This is an old video so here is an update for those interested in this detector. After this video was filmed the detector just sat in my closet for a couple years. When I finally get the metal detecting bug again and took it out all I got was false signals. I tried all different settings and adjustments and it did not fix it. This detector was either defective, or just plain shit. Either way. Save your money, get a Garrett.
I started out with the Bounty Hunter VLF, which is just a step up from being a kids toy. I had more fun with that detector than I ever did with this one. I wish I still had it.
Jeff James fuck a Garrett you don't need that shit. I agree this model is shit that's why when my dad offers me to use it I decline and use my commander The bounty hunter commander is worth it and it's better than this thing by abillion and its simpler
Ok i just have to comment to tell you two guys and everyone else how to coin hunt with the Bounty Hunters(Correctly) which i use and find more coins than people who spent a ton of money on the so-called high end detectors...first thing be in auto notch mode(Best for coin & jewlery) set your sensitivity at about the 9:00 position and descrimination at 10-12:00,,with this setting you will find all coins and gold rings..if you are after gold you will dig alot of zinc pennies and some caps that will fall into the same range...when you were hitting a high tone target slow down and see if you get a double beep as the small inner coil passes the target on each side, look at the ground where you get the first beep then as you sweep to the other side notice where it beeps again,if you have the double high tone beeps you more than likely have a coin, this will pin point it for you and you won't need to dig out the HUGE PLUGS you are digging,,now i use a heavy bowie(survival knife)to first slap the ground as alot of coins will be at surface level and you'll hear it if you hit it,if not i stab the ground and most offen hit the coin and you can flip it out,,very little hole with this method but yes you will nick the coin so i dont use the knife stabbing method when searching areas where very old coins can be found.if not using the knife i use a treasure hunters digging tool you can find online, try different sizes of widths and length, but i Never use a shovel in a park because people are always looking and they will complain if they see you digging to China..good luck and happy hunting everyone.
This is a great comment. You have put down very helpful and accurate advice. I have a bounty hunter (my second one actually) as well as a Minelab GPX 4500 and literally everything in between as well. Your right about them all being good. I actually found the most valuable find with my bounty hunter! I found a 18K gold ring loaded with diamonds, the center one being right at 1.8 carats! It was appraised at 18 thousand dollars! I have found a lot of gold with the Minelab but that's what its specifically engineered for and would actually suck if you tried to use it in a park or high trash area looking for coins. Using your settings and going slow, and most importantly, try and dig every target, and I gaurentee there is no limit as to what you may find with a bounty hunter! Cheers and good luck!
thanks for giving us the info since i started setting my MD at these setting i have been finding a lot of clad and have found 3 rings only thing i don't like about this MD is it don't tell how deep a target is other then that i love it i been find more with this then my buddy that uses the ace 250 lol
I own a Bounty Hunter Challenger (7' Con), Garrett Ace 250 (9.5 DD) , and a Teknetics Delta 4000 (8 Con). Although the BH is a trash magnet you can notch out specific items. Meaning you can scan them in front of the machine and adjust the Disc until you hear the tone break up. This is huge when it comes to high trash sites (nails) while wanting to find relics and coin. I have bench tested it in my mine field and it can separate better than either of my other detectors.
bobinmissouri Although some BH models don't show the depth you can determine the depth if your familiar with the ground type your hunting in and you know the max depth the unit will pull any given coin. Say you have a unknown item at an unknown depth, put the head on the ground and slowly swing then start to raise the coil turning the discrim when the tone becomes broken look at where the discrim is, lets say it says quarter...now you know you have a quarter.. repeat pulling the coil off the ground while swinging note the distance from coil to ground when the signal breaks, say it's 6 inches. if you practice at home say in the same soil type you know the max distance for a quarter is 10 inches.. subtract the distance from the ground 6 inches and you now know you have a quarter at 4 inches in the ground approx.
though I had some problem with sea water It also th-cam.com/users/postUgkxa-FNYUOM93a388gi9a4brtSCEVmrHgJH land for finding any things very easily. (thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn
I have the Bounty Hunter IV I bought last year and love it , to date I have found old rail road spikes from a train tracks that use to run thru my property back in the mid 1800's and I have found around $10.00 in coins and of course some scrap iron and other metals . I would recommend it to everyone I know my wife and three kids love going with me to metal detect , keep up having fun with the detecting and share the fun .
Dale Lyle Thanks for the compliment my brother-in-law bought a more expensive detector and after detecting with me acouple of time he went out and bought a bounty hunter 4 and loves it its much easier to use . I'm looking forward to this year as I'm going to more spots and spending more time detecting . I will keep you informed of the finds . Good luck and keep having fun detecting .
