  • After a smashing debut, rookie K-pop girl group New Jeans has been accused of not-so-subtle double meanings in their song 'Cookie'. In response, their label, Ador, issued a lengthy statement of defense. They maintain they're focused on presenting a clean image and claim the song's lyrics merely referred to baked goods and CDs. However, many fans just don't buy it.

My favorite contradiction in the statement is how they go from "it shows how much confidence we have in the musical direction the group is taking" to "the song is an honest display of how nervous we were to put our new creation out" lol

if the lyrics were different nobody would’ve thought about any “hidden meaning”. the word ‘cookie’ itself is not the issue, but the suggestive lyrics sprinkled throughout the song are.
“made a cookie come and take a lookie”, “I wanna see you taste it”, “only at my house”, etc. bitch what???
also the addition of the word “boy” completely negates their statement that this is “a song for fans”. do they think newjeans’ fans are only boys?
grown ass women wrote this song. did they not know who they were writing for? and Ador green lighted it? bruh 😭

These girls are 14 to 18 years old, not 32. They haven’t burned a cd in their lives and wouldn’t even know what the heck that meant. External CD burn drives aren’t even regularly available and definitely not to the point where a group of five Gen Z girls are invested enough to make an cookie and cd burning analogy as if we were in 2004.
ADOR thought they would stitch together all these thin excuses to make a thick shield, and anyone with an ounce of critical thinking can see right through it. In what other context would “looking at my cookie” be if it’s so innocently ubiquitous in Korean culture? It’s almost like I’m waiting for them to call me ethnocentric for being troubled by obviously sexually suggestive lyrics being performed by minors.

It’s sickening how the music industry sexualizes women and men! Once they sign the contract, they have no say in what they sing or how they perform. Pre-teens love the beat and then sing the words without realizing what they mean. Sad, depraved world that we live in.

People have been saying for decades, that the music industry specificly (worse than the general entertainment industry) is agenda driven and has a dark spiritual aspect to it. People who have been in the industry call it demonic even and they know. Music is one of the most abused tools, to get to us on a deep spiritual level.

Two of the members have songwriting credits on their debut album and Min Heejin said in an interview that the process with NewJeans is not like that with other groups: The members do have input and it's important that they are happy. So they do have a say in what they sing and how they perform. I choose to respect them and if they say they were singing about music then I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. If the lyrics make me uncomfortable maybe that's my problem

Lol, listen I don’t buy that statement only because RM( who or sort of fluent in English) is able to change the Korean word of ‘neega’ when performing fake love for the first time at the billboard awards. As he knew how that word could be perceived to an English audience. Then there is no excuse for not understanding the singular word of ‘ cookie’ and the other words that surround the word cookie that creates the sexual innuendo. I also read some Korean comments defending this song and saying Americans are always only dirty minded and this is only an American perspective of the word cookie. But that is not correct I come from South Africa where we have 11 official languages and most people in South Africa who has a basic level and of English would understand the word cookie in the song context. Basically anywhere in the world where English is not their first language would understand the word cookie. It amazes me how not one fluent English- Korean speaker at that company gave their feedback on the song before it was released. You know what I think there was a translator and told the label about the word cookie but they didn’t listen to them because they could use it for out rage marketing just like another kpop girl group from that purposely released a bad song for that same reason.

I don't think every English speaker may think it is inappropriate, but the English speaking songwriters and translator definitely know the innuendos.

Why is this even up for debatte for some people? These are the most obvious naughty references ever. Its not like "Hotel California" form the Eagles, with dozens of different theories about what it could mean. You cant even call it subliminal, its just right out of the gate. I dont know what age group this song is targeted at, cause I dont pay any attention to K-Pop, but only kids these days would not see anything wrong with that. Everyone else knows whats up or is SUPER naive.
Another sin here is, that you never took a bite of the tasty looking cookie you were showing us the whole time. Like these damn people in movies, who order a bunch of food, let it sit in front of them, never touch it, and then leave the scene.🤤

      1. All time favorite: they are singing about a satanic cult (around Anton Szandor LaVey) that gathered in the hotel to perfom weird rituals with one unsuspecting traveller in between.
      2. They are singing about the Chateau Marmont, that always hosted/still hosts alot of wild celebrity parties (kinda ties into theory 1)
      3. Its just about a tired traveller, who happens to rest at a hotel full on junkies.
4.They just made a song about decadence and the downfall of the "american way of life" in the 70s.

I keep thinking about how Steve Harvey uses "cookie"😳, (his dating advice to mature women, to avoid giving up your "cookie" for 90 days). I have not checked New Jeans out, yet, however by chance, I happened across a YT short where TXT members were checking them out, and were surprised to find out that NJ's maknae is only 14, (I think 5 years younger than their maknae). Speaking of Kookie😜 Jungkook was older when he debuted and seemed too young at times, like I dunno... She's not my kid, but I can't imagine. And, no matter what their intent was, by the lyrics, there are going to be certain kinds of people (if you know what I mean) that could be drooling over these underage girls as it is. Did that "novel" length statement come from the group, or the company? If it's from the company, it seems to imply that they are more concerned with publicity (even from controversy?), and making money than protecting their trainees (this has come up recently as Trainee A's Leo quit). Just what it made me think of as I listened to your breakdown.

