I would love to be more in touch with it, sadly in Latin America Eastern tradition doesn't make many apparitions, I am from Nicaragua and lived in Honduras and have never met any practicing Orthodox nor any Eastern Rite Catholics. The only one is a cousin her dad is Orthodox I think and she went to Orthodox church while living in Palestine, but she claims herself as Catholic. Such a shame it's not deep in our culture since even some catholics have gone away from their catholic rites, I have always loved the serenity that comes to the soul with Eastern liturgy at least from the few videos I have watched. No churches, no people no Eastern very sad.
      Shalom aleihem.

Respecting others in a pluralistic society is important, but it doesn't mean accepting practices that conflict with the truth of Christ. I'm a Greek Orthodox and I can't even begin to tell you the benefits of praying this constantly. A little advice though; At first it's not going to be easy because you're going to be distracted constantly. For instance when saying the prayer over and over again with your prayer rope, you should erase all secular thoughts from your nous [mind]. Trust me you'll see how hard that is in the beginning, especially when you reach a certain number, Satan will do his best to distract your concentration. Nevertheless stay with it and trust me you'll see how beneficial it truly is. God love you all.

@Colin Sheehan well one is the negative way (see apophatic theology) and the other is the positive way; both are valid and effective, and both are approved by East and West alike, although the positive way was always more in line with the Latins and the negative way with the Greeks. Orthodox converts tend to be snobs in relation to Catholicism but what I find most interesting in most cases is that they don't understand the practices revealed to medieval Saints and developed in the Western church in general; you must understand that the most Orthodox way, strictly speaking, is the positive way, since it's derived directly from the Bible, which is structured according to positive theology, while the negative way was something developed along the lines of earlier, more foreign traditions. More concerning the Marian Rosary, it contains mysteries and effects that the median adherent doesn't have the least idea about, and it is rather difficult and rare to get to advanced levels of praying and understanding the Rosary. Not to be offensive, but judging by the way you speak of it (and also by the fact that you're converting to ortodoxy), I imagine you have not the least idea about what the Rosary really conceals within itself. If I can give you an advice, I'd say that, as a Catholic, I don't mind traditional Orthodox Christians from orthodox countries being orthodox, since I recognize there is real, authentic spirituality in the Orthodox Church (even if we disagree institutionally), something it preserved better than the Latins, however, usually when I encounter westerners, Catholics, converting to ortodoxy, most of the times, it is wrong and damaging psychological causes that motivate it, as well as a severe lack of understanding of Catholic doctrine and spirituality in general (while being true that we didn't preserve our spirituality as well, Catholic Tradition and spirituality was vivid and as strong as it gets up until the end of the middle ages, and what we inherited from those times can still be practiced in the West, just like in the East, since in a deeper level there are really not many differences - if any - between the two).

      S. Zúñiga What are prayer beads? Is it okay to use beads while praying?
Prayer beads, sometimes called rosary beads, are used in the practice of meditation and prayer. Prayers are repeated a number of times corresponding with the number of beads. Prayer or rosary beads have traditionally been associated with Catholicism, but the use of prayer beads is widespread, with many religious traditions incorporating them.
The basic rosary is made up of 59 beads linked together in a shape that looks like a necklace. Each of the beads on the rosary is intended to have a prayer said while holding the individual bead. Of these beads, 53 are for “Hail Mary’s” to be said on them. The other six are intended for “Our Fathers.” These beads provide a physical method of keeping count of the prayers as the fingers are moved along the beads as the prayers are recited.
The history of the rosary in Christian circles has been traced back to the Crusades. It is thought by historians that the Crusaders had adopted this practice from the Arabs, who, in turn, copied the observance of using beads from India. Recent archeological findings reveal that the ancient Ephesians made use of such beads in their worship of Diana, also known as Artemis, whose temple was one of the seven wonders of the world (Acts 19:24-41).
Prayer beads are also used by Roman Catholics to help the practitioner keep track of some 180 prayers which make up the rosary. Examples of such prayers are Our Father, Hail Mary, and Gloria. The practice of the rosary is based on the assumption that repeating these prayers over and over enables the petitioner to secure merit or favor from God in order to escape from the punishment of the fires of purgatory.
The use of prayer beads is not scriptural. Jesus Himself chastised the religious leaders of His time for repeating their prayers over and over. In fact, He told His disciples not to emulate them by using “vain repetitions as the heathen do, for they think they will be heard for their many words” (Matthew 6:7). Prayers are not to be merely recited or repeated mindlessly as though they are automatic formulas. Many who use prayer beads today claim that the rosary helps them take the focus off themselves and onto Christ, but the question is really one of the efficacy of repeating the same phrases over and over in a mantra-like manner.
Prayer is an incredible privilege for the Christian, as we are invited by the Creator of the universe to come “boldly” into His presence (Hebrews 4:16) and communicate with Him. Prayer is the means by which we praise Him, adore Him, give thanks to Him, submit to Him, and bring before Him petitions for ourselves and intercessions for others. It’s hard to see how that intimate communion with Him is enhanced by repeating simple prayers over and over again via prayer beads.

