  • Hi everybody,
    Welcome to this months edition of Lawrie Goes Loco. We're heading back to the 2 foot gauge Old Kiln Light Railway in the Museum of Rural life to drive one of the mainstays of their operational fleet.
    If you like what you've seen and want more information on the Old Kiln Light Railway - or you're interested in joining the society, have a look at their website:

    If you fancied saying thank you for the video to the OKLR and would like to help them restore Pamela, the link to the just giving page is below:

    A video featuring:
    Lawrie - Presenter. Glad to be asked back the OKLR
    Matt - Cameraman. Not entirely sure how Lawrie got him to film more trains.

    Seriously enjoying your driving of all things narrow gauge and industrial...an area oft neglected by train buffs who concentrate on BIG engines, fast engines and mainline trains...
    Many of the HUNSLET machines in Australia are also very, very "snug". Often requiring exit from the cab in order to change your mind.

    How about coming to Scarborough and having ago on Neptune, the oldest Diesel Hydraulic (steam outline) locomotive....? Or perhaps on Georgina, the North Bay Railway's youngest locomotive, which is a Bagnall Sipat design?

    Those hunslets are the lowest spec of the 1980's mod narrow gauge! The baguleys are bigger but still crude. The RAF Barclays ( the last narrow gauge loco s that the mod used) have every extra on the option list. Air operated sanding gear with built in sand dryers. Independent mounted cab. A vortex exhaust system so no heat leaves the system. Electronic operated 2 speed gear box. And that's just the start of the features! PS all five are currently at the bredgar and wormshill.

      I've seen a few places have very narrow pits or at least raised rails.
      Failing that you have to lift the thing!

    Drive mallard and flying scotsman in one vid

    • @lmm
      @lmm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mallard is very unlikely as its not in working order and is unlikely to return to steam. Flying Scotsman does at least work, but we'd have to get alot bigger as a channel first.

    I dare say the MoD managed to blow a few of them up being as they were on a firing range, because it is, well, the MoD. Being as they were originally MoD units I imagine they were ordered to be as idiot-proof as possible, though everyone knows that nothing is squaddie-proof...

    • @lmm
      @lmm  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to agree with you on the second point, I guess they weren't blown up (purposely) as they're both required to run the railway and expensive.
      I can imagine whatever these replaced could have met an explosive fate...

      @@lmm I truly am enjoying it. I look forward to more, I finished it yesterday! I wish we had more small stuff like you seem to enjoy here in the states. I did, at one point, volunteer with a 3 foot gauge railroad in New Jersey... oddly enough, they have an Irish narrow gauge steamer from the Cavan and Leitrim, the "Lady Edith". Such a beautiful engine, but it seems the boiler and firebox need serious work they can't handle, plus they're made of copper. Here in the states, licenses for big copper boiler work are minimal, if they exist at all. The inspector didn't even know where to begin. Seems they no longer are able to reach the contact at C&L to continue plans to ship it back over the lake, too. Now she just sits... if only I had lots of money...

    • @lmm
      @lmm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a real shame. I didn't realise that was the case for copper with you guys.
      All steam engines need a load of money unfortunately.
