Thank you for your efforts in making this video, much appreciated. I have a background in Plumbing and HVACR work with a very little experience with SketchUp. I'm also a Home shop/Hobbyist Machinist. It's the Hobbyist Machinist aspect that has brought me to LibreCAD, as I want to design some of my own parts. There will be a fairly steep learning curve, but that's nothing new, I've learned enough of the Linux command line to make me very dangerous, ha! So looking forward to something new. As a Home shop/Hobbyist Machinist, I'm aware of some aspects of bolt specifications that you didn't cover, I'm thinking that you are also aware of those, but chose not to extend your video with extra minutia. Again thank you very much, I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Great video, some steps were a bit quick and paused and rewinded a couple dozen times and glad you had a high screen resolution so that I could see the items you were selecting and was good following along in Theater Mode. Coming from SketchUp and trying LibreCAD is certainly good exercise for the brain.
Jumping back and forth between SketchUP and LibreCAD is challenging because the user interface and purpose for the programs is so different. I use both of these programs. I have used SketchUP a lot recently (to design my new workbench) but still need to use LibreCAD from time to time for very accurate, 2D scale printouts (which I use as templates). I will probably challenge myself further by learning Blender (so I can create 3D animations of mechanical designs).
Great job. This is the first time I have heard someone use the factoid/standard of length of thread for various bolt sizes. I've been using CAD since AutoCAD Ver 1 for DOS. I am experimenting with several CAD Softwares including LibreCAD. I use circles and rectangles for short cuts to drawing single lines. I am currently (in my regular job) using Inventor Pro 14. I'd like to learn how to use CAD with no prior experience in drafting or engineering. I found this miles over my head. If anyone has a reference for LibreCAD for Slow Dummies, I'd appreciate it.
As long as you have the same software version, you should have no major problems. Just try to follow along step by step. Pause the video after each instruction and try to repeat it exactly. It will probably take you a few hours to complete because you will make mistakes from time to time and you will need to rewind the video to see where you went wrong. Just remember to save your work after each correct step.
God I cam here looking to see if LibreCad may be compatible to do some section elevations for my extension....Now 20 minutes later I just want to draw a bolt...lol..I am so easily distracted....good video.
PETER; Excellent tutorial! When trying HATCH; I form a box, [w/rectangle], selct, choose Hatch ; works PERFECT! - I REPEAT exactly; ERR: "not a closed area...". Can you give hints, WHAT TO DO?
Hatching in LibreCAD is a bit funky. I'm having a few issues with it as well. I either work with duplicate geometry or use Undo a lot to get the hatch right. Good luck!
This is a great tutorial... you make it look so easy! I have just started using LibreCAD to create drilling templates for my projects and I am able to get good results if I map everything out on paper and use the command line to place rectangles, circles, etc. Could please you tell me: How long did it take you to become this proficient? Also, how similar is this to other CAD programs? Did you already know CAD and that made it easy to learn LibreCAD? Thanks!
Thanks! I used AutoCAD for years at work almost everyday from simple sketches to full drawings. So it didn't take me that long to learn LibreCAD but it has taken me a while to learn how to use it proficiently. I find LibreCAD is similar to older versions of CAD, but it's still a very powerful tool.
Very well explained. I like it very much but the problem I am having is when I put the values in the command line for lines ect. they are not drawn the correct size. I am sure my Drawing preferences are not correct but I do have the units set to Inch & the Length to decimal & Angle to Decimal Degrees. Can you advise as to what your settings were on this Bolt drawing? Thank you. Dave
@@markrand652 Mark, Actually, No. What I have been doing is either, make the inch to mm conversion, & enter it as mm or, just make the entity long or shorter than needed & then use the trim or extend tool. Using the conversion method makes the drawing more to scale. Dave

This is a great tutorial. My version seems to have bugs though. I can't set the pitch. I have to dock the widgets (command line and layer list) every time I load the program. Is there a patch out there to overcome this?
These sound like fairly clear instructions but no way is this for a raw beginner. Are there any of your videos for beginners who have never seen CAD in operation and certainly never drawn with mouse and screen?
I have a question. When I draw with LibreCAD, and when I print the size is different slightly, is there a way that I can adjust for the size difference? I thought I export to pdf and gto printing store and use their printers, but on the pdf lines are almost invisible. Do you know how to fix this?
I have 2.1.3 version. When I try to draw a polygon like yours in the video. I draw a triangle. Why is that? I am very new to LibreCAD and I want to learn how to use it. Is there something in the drawing preferences that needs to be changed? I do not know where to look.

Yeah, a nightmare. To draw something even simple, one needs to click and type dozens of times. Unintuitive, has buggy UI, awkward UX, but completely FREEEEE:)
Hi! When you click on polygon, a "Number" field opens up in the top toolbar area. Change the number from 3 to 6 and you will get a hexagon instead of a triangle.
With Polygon (Cen, Cor) selected, I snapped to the origin and type @1.732/2 on the command line. A triangle resulted vice a hexagon. What am I doing wrong?
You have to put the right number of faces. In this example, type 6 in the Number bar, near the top of the screen. I had the same problem as you. Took me a while to realize haha :P
A nice and Quick tutorial for doing basic functions. Though, the imaginary CAD teacher hovering over my shoulder would like to point out that you forgot to dimension the bolt's shaft. :)
LibreCAD is a phenomenally awkward program, it takes hours if not days to draw somewhat complex stuff, and there's no design dependency, all the lines are independent after they're drawn. The UI/UX is also extremely awkward. But the video is great.

Might be good for people who already know CAD or the software, but the presentation is not well done. Demonstrates that the presenter may know what he is doing, but neglects basic info needed to follow this tutorial. For instance, how to add a layer, the reason for the choices being made, use of the command line, etc. Why 30 degrees of such an such, why a 3 deg. arc. As a newbie to CAD and to LibreCAD this was a complete waste of time.
That is why the title says, "LibreCAD Tutorial: Drawing a Bolt" and not Beginner tutorial introduction to LibreCAD I would guess right? As someone with just a lazy month of LibreCAD experience this was very useful. This presentation on drawing something practicle is one of the better ones that are out there on youtube IMO. Anytime I select vertical after drawing the polygon and circle,the length and snap point doesn't come up again . Please help

On the top-bar, look for dialog where you can SET the # of sides.

He has the mid-point snap turned on so his new line automatically snaps to the mid-point of that vertical line.
