『技のトリセツ』DVD届きました！DISC1は『大いなる遺産』の「特典映像:空手講座」と『未来への宝物』の”基本一本””自由一本”や井上先生との虚実でついていけましたが、DISC2の鉄騎初段は空手未経験者には歯応えがありますね。この動画に辿り着きました。これから日本空手協会の多くの型動画が少しでも分かるようになれば楽しそうです。中先生の『武道空手の本質とは』は、用語を調べ調べ読み進めたいです。鉄騎の真似事でもなぞらえられるようになりたいです。

I suspect that some of those little 'pointers' in kata [to open the hips], may be considered errors by some of the Old School. Yet unless we are open to new ideas how can we ever expect make progress?
Once you understand the art to a high degree and actively go out to seek the answers, the masters (the real ones) love that you go ahead and make changes. You've already respected the art. Naka-sensei, I feel has already achieved that to a high degree.
Some purists don't know what they're doing and that's why they're stuck in "tradition." With unrealistic training expectations and whatnot.
In this video series, I think that Naka Sensei wanted to show open-mindedness when encountering other styles. He is, of course, tremendously polite and respectful. It’s one thing to open the hip up (change the foot angle) when one is about to step forward into z-d, whereas when stepping laterally and landing in kiba-dachi then changing the foot angle would just require changing it back when one landed...
M Cron Truth be told, the “old school” referred to by Bill is nothing more than a rebranding of the original. Many of the ways we THINK are old school techniques are shallow and new inventions. Yoko-Geri keage, as a sokutou-geri for example? Never done by Funakoshi-sensei. But his students started doing it for training purposes instead of the original, which was the open-hips front-kick to the side, and it stuck
I do think, it is an error indeed. From a Bunkai POV, you MUST turn on the ball, as there is not enough space to open the hip. The opponent is not miles away. You are litteraly glued to him in that moment.
The Kata has 3 movements because it wants to show you the transition from right to left, then from left to right.
Naka-sensei has a very bad habit of wanting to apply Kata to Kumite.

In kumite competition, we will forget any those technic. In kumite competition everyone is just punching each other, dont care about the beautiful movement of Karate. Only in Kata we can enjoy the beautiful movement of Karate including. You can say, "Kata can also used in fight"? Really? Just look at back the Kumite competition video all around the world!
Kumite Competition has little to do with Kata. You could say that you can enter Kumite Competition with the Kata knowledge of a yellow belt easily.
That's because Kata is ment for self defence, which has a completely different movement range than Competition Kumite.
