This might get a bit involved, but let's have at it. To begin, Tom Scholz was an electrical engineer from MIT. My dad was a mechanical engineer from the same university. Scholtz graduated several years after my dad, but somehow, they met. Before doing so, I was already a huge fan of Boston and had bought the effects racks that Scholtz made to get that awesome sound, all that sustain, distortion, and echo. LOVE it. So as time passed, little to my knowledge, my dad was meeting and talking with Tom at alumni events. In talking about music one day, I brought his name up in conversation. My father said, I know Tom and have talked to him several times. So, to make a long story short, I met Scholz, and he's all of an engineer, genius geek that you could imagine. To this day, I still play these songs at gigs. A LOT of good times have been had with Boston's music. The whole album is great. Keep going, you won't be disappointed.

@Frankincensedjb123 Tom was not and is not an electrical engineer. MIT alumni records are very clear that both of Toms degrees are in mechanical engineering

Honestly, i'd give you half 'a dozen likes if i could. You've got the best reactions. No pauses to describe or explain. No pretenses, just real‐time immersion and response.
I can see how locked in to all the nuances you are. It's just plainly obvious to me that you really love music. Thanks, brother. Keep 'em comin' -

THIS! All week long and twice on Sundays.
It’s become painfully obvious that there are only a handful of Reactors who aren’t panhandling for profit; so when we see someone with an open mind and an attentive ear for music of all types like we were, they stand in stark contrast to the rest.
Great music brings enrichment to the soul and I think JMBOY gets that.

I could not agree with you more...that's one of the reason's I subscribed, he genuinely "LISTENS" to the music, and appreciates the complexities, and knows to listen all the way through, the way "our" music was meant to be heard...Rock ON!

  • @roccaclassico9028
    @roccaclassico9028 ปีที่แล้ว +12

No synthesizers were used on this song or any of the tracks on their first 2 albums. The keyboard is a Hammond organ & the other sounds are from guitar pedals custom-built by Tom Scholz. Next, you should react to "Smokin'" and "Hitch a Ride". 🔥🔥

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@roccaclassico9028 Foreplay features the Hohner Clavinet. Tom is not nor has he ever been into pedals. The Rockman which was not even thought of at the time this record was made is NOT a pedal either. It is a guitar pre-amp with some processing on board. The only pedal that you can hear on this record is the so called hyperspace pedal which if Tom were to be forthright and transparent is an Echo Plex tape loop echo machine that he modified. Ironically other than a few brief effects guitar snippets all of the electric guitar work on these two songs is in fact Barry not Tom.

I'm so glad you are enjoying Boston! This song is a great mix of guitar, organ, and as per usual, phenomenal voice and harmonies. I was looking to see you if reacted to a song, and noticed you have not. Song is Hitch a Ride. That song has what's considered the best outro in music history. And I think it showcases Brad's voice the best, in a rock and roll way. On their 2nd album, Man I'll Never Be is probably displays his voice the best. But I think Hitch a Ride is a bit better in a Rock setting. And Feeling Satisfied is another one from the 2nd album. Well, the whole 2nd album is extremely good, first one still the best.

"Foreplay" has the form of a classical piece called a "toccata" -- compare it to the beginning part of "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" by J.S. Bach. Ol' Tom Scholz was a pretty amazing composer for his day and age. I'm so glad I was alive and young when so much great music was made!

Great observations and yeah this song Totally rules. I can't remember what all you've done from that first Boston album but it's generally regarded as one of the greatest debut albums in rock music history. You could literally work your way through every song and you will be fascinated and it just always sounds and feels so good. I was lucky enough to see them in junior high in the late seventies and it was an amazing show. It was absolutely amazing. And it sounded just as good as on the recording. All the vocal harmonies, the guitar solos everything.

I love "Rock & Roll Band" from this Album as it's so aspirational. That said, there is not a mediocre song on it. Somehow, what Tom envisioned in his mind and created in his basement, is what we were longing to hear.

absolutely my favorite boston song. i listen to this just about every day. btw, there aren't any synthesizers in this song. most of those "space sounds" you heard were played on guitar, although some of the ambience was done with a hammond organ. both guitar and organ were heavily processed with electronic gear designed and built by tom scholz. the man was a musical genius.

