    Im a simple person with a simple faith, the prayer rope helps me to pray the "jesus prayer" until i go to sleep. I like big knots comfortable for arthritic hands. I love the massive 300 knot prayer rope! I have not stayed awake for all 300 knots. Thanks for this video!

    I am not Orthodox (I think about it often, though). I use a prayer rope in my personal ascetic practice, on a daily basis. I have also read The Way of the Pilgrim. This video has been helpful for putting it in context. Thank you for sharing, Father.

    Thanks for clarifying for us ignorant sinners, who know not what we do. I ran into an Orthodox video, it told a story about the prayer rope burning demons. It reminded me of when I was baptized at 7 yrs old, my grandma telling me not to play with that, that it was not a toy, or just a fashion statement, I thought she was just being polite, but it did have a certain energy, I kept brushing the priest on the face with it, it was as if she knew something I didn't, now I understand

      You’re one of those people who has never had the baptism by fire yet walks around thinking the Holy Spirit has got your back and a son of man being tortured to death saves you and brings you to heaven. No Theosis = no Holy Spirit = no salvation… and THATS that. Jesus wasn’t here just to tell you he’s a sacrificial lamb and if he dies your saved. He was here to show you the way to theosis. I bet you think “the way the truth and the life” was just a cool catchphrase Jesus liked to say huh? No, it’s actually he showed you the truth so you would follow the life which is the way to theosis. If people don’t catch on to this Christianity is going to die a slow death and the Muslims who take their god way more serious than you take yours will be huffing and puffing to blow your house down.

    A few years ago, maybe 3 or 4, on the Yom Kippur Holiday's last hours, I was asking apology to our LORD, God for I was not fasting and neither praying, the whole day, and I was also very tired such I couldn't do any prayer, BUT I just had ONE Question towards Him, to our Father in heavens:
    "WHY are we living THIS LIFE (with all the hardships, illnesses, etc...)?"
    The Answer - His Answer! - came SO QICK into my mind, as a thought, that I was astonished! Into an instant (!) I had:
    "We must LEARN
    TO LOVE."
    P.S. I was an Orthodox Christian myself as well till 7 years ago. When I gave myself (all my sins & my last passion) to the LORD, God, and I have received in return His Son. A Cosmical river of Light! He saved my life; He has given me a new Life, new eyes...
    His Son - that Light - is so Holy, Holy, Holy !!! !!! !!!
    I had - that time - no idea even of the Bible... :( But my faith in Him, in the LORD God, in His existence was there, in me, all the time, all of my life... :)
    Though, the PRAYER is essential !
    SHALOM ba'Yeshua Mashiach!

    Fr. David Smith, I was born with a genetic anomaly that affects my bones - and includes neurological issues affecting my brain. I've have two brain surgeries, and am awaiting a third procedure to correct some post-operative complications from the last one. During my medical odyssey toward healing, a Priest gave me what he called a Chotki and taught me the Jesus Prayer (we have a large Russian Orthodox population in my community, and I count them as friends). I have found that incorporating the Chatki and Jesus Prayer have been such a soothing comfort and blessing to my anxious mind and soul prior to the surgeries - and as a reminder to pray without ceasing. I'm a mainstream Protestant, a member of the Church of my beloved Grandfather. Honoring Litergical traditions in our services, my Pastor has recently lent me the book: Behold The Beauty Of The Lord, Praying With Icons, by Henri J.M. Nouwen. I have since been informed by some of the Orthodox Community that I shouldn't have/use a Chotki or the Jesus Prayer as I'm not of the Orthodox faith. Would you please share your thoughts on this?

    • @fr.davidsmith463
      @fr.davidsmith463  7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      The ones who tell you not to pray the Jesus Prayer are incorrect. It is a prayer for all Christians, and I hope will be a prayer that leads you into God's will and healing. Nouwen's book is great, right?