I agree with you. The way he swings that coil he could attach a Sickle to it and cut the grass at the same time. Could of saved buying the lawnmower...LOL
My first detector was the Radio Shack version of this detector, given to me by my father. I loved it, and it got me hooked on the hobby. I have a Garrett ACE 250 now, and working up to an AT Pro. I gave my Discovery 2000 (Radio Shack/Bounty Hunter) to my 12 year old nephew, who is now addicted also. Spreading the love.
I wish someone would have a how to video for these old detectors. My friend passed away and I was given her Bounty Hunter prospector metal detector. My daughter and I are going to use it if I can figure out how to use it.
i have this unit and have found tons of iron, can tabs and some change. It's a ok starter unit, you just have to tune it in just right and get alot of practice with it. You'll find enough nails to build 3 houses but i dig every hit because you never know.
If you want a good pin pointer don't get the BH model. I sold mine 2 weeks after buying it. Get the Garret Pro pointer. Costs more then double but well worth it with its proximity beeping. It will start beeping at least 8-10 inches and will go to a continuous tone at the target.
Even the best detectors will give you a false signal sometimes and for the shovel I found a small shovel with a long handle for five dollars at a yard sale. It's heavy duty and I love it. Good video !!!
I have a bounty hunter, and it does give false signals. One tip I will give you is, take a gold ring and make sure your detector can pick up a signal. If you set it to find coins you will bypass the gold setting. But if you are set for gold, then you will find everything else.
what got me interested in detecting was last summer my riding mower kicked up a v nickel in my yard. a mole was working an old sidewalk to where a house used to be,i live on 3 acres
I just started my new one too but I also learned that power lines will cause a detective so be aware of power lines set your detected where it don't pick up power line
Great video! Just a tip, slow down your swing and you'll find more and deeper targets. As a rule of thumb, slow down to what you think is right, and then cut it in half..haha It works though, when I slowed down I started finding a lot more stuff, and deeper stuff. I have 7 detectors now, including a bounty hunter pioneer 505 and way up to a minelab GPX 4500 and I still love my bounty hunter. It is a very capable coin and treasure machine.
You said that you owned seven detectors. I have a BH Land Ranger Pro. It is good for sucking up quarters at 4 inches or less. But I can't get to coins buried at 6 inches or deeper. Any of your detectors give you eight inches in depth with discrimination. Like to hear from you.
I know this post is old but here goes. You can test your detector by taking a stack of books and putting coins, rings, ect. Under them and you will get an idea of the depth and sensitivity of the detector.
Alo from México , i just got this metal detector and it beeps a lot every time even if theres nothing , do im doing some thing wrong? and the sound its to low, may i have your advice please ?
I just purchased one Used from a local kid for just $50.It looks New but I have not been able too play with it yet due to a severe family emergency.I have wanted one for years of any kind & if I like it I'll splurge & buy a more expensive & better unit later.I live in Northeast Florida where Confederate Troops were camping during the Civil War during the Battle of Olustee.A friend lived just 1/2 mile from where I do now when we were kids & him & his dad had a wall full of Civil War era finds in show cases on their walls.I have no doubt I'll do good even in my yard & a friends yard who lives just two houses from where my friend lived as a kid.
Trust me if he was a professional detectorist as you mentioned he wouldn't be using that piece of shit detector and piss poor excuse of a pinpointer!!!!!!!!!!!
The coil is waterproof but not the upper control box. If you're at the beach, stay in shallow water and just don't let any waves splash up to that control box. And remember to rinse your coil off with fresh water before putting it away. :)
I hate to say it, but I agree with you. This video is old. After we shot this vid the detector sat in my closet for a couple years before I actually got it out again. Same thing. just false signal after false signal. No matter what I did or adjustments I made. It is shit. or defective.
+Jeff James this been sitting in the closet for months but not because it doesn't work but got bored with it. I bought this for my wife but I ended up being the one to use it when I bothered with it. Tomorrow my brother-in-law going to borrow it to see what he can find after the fire to his house here in Northern California.
I had a Fast Tracker (Bounty Hunter) and like you got a lot of false signals. I now have my second Whites and still get false signals at times. I don't understand them because the detector will holler like crazy, but when you dig you get nothing, Also, about a shovel, I bought a nice little shovel at an ACE hardware store for $9.00. It is really a spade I guess and looks like a mini-shovel.
