I was born in ‘97, and I had a Super Nintendo for a short while before it mysteriously disappeared. I still remember basically every piece of music for the tracks thanks to starting with it as a kid.
just a little correction: the grand prix consists of 5 tracks, and the mini grand prix consists of 3. there are also 7 tracks in the game right now, but two of them are exclusive to the hard tracks mode and one of them is exclusive to grand prix.
great game. really fun surprise. approachable to people of all skill levels and has so much of that "just one more race" energy. I just wish there were more tracks though because the game is getting old. also, the NPCs that invade the track on later laps are a frequent annoyance and I find myself crashing out because I hit some gray or red car I had no way to avoid.
To me this feels like THE natural progression of the F-Zero design philosophy. I’m looking forward to more F-Zero games in the future. Until then, I’ll be pouring all my love and time into this even though it’s so hard
I had doubts for what "F-Zero 99" would look like but I'm in awe that they actually made a 99 racer game work. It does feel like the next step from F-Zero X - the boost mechanic is cribbed right from that game, and of course that game had a Grand Prix of 30 unique racers. Nintendo said for years that they weren't interested in making a new F-Zero game because they couldn't make it distinctly fun from Mario Kart; with the addition of the golden sparks mechanic, I think they've finally hit on something to make it accessible and fun for all skill levels in a unique way from Mario Kart.
@@ShadowEl I couldn’t agree more!
I was iffy about F-Zero 99 since at first it looked like Nintendo lazily reusing 30+ year old assets, but you've convinced me to play it. Your video did a good job explaining the basics of the game since I wasn't really sure what this was supposed to be at first. I always wished F-Zero was 2 player, so I guess this kinda adds multiplayer and pumps it up to the extreme.
Read the tips section ingame. It'll really up your game.
@@XanthinZardabest part is, those tips also work for the original game. I immediately knew how to play this game thanks to playing the original about 2 years ago.
HAHAHAH!That "doppler snes drunk" at the beginning got me.^^
"We need more tracks"... posted literally on the day new tracks arrive.
You gotta approach F-Zero like a kart racer
This game was a revelation for me, a childhood dream come true! Not once in the last 5 or so years did I have so much fun with a video game, new or old. I played a lot of F-Zero back in the day and beat it all the way in the hardest difficulty mode. I was amazed that I could recall and apply my decades-old skill in F-Zero 99 and even though it can get very cramped with a lot of players, you can still get very far with good driving technique. I regularly finish in the top 15, got a few first places and my best grand prix total ranking was fifth. Once you make your way to first place, it actually gets very calm and quiet. Love it, thanks for this feature!
I'm so glad this wasn't an actual sequel in the 90's or I would've NEVER gotten any actual sleep. It's incredibly fun and doesn't feel cheap.
Starting my day with your videos is a blessing
I appreciate how short this review is! Straight to the point in just 5 minutes!
First SNES game I bought was F Zero! It was that and Super Mario World for hours and hours! Thanks for the great vid as usual!
Don't know if you've seen the announcement yet, but the first set of new courses goes live TODAY at 8PM Eastern, just over 3 hours from when I'm typing this!
99 Mode:
Mute City II
Port Town I
Red Canyon I
Pro Mode:
White Land II
Death Wind II
Happy to see F-Zero is still on Nintendo's radar. Holding out hope for a port of F-Zero GX!
This is what I always imagined F-Zero to be. A ton of racers all jockeying for the top spot. I'm terrible at this game but I'm having a blast.
Thank you for covering this in less that 5 minutes!
Many others make a 20ish minute video, and I honestly don't care enough!
I'd like Super Mario Kart 99.
The twist being that you race on two courses of a particular theme. So you complete one lap of Mario Circuit 1 then you are teleported to Mario Circuit 2 for one lap before being returned to Mario Circuit 1 for the start of lap 2 and so on. Each of SMK99's courses would have two courses so those original courses with only 1 or 3 versions would have new courses.
I like the game but I definitely miss Mario 35. That was too fun lol
Definitely my favorite of the 99 series so far. Been hoping for this one since Tetris 99 dropped. Great video as always!
It's stupid that they drop older games. I liked Tetris 99, played it for a couple hours and now I want to play it again.
At least they give you something for the subscription.
@@michaelp4122 which ones have been dropped? Tetris 99 been going on since it was released...Mario 35 was limited, but they did say that from the beginning. The only legit one was Pac Man 99, and that's on namco.
Such a fun game; this gives me a little hope for a Tetris Attack / Panel de Pon 99
I love this game. It got me playing my switch again.