    • @neechee5150
      @neechee5150 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@realitybytez, said "both guitar and organ were heavily processed with electronic gear designed and built by tom scholz. the man was a musical genius"
False The heart of the guitar sound is a Marshal SLP tube amp that Tom modified ,a graphic eq pedal and a large variable resistor from a theater lighting system that Tom was using as a power soak. The hammond M3 sounds like a mixture of the leslie rotating speaker and a direct sound. The guitar sounds like a mixture of a direct distorted sound to the console combined with a mic'd up Marshall cabinet and both instruments are very clean with little to no processing on them.

I had a paper route as a teen just so I can buy my favorite music and this album was worn out many times, then CD's and now I wonder how long it will take to wear out my digital album. :) One of the things I remembered as a teen is I loved cover art and it gave me a huge smile when I realized those spaceships were guitars. "Foreplay/Long Time"
It's been such a long time
I think I should be goin', yeah
And time doesn't wait for me
    It keeps on rollin'
Sail on, on a distant highway, yeah
I've got to keep on chasin' a dream
I've gotta be on my way
Wish there was something I could say
    I'm just movin' on
You'll forget about me after I've been gone
(And I take what I find) I don't want no more
It's just outside of your front door
    Ah yeah yeah yeah
It's been such a long time
It's been such a long time
    Well, I get so lonely
    When I am without you
But in my mind, deep in my mind
    I can't forget about you
Good times, and faces that remind me, yeah
I'm tryin' to forget your name
And leave it all behind me
You're comin' back to find me
    I'm just movin' on
You'll forget about me after I've been gone
(And I take what I find) I don't want no more
It's just outside of your front door
    Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah
It's been such a long time
It's been such a long time
    Yeah
It's been such a long time
I think I should be goin', yeah
And time doesn't wait for me
    It keeps on rollin'
There's a long road, I've gotta stay in time with, yeah
I've got to keep on chasin' that dream
Though I may never find it
    I'm always just behind it
    I'm just movin' along
(Takin' my time) hey, just movin' along
(Takin' my time) I'm just takin' my time
    (Takin' my time) yeah
    (Takin' my time) oh

I've never actually liked the "foreplay" aspect of this track, EXCEPT that it makes me appreciate the "Long Time" aspect of it! It is a weird sort of thing. The world is a much sadder place for the loss of Brad Delp. I saw them live maybe 12/13 years ago, and they were pretty good, but they just couldn't compare to what they were once.

On this album, there were no synthesizers. Tom Scholz is an engineering genius. He graduated from MIT. He invented the "Rockman" which is a headphone guitar amplifier, the first of its kind. After its invention, guitarists wouldn't have to plug into a regular amp to practice. They could plug their guitar into the the Rockman on their belt, plug their headphones in and practice without disturbing others. It would also enable them to walk around freely. He also invented the "power soak", which is placed between a guitar amp and one or two guitar speakers. It limits the volume level while still maintaining the desired overdriven saturated sound of an amp operating at full volume. To achieve the space type sound, he used a Hammond B3 organ riff. Scholz has been known to use various types of organs connected to amplifiers with blown tubes to get unique sounds. But he is proud of the fact that he doesn't use synthesizers (even stating that on the back album cover). As to what people have told you about space sounds equals synthesizer, that is generally true. Tom Scholz is the exception.

Tom has been very clear that he only used a Hammond M3 for this record. The so called space sounds are from an echoplex tape echo machine that Tom modified and called the Hyperspace Pedal not from a Hammond. The Rockman is a guitar preamp with some processing and effects on board that was meant to be put in front of a traditional amp, used as a pre amp DI direct into the console or used as a preamp to practice and monitor via the head phones. There is not one sound from a Rockman or Rockmodule or any component of the Rockman on this record. The heart of the guitar sound on this record is a Marshall SLP tube amp that Tom modified, a graphic eq pedal and a large variable resistor taken from a theater lighting system that Tom modified and later called a power soak

I have a good one by The Allman Brothers called " Whipping Post" and some by Styx called "Renegade" and "Suite Madame Blue." and "Crystal Ball". They have more good songs on the Grand Illusion album. "School" by Supertramp is really good.