Me and my fiance recently visited Assisi, and on the train there from Florence I had told her about the Jesus Prayer, which she had never heard of, and she immediately fell in love with it. The following day, we visited the Basilica of St. Clare and spent some time in prayer before the Cross of San Damiano, perhaps the most powerful time of prayer either of us had ever experienced. Shortly afterwards we were at a cafe near the old Temple of Minerva and we started talking about our experience before the Cross and discovered that we had both been praying the Jesus Prayer over and over without knowing that the other was doing the same. Again, my fiance had only learned this prayer the day before our visit to Assisi and yet by some strange grace we prayed the same prayer together without knowing it. It was an amazing moment.

I'm basically trying to immerse myself as much as humanly possible, and while I'm starting the Catholic journey, I am very open to adding some Orthodox traditions as well. Although I've grown to enjoy all kinds of prayers, I do tend to really enjoy ritualistic/meditative forms so I've gotten quite into the Rosary, and The Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and definitely plan to get a chotki for the Jesus Prayer. I realize I don't necessarily NEED a physical object to say such a simple prayer; however, I enjoy having these sort of things and it helps me get into it more for some reason, as well is more motivation to do it because it's something im going to pick up and set time for.

This is definitely one of those things that does keep your mind on Jesus all the time and grows your communion with Him. While it does not have any of the same graces and promises that the rosary has (you should totally pray your rosary at least once a day), this is something that is really beautiful in its simplicity. So glad to see a western Catholic channel touch on this practice from the east that we should incorporate more often into our lives!

The words, " have mercy on me a sinner. " as used in the Jesus Prayer or Prayer of the Heart, encompass the Eastern Christian understanding of both the terms 'mercy' and 'sinner'. The prayer in Greek:" Kyrie Ihsou Christe, Yie tou Theou, eleison me ton amartolon." is translated thus: " Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me the sinner. " ( there is no article ' a ' in Greek, so the article 'ton' meaning 'the' is used ). Look at the term 'eleison' - it is derived for the word 'elaio' meaning oil - specifically olive oil, which in ancient times was used for healing. So, when we say 'eleison me' or 'have mercy on me' we are actually asking God ( Jesus Christ ) to heal us spiritually, physically and emotionally. The English words ' have mercy on me ' evoke the idea that we are asking God to spare us from His wrath. The term for sin in Greek is 'amartia ' which is a compound of 'a' = away from + 'martia' = the mark. It is an archery term. Envision an archer drawing back the bow string and letting his arrow fly - he is trying to hit the bull's eye, but often 'misses the mark'. We as sinners attempt to follow God's laws but often 'miss the mark', therefore we continue to practice good marksmanship, knowing that we'll never hit the bull's eye 100% of the time. So when we pray ' eleison me ton amartolon' we are in essence asking the Lord to heal us of our shortcomings, our failure to hit the mark consistently. The English term 'sin' is derived from the Latin word 'sona' which means 'guilt'. In Western Christianity the attitude of sin and guilt are entwined. The word sin denotes a state of being where we are always in search of forgiveness for things we do that make us feel 'guilty'. There is quite a contrast in point of view between East and West when the Jesus Prayer is practiced in accordance with how certain terms are understood in their original sense.