Yours is the only review I will listen to about the new hotness, and it's because of your heavenly harmonizing that begins each video
I am literally addicted to this game. It's so so so so soooooo good.
The timing of asking for new tracks in this video couldn't be better lol
Remember when you wish there was 2 players in F-Zero?? Now there's 99
All the SNES tracks are planned to be included, you can confirm this in the Practice Mode screen, where they're all there with just a "???" for the unreleased ones.
Fzero99 is so much fun, I too hope they expand it to more 16 bit franchises
I've been so eager to hear your opinion on this one. I'm glad you covered it. This game is so addictive and I haven't been able to go a day without playing since it came out.
What I really love about F-Zero 99 is that it really nails and hammers in what separates F-Zero from Mario Kart. For me, the two biggest are:
1) Unlike it Mario Kart, if you get hit too many times, you explode and you're kicked out of the race. It's possible to DESTROY your opponents, but they can also destroy you! This is especially poignant for the Grand Prix races.
2) Mario Kart has a maximum of 12 racers per race. Given all the mayhem caused by items, that's probably about the maximum it can handle. F-Zero however, can handle a heck of a lot more. Even in F-Zero X, you had 30 racers in each race. The downside was that 30 people couldn't all be one of the different racers and race at the same time. F-Zero 99 shows that it can be done, however.
The next proper F-Zero game needs to allow for BIG races with LOTS of people all racing at the same time on a single track. If they can take F-Zero 99's method of handling massively multiplayer races and translate that to 3D with the newer F-Zero cast, they'll have something big! It will need to have a single player story/campaign mode like what's been seen in F-Zero GX, but people don't continue to play Mario Kart because of the single player races; they play it for the online multiplayer. Focusing on that will allow F-Zero to last as long as Mario Kart 8 has.
hey drunk thanks for covering this. I really am glad my favorite game series finally got a new game after OVER 20 YEARS.
SNES Drunk in 2028: after Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball 99, I don't really know what else I could want from the 99 series
More tracks ARE coming! Queen League will be added soon and then King League before too long.
Good review! I was never really a huge F-Zero fan, but this looks fun. Seems like this game has really gained popularity across the internet. I would guess Nintendo is just gauging interest in the F-Zero series for a potential comeback on their next console.
Also, imagine, if you will, Super Mario Kart Battle Mode 99 with bigger battle arenas...
I remember taking my SNES to "Show and Tell" with F-Zero when it came out. Everyone loved it.
I'm feeling so low right now in the face of so much hatred and violence against oppressed people (must be a day ending in -y) that hearing you wish me a great rest of my day this morning actually gave me a funny spark of hope.
I know this is a weird comment, but sometimes we don't appreciate the little impacts we have on people. So thanks, and thanks for all your great vids. Your effort is really appreciated.
And I hope you have a great rest of your day, too
I was wondering if you were gonna get to this one! Wish they would add the vehicles from fzero x and some courses from there too
if you KO another racer you get a full boost meter and it extends your meter. if you KO a grey bumper car, it extends your meter and gives a small boost refill, and those meter extensions carry over through grand prix races. It's a super interesting mechanic and gives this game a much higher skill cap- well, that and the fact that each car is tremendously different. Finding your playstyle and your groove is such an important part of this game.
I would kill to see some of the Satellaview F-Zero 2 tracks, or some of the tracks from the GBA games.
2:53 Great video, but a Grand Prix prix is actually 5 races and a Mini Prix 3 races if I remember correctly.
Another great video, Alex! Thank you!
32 years ago now, here in America. Autumn of 1991. Mode 7 has arrived. Nintendo firing on all cylinders...
It was truly a magical time to be alive as a young teen, as a gamer, with a fresh new Super Nintendo Entertainment System fired up ready to go. The sheer excitement and hope we had as kids, while our imaginations ran wild with what we were all heading towards in the gaming sphere; the optimism for the future a lot of us shared in those days. Looking right at the 21st century ahead and the amazing gaming possibilities yet to come! F-Zero embodies all of those feelings and more as it now blasts us into the future once again with F-Zero 99 in 2023!
With a new hope and excitement of something truly fresh and special on the horizon to experience together as gamers one more time, with that amazing smooth 90s synth reverb music we all love playing in the background of course... 💯❤️🏁👍😎 #SNESDrunk #FZero #26thCentury
I love the battle royale games that they've been putting out, but I wish they would still make remix games like NES Remix, too, adding content from other Nintendo consoles.
Really hyped for the Queen cup tracks coming soon.
Best intro "SNES Drunk" ever!
Fun to see dithering in a modern release, although it being a SNES game reimagining
you know, the same day you put out this review the game is getting new tracks today.
