Sometimes going into a movie completely blind is just the most fun. I had NO idea what this film was, plot wise or even the genre. Only the lead actress and this did not disappoint me one iota.
This style film might be my favorite to react to. Or maybe I was just hyped from eating the cheeseburger right before recording.
Either way, enjoy! I hope you enjoyed my The Menu (2022) movie reaction & commentary

Original Movie: The Menu (2022)
Let me know what YOU thought of The Menu. Be sure to subscribe for upcoming reactions to Identity, Speed, and The Godfather!
I adored this film. I'm a suckered for black comedy and I just couldn't stop laughing.
A subtle detail/clue thats easy to miss. When Erin/Margot is looking at Chef's photos, the camera briefly focuses on a cook behind Finnes in the first photo. That cook is the coast guard fella that shows up next scene.
the wife knows about what the husband does and that's why she said thank you to him to burn the sins of the husband
I love this movie, it’s such a great satire about food culture and the entire cast is terrific. I thought it was going to end up being a cannibalism movie.😂
It’s not a satire about food culture…
@Hey_Jamie totally, but at the same time, it is not not a satire of food culture...
I had to google just to make sure it wasn't that--found a site that answered it wasn't first and noped out before any other spoilers could be given. I hate cannibalism.
When I saw the poster, I thought it was a comedy drama film about a food critic and his girlfriend try to oust a world class Chef for being a fraud. Then I learned it's a dark comedy horror film.
Dark horror comedy might be my favorite to react to.
You should write that script. Sounds interesting.
Fun Fact: The cheeseburger, unlike the other food in the movie which was inedible since it was prop food, was real. The cast ended up getting so hungry during this scene that John Leguizamo later ordered burgers and fries for the cast. And I couldn't blame him because watching that scene made me want a burger and fries SO BAD! Glad you got a kick out of it.
All the food was real
They just were cold and old at the time where they actually needed to eat it
there wasn't prop food
When we watched this movie, my boyfriend was not thrilled that he shares a first name with the Nicholas Hoult character 😂. Of course, unlike that Tyler, mine can actually cook and knows to wash leeks thoroughly before using them.
It only just now clicked for me that all the other customers are likely drunk (or at least buzzed) by the end of the movie. They served them a different wine for each course other than the pallet cleanser.
Just love that the ingredients for the final dish also said :
Customers, staff, restaurant.
Hilarious.
This movie is hilarious and 💯 FACTS!! As someone who has spent a decade and a half doing everything from serving to bartending to cooking, I can confirm that it may be an exaggeration but Elsa is doing/saying what we wish we could.
Some people can never be pleased and I have seen people who lie and make things up just to get free stuff from pushover corporations and management. They don’t care about getting their server in trouble or fired as long as they get a free dessert.
Absolutely love this movie! Great cast, incredible music, wonderful set design. Should've got some Oscar recognition in my opinion.
This movie feels very much like Midsummar, but far more easily digestible. No pun intended. But there are remarkable similarities.
One of the best final girls, I think.
Omg no way! Someone who actually DID go get a burger to eat with the movie! Haha
It was worth it.
Totally unrelated to the movie, but you seem like such a good person. Loving your videos and your style. All the best
Just a tip: He pronounces it like Rafe Fines (like paying your fines). The guy in Shakespeare in Love is his brother, by the way, if you want to react to that, it's very good.
Yes! I’d never thought about how to pronounce his name (or even the spelling) until a patron pointed it out. Thanks!
@@CasualNerdReactions Yeah, I found out accidentally. Ralph isn't one you expect to need a pronunciation guide to.
I really like that this movie didn't involve cannibalism. I feel like any horror movie or thriller that surrounds food always involves eating people.
I went to see this on a 'cheap' Wednesday (not a Taco Tuesday) , didn't know anything about it and really, really enjoyed it. When Margot claps and gives Slovik a few home truths...brilliant.
I love this movie. And if you pay attention, at the beginning you KNOW that Erin is a call girl. She says to Tyler something like "It's on your per diem". That's nothing a date/girlfriend would say. And it's corroborated when she does not take offense at the fact that she's not the "+1", and, more obviously later, with the "you are the client" line referring to if the cheff may or may not be mad at Tyler.
I just assumed when she made that comment she was referencing the price of the meal, but yea that makes sense.
Also, when Tyler snaps at her and says that he can say what he wants because he's "paying".
There is also the moment she asks him, very professionally, "Is it OK if I'm not into this food as much as you are?", because, as a professional, if her being into the food as much as him was part of the girlfriend experience he wanted, she would play pretend.
She told the cheff that she was good at her job and (used to) enjoy/ed seeing her clients happy.
But since Tyler didn't care if she liked the food or not, she was honest.
Ok... I just wanted to write this off right quick to avoid any confusions in case no one mentions it.
With the actor's personal helper, she came from a rich family, goes to a nice school where her shit was paid for. Didn't have to worry about student loans. And... makes more money than most of us would even know what to do with. But still CHOSE to steal from her boss like a common petty thief. That would be like saying if for example, Zendaya went to a Walmart or Target but decided to steal instead of just paying just like everyone else. Unlike her, Chef had to work his ass off to get where he is and rose up to his station. He didn't have any handouts or get his job from his family name alone. Sad part is that there are millions of people just like Felicity and the rest of them who take everything they had for granted and not appreciating what they have.
I thought The Menu was intriguing, amusing and delightfully twisted. I had no idea what I was about to watch, so nobody told me I would need a cheeseburger. As soon as the film ended, I had to order a very nice cheeseburger from my local, and discovered they not only make excellent pizza, but also burgers. I think I hadn't had a cheeseburger for years prior. 🙂
I really enjoyed your reaction.
