I am so happy to see an actor like Sandra Oh doing so well. 20 years ago my wife and I saw her in Double Happiness about a Chinese-Canadian woman in a tug of war with her strict controlling father and passive mother. Her performance in that is fantastic making us hope that she would get noticed and given more work. She never disappoints, so smart and funny too.
I loved that movie, too! I fell in love with her then, and was amazed when she showed up in Grey’s Anatomy
@@callmeneutrino7136 I first noticed her in "Last Night", in which she was part of a terrific ensemble cast of how all different people in a Canadian city were facing the end of the world. There aren't a lot of movies I watch repeatedly and care to own on DVD. That one made the list.

Sandra Oh has an infectious energy. A lot of late night guests, you feel like the host needs to steer the conversation and prompt them to open up, stay on topic, elaborate on earlier points... Sandra Oh is natural and open and has great repartee-- I imagine she must be fantastic onstage.
Straight out of National Theatre School, Ms. Oh starred in Runaway, the Evelyn Lau story. Brilliant. Greetings from Montréal. She is a national treasure, but we will share her with the world.

@@heatherst-amour6250 the story doesn't seem plausible to me, though. It's not like he was placing commercial signs in shop windows. He was putting up posters for a fringe show on lamp posts. Maybe that wasn't allowed in the area where he was, or maybe they needed a stamp of approval from the organizers or something. I have a great deal of sympathy for the Québec language laws, though their rationale can be difficult to explain to outsiders and they are sometimes comical in their ham-handed enforcement. I live in NDG and there are lots of English only signs up announcing local events on posts etc. C'est n'est pas un big deal.
@@heatherst-amour6250 A friend of mine was harassed by the OLF for their website, which was personal site (not the employer's) but discussed their work. It was so stupid.

"Eh" reminds me a bit of "alors" as we French say it. It has layers of meanings. I was intrigued the first time I heard it.

David Steinberg (from Winnipeg) was asked by his daughter (raised in L.A.) about the difference between Canadians and Americans. He showed her on an elevator in Toronto. For no reason, he said "sorry.". All the other people on the elevator fidgeted a bit and each said "sorry" in return.
I have found myself reflexively saying sorry to furniture that I've bumped into. Or, (in Québec) "désolé" or "excusez".
Story must be fake , it will never happen in Toronto ! lol

@@scotthong2008 Mr Thong, you may not have been given a "hello" in Toronto, that might be true. It's a huge city, and in huge cities, people rarely say hello to random strangers, even if they have whimsical surnames like "Thong." Nevertheless, being Canadian, they will certainly say "sorry." Like, I am sorry that I snickered at your funny surname, for instance.

My wife and I were out last evening ( her birthday) here in Canada, and a transit bus was heading back to the depot. The front destination sign said: “Sorry… not in service.”

4:00 and 2002 I road trip across the US to get to our graduate school with a Canadian classmate. I will never forget the look of complete shock on his face when I went up to the fountain drinks at Subway and refilled my cup. He didn’t know about refills and thought I was stealing it and thought it was completely scandalous! Granted he was like 22 years old soI was cracking up in his shock

I remember doing these speech exercises to alleviate stage fright before going on stage. It always worked, and kept my voice elevated and diction steady throughout.

In 1995 I was fortunate to be sent on a business trip to Montreal for a wk. Quebec was getting ready to vote on whether to remain part of Canada. Knowing that some French Canadians felt (feel?) some hostility towards English-speakers, I was concerned that I might get knocked down by someone for speaking English. My concern was misplaced and we had a wonderful time. When you're greeted in French and you reply in English, the locals switch to English and everything's cool. The only problem we encountered was an ill-tempered metro employee who surely was bilingual but gave us a hard time anyway.

I knew of Sandra Oh from Grey's anatomy as a teenage boy and that wasn't my type of show then and I never came across any other roles she did really. But a couple years ago I treated to the series Killing Eve and she was brilliant ❤

When Stephen mentions Canadians, what he means is english Canadians. There are two distinct cultures in Canada. English Canadians dont fall far from the British tree - uber polite and proper but it can at times covers up pent up anger and even nasty ness. (Not Sandra, she is of a special breed of deeply decent and super nice people, not an ounce of malice in her). French Canadians are a different breed, not falling far from the French tree - not so polite, not so humble, some at times even overtly arrogant, but if you scratch under the surface of most of them, you find lots of good heart and surprising warmth. The french police is a manifestation of their commitment to survive as a culture in the midst of the super powerful American culture and in a country where more than 70% of people are english Canadians. At the end of the day, all people with qualities, challenges, pretences and mysteries, all trying to best to live life in difficult times.
Stephen had a moment straight out of the movie Canadian Bacon - an American spraying graffiti on a van (‘Canada sucks!) and a Mountie makes him spray on the French translation 😂
