Why didn't Poland hand over Danzig to Germany? (Short Animated Documentary)

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 ธ.ค. 2024
- Germany demanded numerous territorial concessions from basically everyone in the lead up to World War 2. Everyone gave them exactly what they wanted until Poland who said no to the return of Danzig and some territory called the 'Polish Corridor'. So given that everyone had caved in to Germany's demands up until this point, why was that Poland was the first to refuse?

I swear this has to have something to do with Napoleon
I mean, a lot of history is because of Alexander, Cæsar, or Napoleon

The 'ultimatum' Germany came up with wasn't even presented to the Polish ambassador. It was read out loud to the British ambassador, who also wasn't allowed to see the document it was printed on. So yeah it was basically just an excuse to justify their invasion which was already inevitable at this point.
lmao the ultimatum also practically said "be our puppet"
and then the false flag attack before the invasion itself
I watched the first 30 seconds as well
it's really funny that Germany went to the British Ambassador when dealing with Poland, Russia does the same thing with Ukraine right now. They keep asking the USA about things when we aren't the boss of Ukraine.

To be fair, UK and France knew exacly that Germany was doing. They just couldn't be bother to upheld any of their promises
@anne.andromeda Then why they make promises in the first place
@anne.andromeda it wasn’t that.
Britain and France were trying to buy time. Because both nations were rearming, and ramping it up. At a sustainable rate that would see them outstrip Germany in a few years. But they needed time.
@@Th3Jac0b They needed time to gear up for war. Check out how many spitfires were built in 1939 to see the longer Britain could prolong 'the peace' the more military equipment they could build. Also don't forget each nation has their own interests at heart.

France and Britain: "we will defend Poland to the last man if they're invaded!"

2:52 Suwalki was actually in the german sphere.
Maybe it was a display of the older Molotov pact, where Suwałki was in the Soviet sphere.
Later the Germans negotiated and got that in return for the Soviets getting the entire nation of Lithuania.
@ It is not, and even if it was, suwalki was always in the German sphere, in the original partition even Lithuania was to be German
@fr0nted No it wasn’t??? The Germans traded Lithuania for Suwalki to have a slightly better border with the USSR, i assume.
@Markyboyplaysgames You're in over your head here. Look it up. The original borders was that Lithuania along with Suwalki and Vilnius was to be under the German sphere and a much bigger part of Poland to be in the Soviet sphere. The germans traded Lithuania for a bigger part of Poland because they managed to go much deeper into the country during their invasion than they had first anticipated. Suwalki was always going to fall under the Germans.
@fr0ntend
You’re wrong, it was going to be in Soviet sphere.
Source: I just looked it up.
Even wikipedia cites it in an image file in the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact page.

It was all going to plan, the germans where starting to run out of steam, The Polish Reserves were finally reaching their units, The Poles where finally ready to dig in and wait for either the french to attack or the situation to develop where they could counter attack.
And then the USSR showed up from the east.
And then the French sat, doing nothing.
What plan assumed that after 5 days, the central government would evacuate and the capital city would be under siege 2 weeks into the war?

0:21 Burst out laughing, History Matters never disappoints.
Poland: “No Germany we’re not giving that over… why do I hear Russian boss music?”
Why did James Bissonet stay neutral in ww2?
$$$
This is why in HOI4 the foci "Danzig for guarantees" and "Danzig for Slovakia" are so dumb, the polish would have never accepted to cede the corridor to Germany, and even less Poznan, the birthplace of the nation
"Poland never actually controlled Danzig"
In the interwar period, since Poland regained independence in 1918. till 1945
danzig/Gdansk was under Polish controll for hundred of years 960-1330 to 1460s-1793, in either way double triple longer than Germany ever controll.
Additionally, Gdansk was controlled for further 500~ years by other Slavic Tribes before Poland gained its controll there in 960s/ (Last Germanic tribes left Poland between 412-420s)
ehm the goths and other german tribes lived ther for centurys before the slavs even came to central europe
@@baronbrummbar8691 Then it was good for the Poles that they left.
He meant that Poland never _de jure_ controlled the Free State of Danzig, not that it never controlled the city in any historical time period.
If it was always so polish, why did the poles have to ethically cleanse 96% of the native population in 1945?
@@januarysson5633 they didn´t leave entirely