'missing the mark' what is the mark- God's laws? i think that the mark is rather feeling and behaving like a 'thing' separate from God= living as an 'ego'. There is no room for me and God- it is either mammon or God that one chooses to follow. Mammon means allowing oneself to live driven by fear and desire despite Jesus's clear direction to live without worry for the body ["... look at the birds of the air..."]. Isn't this the law rather?! So missing the mark to me is believing that God is present in all his creation but me= the sinner/the one who misses the mark- how is that possible?! To stop sinning is to allow the grace and will of God to take precedence over 'my will', to allow all that is transitory to follow its course of coming and going without resisting/judging, permanently conscious that there is only God and God's will- manifesting in all and any happenings. The request for mercy is not asking to spare us of any wrath but for grace in remembering the error made in believing that I am this body, separate from God and that I need to defend it and take action in fixing what in my sinful thinking consider God's shortcomings by 'allowing the world to spin' in a different direction than the one I want.

    • @jaycorby
      @jaycorby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

daisilui - Yes, God's continual outpouring of grace heals our wounds ( spiritual, emotional, physical ). The oil of compassion and healing ( grace ) is that applied by the Good Samaritan ( Christ ) upon the wounds of the man ' beaten and half dead ' on the road from Jericho to Jerusalem ( we sinners ). The words ' eleison me ' in Greek = ' have mercy on me ' in English. The term ' eleison ' is rooted in the Greek word for 'oil'. However, each of us must be open to the grace ( medicine ) that is offered by the Great Physician . No palliative effect will ensue if we refuse to take that which is prescribed. LORD JESUS CHRIST, SON OF GOD, HAVE MERCY ON ME THE SINNER.

It's a good place to start for information. The website also has a listing of all the churches in US I believe. If you do find a church in your area, its always a good place to go to talk to the priest there. Most in my experience are loaded with information and love to share. I hope that helps for start. Jennifer Rinaldi Thank you, Jennifer, for responding! I have read up on the Byzantine Rite, since I believe in the Catholic teachings, but I grew up Greek Orthodox in Greece my whole life. I'm going to University in Germany and as far as I know, there are no Byzantine Catholic Churches there. I'm currently in Greece and there's only one Byzantine Church here. Haven't visited it yet, though. I was asking, because the only reason I could see someone joining the Byzantine Rite is if someone agrees with Catholic Theology, but prefers the Eastern aesthetic. Is there any other reason I don't know of? Why did your mother join it? Why are you still part of it?

Damian My grandparents were a mixed Rite couple; my grandmother was Roman Catholic and my grandfather was Byzantine. At the time, my grandmother was told she had to follow his Rite. In turn my mom and her siblings were raised here in NJ at our parish here. After my parents divorce we moved here and started attending her church that she grew up in. I still belong to my parish as it's what I'm most used to but I also attend Mass sometimes at the local Roman parish. What I enjoy about the Byzantine Rite are the traditions.

You can also simplify the whole thing and just pray the name of Jesus, over and over again. That's how I do it. I found that saying the whole traditional prayer gets my brain lost and my mind wandering. Just praying the name of Jesus, slowly and with my breath, is more than enough. I can pray His name in adoration, in supplication, in repentance, etc.

'The Jesus Prayer' is one of my favorite prayers. I once saw a documentary about it & in the course of the documentary they interviewed several Orthodox nuns & monks. Everything they said about God/Christ and Christianity seemed SO profound & resonated deeply with me. So deeply, in fact, that I converted to Orthodox Christianity. It still astounds me to this day the fulfillment & blessings the Orthodox faith & the closeness with God has brought into my life.

I'm not Catholic, yet. Don't have a rosary. After having a divine break through of repentance this past week, I've been drawn to watch a lot of Catholic based videos on TH-cam where I came across this video.
Wanting a deeper connection to our Savior, I went to my room to say this prayer. Because I don't have a rosary, I opted to set a timer for ten minutes believing my unpracticed mind would grow tired within five. I committed to not looking at the timer, instead focused on what I was saying and how I felt speaking each word.
I was shocked when the alarm went off. Did not feel like I'd been on my knees that long. I don't what to think about that.

Being Italian, I like to use this prayer in Latin too: “Domine Iesu Christe, fili Dei, miserēre mei peccatoris”.. And for our Eastern fellows it may sound more familiar in Greek: Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ, Υιέ του Θεού, ελέησόν με τον αμαρτωλόν..