You never really need it till the end of the movie, although this movie didn't give me an appetite for anything, to be honest.
I'd say it's a dark comedy and a horror movie.
Best film in years. Reminds me of The Cook the Thief his Wife and her Lover in a great way.
Just subscribed 💜💜 hi from Puerto Rico 😊
Welcome to the channel!
Ralph Fiennes is pronounced Rayf Fines
11:48 As a Jeremy who works in a restaurant, I now make THE MESS for my birthday every year now 😂
You getting a Mcdonalds is even better considering the film
💯
I haven't had a burger in years (dietary issue, bleh) but I never wanted one more than after seeing this movie for the first time.
It’s a real problem.
Tyler’s [CENSORED] lives rent free in my head
2022 was a great year for horror movies, from Fresh and Barbarian (which are also date night horror movies like The Menu) to the more artsy Men and Crimes of the Future. I love Anya Taylor-Joy! She's fantastic here as a different kind of final girl - one that used a cheeseburger to get away from the killer. Maybe a month of ATJ films in the future, hmm?
I find it comforting to see that McDonald's cheeseburgers look just as pitiful as the ones served at our local McDonald's.
There are a few ATJ films i haven’t seen, so maybe! I hadn’t had a McDonald’s burger in so long, it was better than I expected, but also like twice as much as I expected 😅
@@Craig121000 What's wrong with being a sex worker? Certainly better than being a judgemental douchecanoe
1250$ is a little bit too high for me -but I'm going to a 400$ dinner next week and I really hope that I wont cry or die....
I'm rooting for you!
I would possibly put this in the Dark Comedy realm, although more dark stuff than comedic moments.
I had a cheeseburger yesterday at a restaurant (like a “please wait to be seated” thing), and wow, it was delicious.
I agree, this fits a dark comedy or even horror comedy for me. A little light on one side or the other depending on which way you go.
awesome! you reacted to this. the movie really did make me hungry and it was a coincidence that before I watched it, I went to my very first fine dining experience with my mom.
So 'smores would have been a better suggestion than a cheeseburger? Cheeseburger almost seems like a spoiler, and I'm not sure it would be good for watching the movie until the very end, so the logistics of it are questionable. Very cute, though.
i've seen the movie, I haven't even started watching your reaction yet but that cheap McDonalds burger is so perfect and what you said so ironic i love it. whether you did it on purpose or by accident bravo
I loved this movie, and I love your reactions. You are a very bright fellow.
Holt can apparently cry on demand! Holy smokes!
(From what I’ve seen from the movie.)
I love this movie. a fav from last year
Your reaction was wonderful!
Have you seen "The Queen's Gambit" and "Emma."?
I’ve seen both, although I don’t have any memories of Emma. I think I enjoyed it and found it pretty funny. Loved the queens gambit.
Great satire film. Fiennes and ATJ are great
26:16 Yes like a McGriddle from McDonald's. But also like a McGriddle, it's a garbage food. And now these garbage people get to represent garbage food.
yoo whats-his-face from warm bodies is in this
Indeed! I went with a couple friends to see warm bodies. There were a couple other groups in the theater and we were the only ones consistently laughing.
Love this movie ❤🍔
Glad I watched it thru you because you make it much more entertaining. 😂 Love your comments. The movie seems abit slow & no plot twist really.
Haha glad you enjoyed the reaction. The first half could be a bit slow, but the music was so really captivating and there was just enough to make my mind wonder up until “the mess” which is what I would consider the only genuine twist in the film.
OMG Love this Movie❤❤❤
This kind of event would be prepaid. But if it weren't, and they tried to give me a bill for my own murder, I would refuse to pay it. I know this much.
Oh I had definitely assumed it would be prepaid and them brining out the check was the only part that made me raise my eyebrows. Definitely would refuse payment haha
@@CasualNerdReactions Yeah, even if they were that far gone they wouldn't try to escape, somebody should have said no. What would they do, shoot them? I'd prefer it, as anyone who's ever burnt themselves even slightly while cooking would, I think. Where's the money going to go? This opened up too many questions for what was essentially one of the final jokes, I guess. I'm sure no one else cares :)
This is a good movie
Mmm, burger king 🍔.
I've never liked the ending. Don't want to give it away, but just doubt that would happen in real life
I sure hope nothing in this movie would happen in real life. 😅
Something in the satirical dark comedy was unrealistic? Shocking.
Haven't seen it yet, so I will give you a thumbs up to your video and come back to it when I see it.
Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
It’s quite interesting, thanks for the like. Hope you enjoy it when you get there!
2:55 i dont think Erin lived, due to this here. They were so careful to tell us what happens with the meat they use if it's not prepared exactly right, so I was waiting for someone to eat expired meat all film. I think Erin's burger is made by death meat and that's why he let her go 😰
Interesting theory. Dark. I dont thing the meat being prepared would have been the same as the ground beef and I don’t think the chefs motivation was to kill. I believe she lived, but definitely intrigued by a darker possibility.
I like this interpretation, but there's a detail that makes me think Margo survived in the end. In Chef's Smores speech, he talked about a "purifying flame" which we see reflected in her eyes. My guess is that Chef spared Margo because she was the only "pure" one in the group.
I have my own alternate ending: Chef was wearing a fire repellant and survived the explosion. He lived and will come back for The Menu 2.
The chef wouldn't serve her meat gone wrong, simple as that.
The only thing I had that was laughably good, was when I had pizza made in Italy, I couldn't eat USA pizza for almost a year cause its such a difference
