My family was never much on taking care of tools, so this is really something I needed. And I needed the information to be budget friendly. Thanks

True. Sandpaper does the trick with knives and planes as well but find a hunk of granite or marble countertop to glue the sand paper to. A good piece of leather adds an extra polish to the finish. I buy my leather at Goodwill or get it from an old purses or belt. My grandfather (I'm 70) had a concave plane of glass that he would strop and sharpen his razor blades with. Yes, he sharpened his razor blades. Have we come a long way? Not certain.

Thanks for sharing. I was looking at the Felco 905 sharpener (not terribly impressed) because I can’t find my Felco diamond sharpener. I have a Corona sharpener that I use occasionally (on both my Felco and Corona hand pruners, but I don’t really like using it - seems a little coarse to me.
And as you noted, all expensive.
So I’ll give your method a try. I’ve seen videos on sharpening my hand chisels using wet-or-dry sandpaper, and if it’s good enough for woodworking tools, it’s good enough for my gardening secateurs. (Fancy word I just learned)

I sharpen my chisels with sandpaper. Plane blades too. The old timers did it. I learned about it from an old timer who could put very useful edges on his woodworking tools with sandpaper. Not necessarily as sharp as possible but respectably sharp and of practical use. 👍

The inside of the blade should NOT be sharpened, it is supposed to be flat, just like scissors, the bevel goes ONLY on the outside

    I don't get it.
Felco made a sharpening tool (the 903) especially for their pruners. It's made of hardened steel coated with a fine diamond film. It will last you a lifetime and it costs a few pennies.
With some experience you sharp your pruner like new under 10 seconds.

…and just as important to maintain the other blade, which must be FLAT and with a 90’ edge and absolutely. NO BEVEL

I am inspired!! This is just what I needed. I have needed very much to sharpen two pair of pruners for years, and now I know how, and know I can do by myself. I pruned nearly 30 trees in January. Thanks so much, Herrick.

Thanks! My Felcos need cleaning and sharpening before spring pruning. Do you ever take yours apart to clean them?

Not yet. It would be easier to sharpen the blade if disassembled, but as long as my blade is only slightly dull and the handles work smoothly I don’t want to take the time to disassemble. Thanks for the question. 👍🏻

Hello, new viewer here. After I saw you give the blades a silicon spray I got to wondering if you could do a video on the various lubricants available (dry lube, silicone, lithium grease, WD40… there’s so many - I buy them all, but don’t really know what’s best for any particular job) Thanks!

I buy them all too and don't know which is best either. 🙂
I get a lot of different aerosol products from garage and estate sales. Lots cheaper that way. 👍

I did a similar process simply by folding the sandpaper over a flat steel painters tool. A steel ruler would be similar.

Thank you very much for your books and videos ! I enjoy them very much ! Have you ever thought about a silver soldering video, on how to repair small tools ?