    Is it bad or wrong to want to take some practices from both the Western and the Eastern Catholic churches? I am converting to Orthodox Christianity but I feel like there is nothing wrong with having both a Orthodox prayer rope and a Roman Catholic Rosary and praying with them both. I want to pray with both daily but I am asking what you think as a member of the Orthodox Clergy. It's very hard for me in same regards as you might be able to imagine. I am an Italian American. My mother's father was a Sicilian Roman Catholic and my father's father was a Piemontese Roman Catholic. My mother's mother was a Irish Roman Catholic and my father's mother was an Italian American Roman Catholic. I have come to believe that the Orthodox way is the correct path but it is a bit culturally different and something I struggle with just a bit. It might sound silly but like the art in the Churches is different. Since I was a child I would look up at the Beautiful Stained Glass and get spiritual inspiration from it. Even as I sang in church I was constantly looking at them trying to clearly picture who I was praying to and always being inspired by the colors in the light. Having the rosary reminds me of those nostalgic moments, and the moments i would pray with my now deceased Grandfather. In this context would you find it sinful in any way?

    • @servusChristietMariae
      @servusChristietMariae 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Count Asti, I encourage you to read the church fathers and to embrace your ancestry, to embrace the greatness of traditional Catholicism, as practiced for 2000yrs., If you are truely looking for the truth you will only find it in the Holy Roman and Apostolic Catholic Church, the church of your grandfathers and great-grandfathers.

    • @WolfgangOSS
      @WolfgangOSS 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s one of the great things about the relationship between the Catholic and Orthodox Church today, in short yes you can use both the rosary and the prayer rope, you can even accept the Eucharist at both Catholic and Orthodox churches

    • @TheRealRealOK
      @TheRealRealOK 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Aidan Burgess No so! Just because Roman Catholics allow Orthodox to commune doesn’t mean we allow it. Catholics can’t commune with us and we aren’t allowed to commune with them. We’re very different churches. Your ecumenism is heretical.

    We are all sinners but I am not sure repeating the same thing over and over makes us believe it any more - unless we have actually just sinned. Its really hard to be truly contrite of heart for any sin which we definitely should be towards God. I feel we should work towards that by mediating on Gods goodness and our weakness and then asking God for mercy and forgiveness. Endless repetition has its flaws but can help brainwash us to a truth at times..in other times leads to a false belief that we are repentant...

      @fr.davidsmith463  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not exactly, although they share some characteristics. The main difference is that the prayers said while using the prayer rope and the rosary are very different.

    I hope that I'm not being irreverent, but something I've noticed is that Orthodox fathers tend to have beards more often than those in the Catholic or Protestant tradition, as well as (going by this video and others) longer hair. Father Tom has a full-on ponytail. Is cutting the hair prohibited, like a Leviticus 19:27 thing? Or is it just more of a cultural thing? Just curious.

      It's not an irreverent question at all! Cutting the hair and beard was at times in history prohibited, but it's not now. It's more of a traditional expression of the faith than it is cultural. Most of us have beards, but not all, and some keep their beards and hair trimmed.

      Is there anywhere online where I can find like a stream or podcast of daily worship and study? I'd like to see what Orthodoxy is all about. I've kinda bounced between Catholicism, non-denominational Protestantism, and Native American traditions. Unfortunately, the nearest Orthodox church is over 2 hours away.

      That's not cultural thing, Orthodox priests and monks want to leave their bodies like they were made by the God. I'm sorry for my English but i'm a Polish :)

      hello; your observation is very clear indicating Levitical; keep in mind that sometimes extreme scripture is symbolic and tighten this topic or make a tail hair are two very different things read well? Shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard. I hope you see the difference miguel cuervo an Orthodox Jew and if you try to talk about the hanging tail hair possible comfort is everything

      The Jesus Prayer is the essence of repetition, but it's not vain. We say it over and over, but always with the purpose of the healing of the image of God in us.

      Fr. David Smith On a number of occasions, I've suddenly realized I'm half way through either the Lord's Prayer, or the Jesus Prayer. I have no recollection of starting the prayer. I've also woken up, in the middle of saying one of these prayers. I'm concerned that this is vain repitition. More specifically, if it is vain repitition, how do I stop it?

      biblestudysoftware Not the Father, but I would advise saying the prayer again, this time really think about each word of the prayer. Do it slowly. It may even take several minutes. Bit by the end you will have said a very wholesome prayer.