Betrayed by the Soviets? Hah! As if the USSR was Poland’s friend to begin with!
A long video for the easy answer James Bisonette
James Bisonette didnt make a high enough bid
Thank you for reminding us of the history we are in the process of repeating.
Big up JAMES BISSONETTE!
If I had a nickel for everytime Poland saved Europe from an existential threat but was then betrayed and annexed by their allies I was would have two nickels. Which isn't alot but its surprising its happened more then once.
Neither Germany or the USSR were allies of Poland. Sure, Poland was betrayed but it was not annexed by their allies.
Also, if your saying post 1941, even then USSR and Poland never were allies.
Stalin post war proceeded to make his own government because the Polish gov in exile refused to give him eastern Poland.
2,5 as Poland also stopped mongol hordes (lost most of battles but inflicted enough dmg that they had to go back to ruzzia and never returned), but at least it wasnt betrayed after
@Markyboyplaysgames True I probably should've worded it better. Mostly the point is Poland saving Europe but still getting fucked over by their neighbors.
There goes one more video for tonight
As he has previously stated before “it always starts with Napoleon.”
I have a feeling this is something to do with Napoleon.
James Bisonette had something to do with it
Because jame bisonette paid Poland not to hand over Danzig
Need to stop everything I’m doing when History Matters uploads
Because Kelly moneymaker is polish and he asked them not to
I think the intro answers the question pretty well on its own. Germany demanded land from Czechoslovakia then invaded despite being given the territory it asked for.
It would be obvious to the Polish that giving Germany Danzig wasn't going to solve anything, just make it easier for Germany to invade the rest of Poland.
It's almost like giving someone what they want under the threart of violence only encourages them to keep using violence to get what they want...
The Poles had heard of lebensraum at that point it seems.
I Loved this topic ! Another great idea for a video is :”Why did the British 🇬🇧 and French 🇫🇷 fight over Saint Lucia 🇱🇨 so much ? “
Yay new video
James Bissonnette negociated so hard for them.
The British war guarantee to Poland was the most stupid guarantee a British government has ever given, a guarantee it could not honour, had no plans to honour and did not honour.
i mean it did declare war on Germany
imagine if Poland got the C-S treatment and the world just ignores it
And then they proceeded to abandon Poland. By the end of the war, Poland was lost. So what was the war for? To protect Poland, which was left alone to die?
Ironic, and only the USSR benefited.
So much so for protecting Poland.
@@baronbrummbar8691 if the British war guarantee wasn’t issued I think Poland would have reassessed its options
@@rossmackenzie7158 considering that poland invaded both germany and the USSR in the 20s
i doubt that
@Markyboyplaysgames The UK declared war as promised, the UK continued to fight the Germans for 5 years despite the fall of France.
By 1945 the Red Army was the largest land army in the world, the US had no plans to go to another war and one that would cost them far more lives than with Germany.
What could the UK do? Nothing, by 1945 they were a shadow of their pre-war selves, France was destroyed and they were not going to go to another war either, Churchill had plans for an invasion of the USSR in 1945 using captured German and Italian troops, guess who didn't agree?
R.I.P Kelly Moneymaker
🫗 🎻 🎶 Kelly, we hardly knew ye.... 😭
Always have a backup plan
Funnily, there was the idea in the Polish government of turning Danzig into a Polish-German condominium. Germans obviously said no
I also want to say that maybe because of Berlin's stupidity we indeed suffered too much, but Germans were also completely unnecessarily hit. And what was all this for? We had genocides and ethnic deportation. Poland stands strong and thrives thanks to Gdańsk, Gdańsk is rich thanks to Poland. But was there really no other way? Why couldn't we live in peace? How great both our countries would have been if we all were friends and not enemies
0:21 thanks TH-cam for making Him this
"YOU KNOW WHAT GOES HERE" Fair enough, HM. Fair enough.
I hope you don’t mind but I’ve got some video suggestions for you on questions I’ve got that aren’t really answered well:
- Did other civilizations like China or India experience a “dark age” like in Western Europe after the fall of the western Roman Empire?
- Why didn’t the barbarian invaders that conquered the western Roman Empire adopt Roman technology? Why was so much technology lost for so long?
- Where did the Huns come from? And what happened to them?
- What happened to the “Roman” peoples living in what was once the western Roman Empire? How did life change for them?
- Why did China expand west?
- Why didn’t Rome conquer Germania?
- Who were the Goths? Where did they come from? What happened to them?
- Why didn’t the Mongols conquer Europe?
- 10 minute history video on the 7 years war?
- Did North American native Americans know about the Aztec’s? Or other mesoamerican civilizations?
- When and how did sirens go from human faced birds to mermaids?
"Did other civilizations like China or India experience a “dark age” like in Western Europe after the fall of the western Roman Empire?"
Europe never really experienced a dark age. It's no longer a historiographical term. It's just the Early Medieval Period.
"Why didn’t the barbarian invaders that conquered the western Roman Empire adopt Roman technology? Why was so much technology lost for so long?"
In many cases they did. They even adopted Roman law in many ways.
"Where did the Huns come from? And what happened to them?"
Nobody knows. It was hypothesized that the Huns were the same people that the Han called the Xiongnu, but that hypothesis has fallen out of favor. As for where they went, they were probably assimilated by the tribal people's of Europe during their migrations.
" What happened to the “Roman” peoples living in what was once the western Roman Empire? How did life change for them?"
Life didn't really change all that much, only they had new rulers and payed less taxes. Their cities also shrank, but this happened over centuries.
"Why did China expand west?"
To pacify it. The western protectorate's formal name was The Protectorate General to Pacify the West. A lot of raiders came from the west, so occupying it was a good way to stop raids.
"Why didn’t Rome conquer Germania?"
The land wasn't well developed with lots of marshland. Gallia, while still tribal, had a more extensive roadway networks and the Gallic tribes were generally more 'civilized' for lack of a better term.
"Who were the Goths? Where did they come from? What happened to them?"
They were an East Germanic people who originated in Scandinavia. They assimilated to the Latin cultures in the south, though one group managed to retain their culture in Ukraine until the 19th century.
"Why didn’t the Mongols conquer Europe?"
Their Khan died, castles, and Europeans learned how to fight against Mongol tactics.
"Did North American native Americans know about the Aztec’s? Or other mesoamerican civilizations?"
Some probably did, some probably didn't. Given most of these places lacked a written language it's hard to tell what they knew except for their oral traditions.
It's because Danzig is too busy living in the house he bought from Carl, and is trying to get the cybernetic ghost of Christmas past (from the future) to make the elfin blood run from the walls for all eternity.