Hey, thanks for takin the time. Just lost my dear wife to a stroke, and needed a hobby again to keep me busy. When the ground thaws here be hitting the State Parks. 100% disabled Vets get a card for free entry into them. Pastor Marc
👎I did not like your video. From what I seen the metal detector either sucked ass, or the operator sucked ass most will agree that it was both! To rigorous and passive when using this metal detector .. Used the probing device as a digging tool?? 👎👎👎
the target may be just on the fringe of the range of the detector. i have a sharpsooter 2 and a coinmastet GT and they are both great midrange detectors.
I liked the video. Nice camera work, good editing AND you showed the frustration of the sport of searching for lost treasure. Hmmmmm, maybe this isn't a good way for me to walk on the beach? It's not relaxing, but it looked rather annoying with all the false readings. A good video will sell me on the sport or warn me of its downsides as well. Thank you.
How do you like this detector overall? Wanting to get Ito the hobby but don't want to spend a ton to try it out. If I like it I'd probably upgrade later.
I am liking it but it's a bit schizophrenic around gravel and very hard packed earth. Other wise it is really very nice! As for depth , I really can't tell ... normally with in about 6 inches or so.
I just got one for Christmas and am looking forward to using it too. want to get the pin pointer probe as well and make a shovel, good vid subscribed....Tim
Trust me guys, Bounty Hunters do a great job for finding coins, maybe not extremely deep but all in all good detectors. I've done just as good with mine as some other big names you know.
Makes me want to get mine out. I never liked detecting in the summer, ground is dry and depth isnt as good .Spring is best. I found a really nice ring ( silver) in a relandscaped yard so just dig.its part of the sport. By the way, gold rings sound like nickles.never assume its junk unless you are in a high trash . I found my best coins under trash.
Oddly enough I just used that detector Monday. I was at a park and some guy in a neighboring home brought this detector out and asked if I could help him figure out how to use it. Set it all metal walked over to the grass strip between the sidewalk and road and started scanning around a rather large palm tree and beep, beep. dig dig dig through 1000 Palm worm roots and found 100 1964 silver Dimes in what was left of a ladies nylon. 20 seconds of scanning and 20 minutes of digging was all it took.
I bought a bounty hunter pioneer, while I wait for my garette. It finds a lot of stuff, but it doesn't discriminate very well.ive tried on the all metal, disc and tone. I can get rid of some iron some of the time. Iam hoping the garette does a better job
I have not used it since the day we did this video. But once the weather breaks I will be putting it to the test and will do a complete review then. Thanks for watching.
Besides moving it too fast, your not keeping your swing even. You need to keep the detector parallel to the ground, rather then having the left of it almost touching the ground, and the right a inch or more higher.
the falsing is more than likely from tipping the coil whilst swinging,i had a lonestar a few years back really good on clad dimes and pennies, not real deep though usually 3-5 inches maybe lots of fun, nice video
Jeff, I love the way that you guys show your consideration for other yards and properties, not of your own. We need more metal detectorists in this world, to have your mentality. (If) we (did), maybe a lot of the places that are now off limits would never have been made off limits but as you guys probably know, all it takes are 'a few bad apples to ruin the whole bunch' so thanks for bringing this very important principle up so as to gently remind people who metal detect, to always remember and be mindful to 'leave things the way they were'. Thanks.
Hi Guys, I'm here as beginner, got myself sharp shooter 2. Ready to start new hobby. What is best and worst with this think, trying to get on the beaches. Is this good tool or I'm waiting time. Thank you for any feedback.
My Radio Shack Discovery (just a re-branded Bounty Hunter) did that once in a while, I noticed it was due to low/weak batteries, and sometimes over-head wires would make it go nuts. I kept giving me an awesome signal around one tree in my yard, so good that I thought I had buried treasure in the tree!! Turned out it was just the high-line wires making it act up. LOL
I have a BH tracker IV analog. When i lose a signal like that i switch to all metal if the ground is no to trash you can find what it hit on. It is not the best metal detector gut it is a half way decent one. I go mine for $71 hobby lobby coupon. So good for us poor people lol Id love a garrett at pro but i will never have the $600 for one.
spiderbite1978 great machine very underrated, the meter is worthless but the machine has great functions and capabilities. I set my discrimination to where it just picks up a nickel, then I switch over and hunt in all metal, which gives you more depth and sensitivity. Once I get a nice repeatable target, I simply toggle over to discrim mode to check if its a good target or not. I do this same method with most of my other machines.
Falsing could come from wet/damp grass, but it can also signify that the detector coil does not have enough shielding. But this is a bounty hunter which is entry level in some respects.
