Helena, who would be 110 now , used to say “it’s kind of like a figure eight “- she was starting to teach the intermediate area of bowing. The bow is straight, so I couldn’t understand what she meant but that didn’t stop her. Also with regard to the raising of the wrist and the use of the fingers when doing a whole bow , as you explain in your smooth bow changes video : “You see, all these little finger joints need to start to get involved,” she would say, sweetly. After 40 years I begin to understand. Now that you explain it , better than Helena, but just as sweetly. Thank you again , Joy Lee 😀
This is the first figure 8 bowing lesson I've run across that made sense to me. You gave the details I needed to hear with a great demonstration. Thank you!
I really recommend this channel for every violin player (beginner up to advanced). I've played violin for ten years and I can certificate all the content is what I've learned with my professional teacher and even more. Great project! 😉
If I ever find how to make time to focus on violin, I'm coming to this channel. ❤🎶 For now I'm watching and hoping to keep the info retained in the back of my mind. 😅
Time is an elusive beast, but to probably misquote Thoreau: "all the time we have is all the time there is". Maybe you have time for just one arpeggio per day? 30 seconds is better than nothing!
Thank you. Doing this stopped my unintended bouncing bow. Why are we taught to stay parallel to develop hard to change stiff and ridged technique at first? I heard a teacher say once that it was his job to put himself out of a job and that's what he would be doing and that was a very good thing. I don't know if he was being sarcastic or not, but why do we always hear to keep it parallel at first?
Thanks Shiloh. So glad to hear this was helpful to you :) Many instructions for beginner violinists are much simplified so that the students don't feel overwhelmed. But soon later all violinist should be exposed to the necessity and importance of flexible bowing with flexible bow grip and flexible LH hold. Happy violin playing!
@@JoyLeeViolin I can't vibrato because I can't hold the violin without pinching the neck with my left thumb and first finger. It becomes impossible for me on the G string but I realize in higher positions, the vibrato mainly comes from pushing down perpendicular to the fingerboard instead of up and down the neck as the general motion suggests in lower positions. I've played violin for over a decade and I still can't do it. Thanks for your instruction. You're the best!

I would like you to teach Bach Concerto In A Minor 1st Movement. The bowing and syncing are really tricky and shifting. I would really appreciate it Joy! Thanks!
Dear Alex, here is a video about the Bach Concerto a minor. I hope this would be helpful. Happy violin playing! th-cam.com/video/uzi-2ii-upM/w-d-xo.html
Thank you so much for this explanation! As a violist, there aren't many options out there, but I've still found your videos very helpful! Also, I'm not sure if you already have a video on it, but would you have tips for developing a warmer, more controlled vibrato? Thank you so much!
Hi Emmanuel, regarding having better control over semi tone has to do with having flexible LH frame which will allow LH to move and adjust as needed. Here are some videos which might be helpful with the LH technique. Yes you can! As long as you keep a consistent contact point. But it will always depend on the piece your playing and what sound you're going for. Always experiment and try to find the best way that works for you. 😊
Yes you can Jub8891! Depending on the tempo and types of strings changes, the degrees of the right elbow can change, but in general you can use this in most of the repertoires. Happy violin playing!
The right elbow should be a bit forward at down bow , not reverse, because it will help the bow to keep on the correct angle in upper half bow. ( Otherwise the sound will suffer). I hope you can try it yourself. Happy violin playing!

A suggestion for a video: Wich exercises could be helpful to improve the rhythm? The rhythm is my main difficulty.

Thank you Joy. If this motion can be used for fast and slow, does that mean it can be used all the time?
I have the same question

@@JoyLeeViolin thank you Joy and Uriel, i will give it a try!
My old violin teacher told me that when I do string crossings, I should move my wrist like I’m making stir fry 😅
I do the figure 8 bowing but I do it the other way around. Is that wrong?
The right elbow should be a bit forward at down bow , not reverse, because it will help the bow to keep on the correct angle in upper half bow. ( Otherwise the sound will suffer). I hope you can try it yourself. Happy violin playing!