I didn't even know there was an ask. I assumed once they had the USSR on side they just kind of assumed nobody would go to war over Poland, which they were caught off guard when they did resulting in the phoney war.
It's because Poland was in historical mode
Is it just me or had the fps slightly dropped?
Your patreon shout out is getting to be longer than your actual video
Because Poland assumed the Allies weren't idiots
they were proven quite wrong
Why did the allies do nothing during the invasion of Poland.
It's known that the Siegfried Line was very bad garrisoned during the early stages of WW2 and a grand allied offensive would probably put more pressure on the large portion of the german army which was invading Poland.
Maybe they weren't big heavy metal fans ?
yoo an upload
1:19 "Poland never own Danzig", Dude, do you mean II Republic of Poland? Because Polish Kingdom ruled the city for the centuries, especially on its peak era, while Polish king let settle huge number of Dutch, Frisian, Flemish, and even some German refugees. That's why Danzig looks much more Dutch than German.
"You know what goes here" 🤣
A time many things were promised but nothing was held.
With regard to the return of the Saarland:
It was in the Treaty Of Versailles that in 1934 that the Saarland be allowed to have a referendum to determine its future and the choices were:
1. Remain an internationally run plebiscite
2 Become part of France
3. Go back to Germany.
The people living there overwhelmingly chose option 3,so while Germany did regain the Saarland,it was because the people living there chose to be part of Germany
and the austrians also wanted to join germany
Yeah, but a lot of people actually feared the return to a country under a national-socialist government. In fact, the Nazis used dirty tactics, like intimidation and threats, to make sure the land would rejoin Germany.
Well, the comment I made was deleted, but I wanted to add the many people feared the return to Germany by the austrian guy. In fact, the N4zis used dirty tactics to make sure they got the results they wanted, like intimidation and threats.
@@baronbrummbar8691The people living there,yes.
As for the Fascist government at the time, I'll quote from another History Matters video:
"They wanted to be part of Germany, just not THAT Germany."
You see, Austria's Fascist government weren't exactly fans of Hitler and the Nazis, they were so against the Nazis they allowed opposition parties on the condition that they were against the Nazis.

We can scoff at Polish strategic planning, but after Germany's full-scale invasion, she had pretty much blown her wad - Germany had only 6 weeks of munitions and no manpower reserve after the fight was over. If it wasn't for a certain dictator (Or if perhaps the allies made a more resolute attack in 1939 from the west), Germany could not have surmounted the british blockade.