Just announced that five new tracks are coming.
Hopefully this continues for a few years instead of just being a limited time thing.
New tracks are coming today at 5pm! And more in october.
I would love if a Star Fox 99 and have it be big space battles where everyone has a custom pilot and ship.
Yea love games like this! It is a classic with new paint! This looks awesome and fun! Nice video Snes!
Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball 99!
I don't own a Switch (I know! I know!) but this is one of those games for it that makes me want to go out right now and buy one.
99 Ken Griffeys in Ken Griffey presents major league baseball.
this same day you posted this video we are getting 5 new tracks!!
Seems like a mix of the massive amounts of cars and the attacks from F-Zero 64, the art style and music from F-Zero and the massive multiplayer from modern platforms. Interesting.
There are almost certainly new tracks coming. If you look into the stats page you can see the Knight League tracks and then there are the queen and king tracks which it says aren't available yet. So I expect we'll get at least 3X the tracks we have currently once the Queen and King leagues become available.
Thank you for covering this game, the one and only SSSSSSSNES Drunk!
Awesome intro!!!
The opening SNES drunk was a good one today
More updated SNES classics, please. This was great.
But only if they work. SMB and Pacman were so bad, they felt forced. Now, Ice Climbers...
The boost thing that can reduce your energy was taken from F-Zero X from N64.
I never had the chance to play this series outside the OG SNES title briefly, but I've been having fun with this game. Currently I'm anaging to place between 50s-30s consistently and I somehow placed in 2nd place one time. I'm really hoping this is a testing ground for genuine interest in the franchise's return (and that they add the new courses they teased soon).
99 Excitebike would be awesome and SO much fun!
Really fun game! I agree with you though, it needs more tracks. I think they will do the classic Nintendo thing where they slowly release them to keep people coming back. I'm hoping the game does well and will lead Nintendo to make a F-Zero X 99, because that would be mind blowing.
I totally forgot about this game being released!!! I'll play it first thing in the morning!
1:53 LOOK GARY THERE I AM
SUPER PLAY ACTION FOOTBALL REFERENCE lmao this is why I love you snesdrunk...I'm drunk right now actually
That F-Zero music makes me wanna run through A BRICK WALLLLL
It does seem like there are more tracks than the original 15 buried in the game's files, and it would be a great opportunity to expand the track list. There's a potential Pawn League, Bishop League, and Rook League to be added to keep with the theme, and a Pawn League would be the perfect spot for more beginner tracks. But I also understand if they wanna wait until they release all the original tracks first, and later add new tracks to suck people back in after a while.
Everyone always picks Mute City anyway 😅
I hope they add an option for graphics from climax or say maximum velocity or at least add more cars to the game than just the SNES ones
Very important for a multiplayer to get back into the action QUICK. Still baffling how many games get that wrong.
3:18 they’re adding new tracks in the upcoming days!
sure someone mentioned it already, but nintendo said more tracks are coming soon! but yes lets hope for new ones!
One crucial part you left out in this review...f-zero rockin soundtrack. Everyone who had played this game is familiar with a couple tunes. Its iconic.
Having grown up on the original, I was able to get into the top 10 or 25 fairly frequently the first weekend this came out. I imagine lots of people have been getting good since then. I wonder what it's going to be like when I jump on this weekend haha
It's tough. I was having so much fun using legacy knowledge to scoop up wins in the first week... now it feels like I have to play super, super sharp to even have a shot at top 5, much less first place. It's great fun, though!
Definitely a lot of pro players out there now, much harder to get a win.
Clearly "Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball 99" is next.
I was waiting for the drunks review on this.. by the way I am hooked on this game!!
They’re going to add new tracks this week 🙌
Maybe not the 99 treatment but Basewars would do awesome with an online update, methinks
Would love this but for Rock n Roll racing!
I really like F-Zero 99. It's almost spooky how well the very first F-Zero works, with clever and well balanced modernisation. Even the charm is here still!
A remaster of GX announced on the Direct would have blown my mind.
I’d honestly probably waste away just getting 100% in a GX remaster. I love that game so much (and obviously the original along with X).
Same, i have nothing against the classic one but gx is just on another level completely
I am 99% sure this is a test to see how receptive a modern audience is to F-Zero seeing as that it's been nearly two decades since the last entry (F-Zero Climax- a 2004 tie-in game to the F-Zero anime, and it never released outside of Japan). I have a feeling that if does well, with people large numbers of people playing it for a long period of time, we might then see a true sequel to X/GX on the next Nintendo console.
This game is very addicting. It's nice to see F-Zero get SOME recognition. Now....about Star Fox.
