I'd love to have seen people's faces by the time the 5th consecutive Murmur track was played and people probably started to think "are they going to do the whole album?"

I was at this show. It took me a few songs before I realized they were playing Murmur all the way through as it was originally released. I talked to Peter later about that choice. He said they were influenced by seeing The Who do Tommy on tour and for this benefit show they wanted to do something special so ran through the Murmur & Green albums.

Incredible to experience this legendary show from the crowd, the chaos, the excitement, a real feeling of being there. Thank you for sharing. What a victory lap for REM this was

Watching this video makes me realize how, at this point in their career, R.E.M. still had their early sound completely intact, and it was probably at its live-performance peak, due to their accrued level of experience and higher stage-production budget. Sadly, this really would be the end of it, and we would never see it again. I like the band across all eras, but their early sound will always be the best R.E.M. for me. Great video. Thank you for posting.

Agree, by the time they returned to touring with Monster a felt a lot of that young skittish energy had gone. The sound was sludgier and Michael’s voice was beginning to sound tired. Here they sound like the REM I always loved

Thanks SO MUCH for this. I lived and attended high school in the Atlanta area at this time and had gone to the Omni shows in the spring of ‘89 but couldn’t get a ticket for this show. But a friend (whose parents were connected to the benefit organization, I think) did go and the next day when she murmured to me the show’s special format, I was green with envy. The show took on a mysterious, almost mythical dimension-but thanks to this upload, I am at long last experiencing it!

Wow...can’t believe this is posted. Thank you. Like Timfear, I was there as well. As I recall, we had no idea they we’re going Murmur/Green front to back. Still living this concert 30+ years later.

How wonderful! In what moment did Atlanta fans realise that they were playing the full Murmur - Green albums? In these days is quite common announce a concert playing a full album (I love the idea). REM did it in 1989 by surprise...

I was there and I don't remember if they said - and I haven't watched this video yet. But I seem to remember realizing it about three songs in that they were doing Murmur front to back. Then Mike and the roadies came out and played, then Green, then a few hits. Was killer.
Edit: Watching it now. Yes, it just gradually dawned on us - don't think they ever said anything. You can tell by the crowd reaction to each song. This was a benefit, after tour over. I think in early days they always had a show at Fox around Thanksgiving.

Murmur & Green in their entirety? Absolutely amazing, so happy this is recorded. Would've been a bit upset not hearing anything in between but this sounds worth it!

Agreed that you'd be missing out on a good 4 albums but no one after this would hear so many Murmur songs live again. In hindsight after Out of time and Automatic changed everything, it would have been a blessing to have witnessed this last vestige of early R.E.M.

A Gibson guitar and Fender bass combo is something you would associate with Guns n' Roses or ACDC but R.E.M. managed to do their own thing with it on Green.