I have a Bounty Hunter Land Ranger Pro. So far this year I have found over 4,000 coins including closely 1,600 quarters. Just one park itself, I have found over $86 in coins and 270 quarters. The size of the park is about 300 ft x 300 ft. I have been there numerous times. Last week, I spent about three hours there, 35 quarters, 28 dimes. I was averaging 30 coins an hour. I am hoping to get 300 quarters and $100 from this park before the end of the year.
If your worried if it works or not, just throw some change on the grass, a penny a nickel, a quarter, a pop tab an some foil an some type of silver coin if you have one.. do a test run, set it at 12 oclock an the other at 3 oclock

Wow!!! 9 years ago ,,,, since then the shovel broke but still have the vibra probe and it still works great . Cool seeing this vid hi Jeff
i have this unit and have found tons of iron, can tabs and some change. It's a ok starter unit, you just have to tune it in just right and get alot of practice with it. You'll find enough nails to build 3 houses but i dig every hit because you never know.

Losing signals after digging a plug should be a rare occurrence, especially with a pin pointer.
They didn’t use the pinpointer tho. I have this discovery 3300 and if the sensitivity is turned up too high it will give false readings
what got me interested in detecting was last summer my riding mower kicked up a v nickel in my yard. a mole was working an old sidewalk to where a house used to be,i live on 3 acres

Folks, do not use your pointer to dig. They are not designed for digging.

what kind of pin pointer is James using?
He said, “It’s a pain in the a** when you’re off by an inch.”
Thats what he said!
U dont use pin pointer metal detectors to dig with
Where did you get the $20 shovel?
Kristyn Michael he said he made it himself if you listened to the video.
Nice looking soil. I wish I had as good in my garden.
Haba bien csta verga
Slow down your sweeps & you will find much more stuff.Get a pair of gloves as well.

Great vid really enjoyed watching it!
Trust me if he was a professional detectorist as you mentioned he wouldn't be using that piece of shit detector and piss poor excuse of a pinpointer!!!!!!!!!!!
First off, it was MY detector that we were messing with. Where are your videos Mr Expert?
is it waterproof
The coil is waterproof but not the upper control box. If you're at the beach, stay in shallow water and just don't let any waves splash up to that control box. And remember to rinse your coil off with fresh water before putting it away. :)
bad detector

were did you get the pinpointer
Its no wonder you get so many false signals. You go way to fast in your swing. I have a $130 dollar, cheap detector, and never had a false signal.

It used for short range
Pinpointed is a mini metal scanner
the target may be just on the fringe of the range of the detector. i have a sharpsooter 2 and a coinmastet GT and they are both great midrange detectors.
that is a nice shovel
ive always learned to swing the md slowly. not back n forth really fast. cuz you cant detect its spot if your all over swingin. just sayin.
i thank the bounty hunter 4 is the best cheaper detector for beginner's
I liked the video. Nice camera work, good editing AND you showed the frustration of the sport of searching for lost treasure. Hmmmmm, maybe this isn't a good way for me to walk on the beach? False signal means cable wire loose near the coil...
How do you like this detector overall? Wanting to get Ito the hobby but don't want to spend a ton to try it out. If I like it I'd probably upgrade later.
Honestly. I have used this detector twice since I made this video (3 years ago). I really do not like it. Garret has some better beginner detectors.
Jeff James
Jeff James Thanks for the reply. I've been looking at some of theirs as well.
Why do you just lose signals? Because the Bounty Hunter Ranger SUCKS!! I have one trust me.
loose cable
Cool vid dude. Where you get the shovel?
sweet videos slower sweeps
change to all metal then pinpoint
check the pice of mud in 1:15 next to your feet.
Useful, Thank you. Aloha! Paul = Your Brother from another Mother!!!
I went out today with my new Quicksilver and have a question. Is it supposed to go nuts around gravel/asphalt areas like beside a road ?
I am liking it but it's a bit schizophrenic around gravel and very hard packed earth. Other wise it is really very nice! As for depth , I really can't tell ... normally with in about 6 inches or so.
just an update the grass grew back
no getting false signals means its a toy metal detector from Walmart lol junk
Yo dude where can I get that pinpointer?

+timothy cort Awesome. Get out there and enjoy it. You will love it.
I just got one today for Christmas
timothy cort same
getting false signals means the left knob needs turned counter clock wise
I just got my self the same one any advice
Devin Martins Yes,give him his back and buy your own. 😂
What setting did you have it on? all metal, disk, or auto notch?
Trust me guys, Bounty Hunters do a great job for finding coins, maybe not extremely deep but all in all good detectors. I've done just as good with mine as some other big names you know.