It's super tone death and I see them going through this again in the future.
And not to go too off topic but considering the Garam bullying scandal and HYBE's lying and backtracking there is no doubt in my mind that Ador didn't know what they were doing and are just flat out lying. It's too occlusive (opaque?). I like the Chanel Aqua Lumiere tinted suncreen as my foundation. It's very light coverage and makes my skin look natural and like I am not wearing foundation. "Cookie" is slang in the U.S. and is code for a female private part. American comedian Steve Harvey literally did a show telling women how men feel about it as women think they can use the "cookie" to keep a man. If HYBE /ADORE want to venture into the global market, they are going to have to change their approach, especially for the USA, where sexualizing minors is a constant issue and ADORE will be viewed as ones who are contributing to the problem; regardless of their intentions.

I don’t follow these girls as they are pretty new so I haven’t heard the song yet but if it was written in the US the lyrics are exactly meant to be what you are thinking, especially if they were written by people in the LA music industry! The filth that comes out of that particular industry has gone downhill tremendously since Rap music came out. looking at their face, they all like teenager but selling their cookies? really? how much for a weekend? hhahaa
and holly crap they dont have an ID, cant drink alcohol and no smoking, but selling their cookies? wow
i studied on IT, using PC since windows XP, worked as admin, data entry, troubleshooter and maintenance, sometimes freelance for building networking for home and office, also wedding video editor, not even once in my years working with computer and CD/DVD that i ever heard someone said do you see my windows 7 cookie? or do you see my PC driver cookie? or do you buy that new games cookie?
but if my girl friends asking or teasing do you want to see my cookie and "baking" my cookie at my place??? oh we absolutely know that we should buy condoms and bring the wine hahahah nobody bring their CD ROM or CD PLAYER with such invitation hahaha
thats how we put it on the CONTEXT.
many researchers and linguistic studies says that human communicates only 20% with language, 80% is came from gestures, mimics, body language.
so, what do they communicate to the audience by saying cookie, posing some unconventional gesture that we never seen it at the kitchen???
i would believe that they are honest, if the videos is in the kitchen baking cookies, wearing apron, with face full of flour and chocolate, and dirty hands, or the video about they practicing singing, recording, meeting to draw the concepts and design for their CD covers or something similar like that.
but its not. the gesture is about red light district on amsterdam or patpong in thailand or jalan jaksa in indonesia, come on mister taste some cookies.

I wonder how often cookies are used as grades in countries that use English as their national language. (Korea uses clams in a similar meaning)
I am not a conservative person.
If NewJeans came out with song cookies as their creation, "It's fun. I would have thought, "Kids these days are fast."
However, the Kpop group gathers talented units and makes them sing.
If the production team made the lyrics intentionally, an adult made a minor sing such a song.
In this sense, I think the interpretation of cookies is seriously important.
Personally, I really like the song Cookie.

I have a feeling hybe knows exactly what they can get away with in korea. and whether they are right or wrong, i would also bet that they expect international audiences will get over it.

They need to have a staff member who has listened to popular music. I am an older woman who just learned that watermelon sugar isn’t about watermelon (to be fair, i haven’t heard the whole song). I even thought of the cookie as anatomy and I only get about half of adult references. I was willing to go with the idea that Korean girls don’t know the term, so maybe it isn’t deleterious, but the problem is that men understand. If she can’t actually apologize or stop promoting that content, she shouldn’t have tried.

@@jaybass3522 Of course not. They’re responsible for creating a good concept. Innocent is different from Lolita. Why is it that this type of "suggestive" lyric is only problematic when it's a new girl group from HYBE? This has been going on since the beginning of K-POP girl groups. Song's like "Ice Cream" are celebrated, why I have no idea. But now that it's HYBE it's one step too far. The dances the girl groups participate in have always been sexualize, why doesn't anyone object to that? Truth is all of these groups are selling sex and based on the way they are choreographed, staged and dressed, most are being portrayed in a cutsie yet Lolita-like manner. So if folks are so outraged over "Cookie" they need to stop stanning other groups that use the same method to sell their songs and use the energy that they are directing toward HYBE to also call out the other top agencies who regularly put out the same product.

    • @lincohorn7750

@@HeavenlyiceDream BP isn't the only girl group. The problem is pervasive in K-POP. Most grown women are expected to act like sexy little girls and young girls who debut in their teens are trained to act older. But God help them if they date because, of course, no matter how sexy they are expected to act on stage the marketing is to be a sexy little virgin. It's not just a female marketing tactic, the same goes for many male groups as well. Thing is I never hear objections to the dancing or costuming which can be blatant but we're going to clutch our pearls over how WE are interpreting a song.

My objection to the “controversy” is that it is predicated on viewers seeing teenage girls through the eyes of adults. Do adults sexualize teenage girls? Yes, and to hold the girls accountable for adults’ discomfort is unfair. So many reactors have expressed their discomfort, and if it were my daughter who worked so hard for her debut and gave such an excellent performance I would be outraged that adults were posting online their creepy opinions on her clothes and lyrics. Let the members speak for themselves, or at least let their label speak for them. Give them the power to tell you how they want to be viewed, please. If they tell us they were singing about burning CDs and inviting people to “taste” their music then please give them the respect they deserve and the benefit of the doubt. And stop endlessly talking about it, everyone! You’re not helping!