Your both a couple of nit wits
bobcatwelder00 lol, one of my dad's sayings, or dim wit.
lol...men...lol
Lol
How would I like to have a metal detector, it's great, but when the damage can not himself afford a metal detector ..
Boneyfreak ia
Boneyfreak what did the lady look like with the torn stockings? LOL 😂
I bought that metal detector in 2006 at walmart and it's mediocre.
+Alfonso Ramos walmart where i live does not even deal in metal detectors now
Yea but they did back then.
Its 2020 and here in Maryland they still sell them at Walmart.
Those hole gouges of dirt and grass die and you start getting patches of dead grass and it's very obvious especially when the grass is green
grass grew back once the bobcat was done re landscaped
dumb ass you should only dig two way signals
Thank you finally a comment that helps
Where did you buy that shovel?
good video
I like how down to earth you guys are and funny lol, cheers!!
This model is the lone star? Gracias
I bought a bounty hunter pioneer, while I wait for my garette. It finds a lot of stuff, but it doesn't discriminate very well.ive tried on the all metal, disc and tone. I can get rid of some iron some of the time. Iam hoping the garette does a better job
What type of metal detector was that
Thanks for that info, just got a lone, star and not sure I like it so much.
I have not used it since the day we did this video. But once the weather breaks I will be putting it to the test and will do a complete review then. Thanks for watching.
Where can you get the 20 dollar shovel?
Besides moving it too fast, your not keeping your swing even. You need to keep the detector parallel to the ground, rather then having the left of it almost touching the ground, and the right a inch or more higher.
for my pin pointer I use the harbor freight pointy handheld detector...
the falsing is more than likely from tipping the coil whilst swinging,i had a lonestar a few years back really good on clad dimes and pennies, not real deep though usually 3-5 inches maybe lots of fun, nice video
Jeff,
I love the way that you guys show your consideration for other yards and properties, not of your own. Thanks.
Hi Guys,
I'm here as beginner,
got myself sharp shooter 2.
Ready to start new hobby.
What is best and worst with this think, trying to get on the beaches.
Is this good tool or I'm waiting time.
Thank you for any feedback.
dude why you swing so fast? you miss targets swinging like a maniac!
Hey I have that same detector but mine beeps at nothing as soon as I turn it on it goes nuts is it my batteries
it could be the battery make sure you have fresh and matching batteries or make sure that the plug is pushed all the way in on the unit
I'm having the same exact issue, were you able to fix it?
My Radio Shack Discovery (just a re-branded Bounty Hunter) did that once in a while, I noticed it was due to low/weak batteries, and sometimes over-head wires would make it go nuts. I kept giving me an awesome signal around one tree in my yard, so good that I thought I had buried treasure in the tree!! Turned out it was just the high-line wires making it act up. LOL
Bluesguitar2020 could be loose cable and make sure you use alkaline batteries, heavy duty wont last long at all and could give off false readings
Thanks for the tips. As a rule I dont discriminate and dig all targets.
Would it work on the beach
LOL... that face when you say " whattaya think James?" Bwhahahaa... it's a 7
That is an amazing detector, I think it is on the upper scale of bounty hunter detectors. Not a cheapy thats for sure lol
keep up the great videos man
Falsing could come from wet/damp grass, but it can also signify that the detector coil does not have enough shielding. But this is a bounty hunter which is entry level in some respects.
looks like you be having fun this summer
I have a Bounty Hunter Land Ranger Pro. So far this year I have found over 4,000 coins including closely 1,600 quarters. Just one park itself, I have found over $86 in coins and 270 quarters. The size of the park is about 300 ft x 300 ft. I have been there numerous times. Last week, I spent about three hours there, 35 quarters, 28 dimes. I was averaging 30 coins an hour. I am hoping to get 300 quarters and $100 from this park before the end of the year.
whyicare wow! I just bought this one. It's cheap 99$. Do you know if the coil is waterproof
If your worried if it works or not, just throw some change on the grass, a penny a nickel, a quarter, a pop tab an some foil an some type of silver coin if you have one.. do a test run, set it at 12 oclock an the other at 3 oclock
Very good😊
What you said at starting at 1:30 & ended at 1:34 is just what my Ex-Fiance said once. She is now my EX-Fiancé. lol 😂
Pain in the ass, missed it by an inch, wrong hole.
Jeff was so so happy! he found a hotdog
I guess you have to be smarter than the detector to operate it properly?
Or you can just go online and leave dickish comments on random videos...
I’m getting an Equinox 600
