Almost 31 years to the day I'm watching this. How we doin with that solar energy project? Such a time capsule, this show. We thought we'd defeated evil and were moving into an age of unparalleled peace and prosperity. Least we still got the music. Oh life!
Man, this is what TH-cam should be all about. The audio is phenomenal, far better than I've ever heard it before. So many terrific renditions of quality songs. Begin the Begin, Country Feedback and Me in Honey especially brilliant.
and you’re not kidding about Begin The Begin … is that, along with These Days - from the epic Life’s Rich Pageant, not STILL the One-Two Anthemic punch of the Thinking Person? “Let’s Begin Again … I am young despite the years, I have hope despite the times”. Thank you, Mike, Peter, Bill and Mike, and thank you, whoever caught this on tape.
How have I only just discovered this…!? I bought this on bootleg at a record fair about 25 yrs ago. Remember the guy saying you won’t believe the sound quality. Got home and it blew me away. So, so good. Now to see it and hear it even better than that CD is incredible. Man, REM were just so damn good. This has made my night.
The version they did at the MTV awards was even better. The session player they had in to play bass (Mike was on Hammond organ) really took the part to the next level.
Just stumbled upon this. I was listening to this in the background as I worked from home, and often thought I was listening to my Spotify REM playlist as these songs sound like as they were recorded. This is just fabulous and my gratitude to the person who recorded this. I miss this band.
It's so incredible to see this.. to actually hear just amazing they truly were this night. I lived in downtown Athens 2 years after this show, as constantly heard stories of this gig. Thank you for posting.. thank you R.E.M.
Thank you for posting this video. This band means a lot to me because they have an emotional attachment to a good friend of mine that committed suicide a few years. R.EM. music takes me back to when we were teenagers and life was good. :)
simply the best small club set I've ever seen...the audio and the light show...honed at giant venues all over the world and brought back to where it began. The greatest band in the world in front of 150 people...there is nothing better. What a rare Thanksgiving treat after digesting the audio of this show for the last couple weeks...we've always heard the guys were at their peak during Automatic...this proves it!
Wow!!! 40 Watt is still there but REM coming back is simply awesome!!! Going in April 2022 to see Drive By Truckers.. The history of this place along with the Georgia Theater is mesmerizing. I had seen REM at the Fox in Atlanta in 87 & is still one of the best performances I’ve ever seen…
Strange memory. In Baghdad circa 2006/07. The Fm would play the deepest cuts from the REM catalog. Songs only a real REM fan would love, like me. Not the hits, just the ones that hit deeply at the soul. I wonder where they found the spirit to do so while my side wished less than peace upon them. En shalla...en shallah.
You're so right, and thank you for calling this out. Bill is the master of tempo... so understated, so under the radar...he just wants to complement the melody-makers, which he does beautifully...the consummate team player. What incredible time Bill is blessed with.
My family gave me this cd show on my b-day in 19/11/96, four years since the show. Now still feeling gossebumps listening them. Miss them so much. Greetings from Argentina.
REM are one of those very few bands that play live and sound just like the studio versions of there songs, a truly great together band and I miss them so much . btw great audio quality.
Amazing to see this concert on TH-cam, the quality of the audio is amazing! I actually bought a bootleg CD of this concert in Rotterdam in 1993. When I went to Uni in the south of The Netherlands later that year and played it there, a student who was actually from Athens GA and a big REM fan, heard it for the first time and was really amazed and happy to receive a copy as well 🙂
The Audio on this is fantastic.! Wow what a find and in Athens out of all places (of course). Big Congrats to all and especially to whomever found this Diamond in the rough.
By this time these guys were selling out arenas across the country and they have the opportunity to return home and show everyone how huge they are but they don't. No big light show, no rock-star outfits, just heart-and-soul musicianship.

A very sincere thank you for posting this. I’ve read about this show, but to see and hear it is a real treat. Thank goodness the internet still has a use.
love your lyrics .you are the most honest musician .care about social issue. what i like the most is that it is not about "ME ME " only " and " love and other sexual related problems". Who cares ? No one owes anybody anything .We do it because we like to share something what other people can relate to it.
Heard all the song before from this concert but never seen this footage until now. Amazing. Radio Free Europe at the end wow. How can this sound so good and be 30yrs ago
Sept 2024. Just seeing this. I was there. That night Paul and I were at the Georgia bar, maybe The Globe but I doubt it. Paul was connected to the fan club. He mentioned there was a chance something was happening around the corner that night, but he wasn't sure. We finished our drinks and decided to go look, walked past the Georgia Theater, hooked a left on Washington, and saw at the bottom on the left something was indeed happening at 40 Watt even though the door light was off. It was some sort of production truck that got our attention as we walked closer (not the solar battery truck). Paul asked some guy at the door what was going on. He looked at us, maybe asked us a question, and just opened the door enough for us to slip in. We saw the entire concert. Our luck was insane. Later we bought the bootleg. I can't believe seeing this video now - the quality! Let's go Wyche Fowler.
I bought bootlegs of this on both CD and VHS in 93 or 94. If you would have told 20 year old me that I’d be able to watch this at any time of day on a 10” tablet computer thinner than a pencil while sitting in my backyard with zero wires involved….
as someone who spends a lot of time looking for- out of the norm bootlegs or any good sounding live shows.. someone mentioned it earlier the audio is just outstanding

They sound phenomenal here. The peak of their powers. I feel like just a couple of years later Michael’s voice was starting to strain more. In ‘92 it still sounded pure and effortless. The band are so tight too. What a show
Your so right. Not.sure I've ever heard Michael's voice so clear in a live performance. You can tell they had not toured in a bit. I saw them live on the Monster and New Adventures tours and you can tell the strain in Michael's voice. I just found this exceptional live performance!
And now that I listen closer, it seems like some songs are soundboard recordings (Me In Honey), while some are not (Drive #2)?? Eh, who cares, this show is great, carry on...

Their catalog has aged very well, and what a body of work it is.
Almost 31 years to the day I'm watching this. How we doin with that solar energy project? Such a time capsule, this show. We thought we'd defeated evil and were moving into an age of unparalleled peace and prosperity. Least we still got the music. Oh life!
2024 and REM is still more amazing than I ever heard before! ❤️
Absolute truth!
In 50 years when someone asks why REM, this is the answer. I'm a fan from early days and just watched this for the first time. Amazing sound quality.
Man, this is what TH-cam should be all about. The audio is phenomenal, far better than I've ever heard it before. So many terrific renditions of quality songs. Begin the Begin, Country Feedback and Me in Honey especially brilliant.
Country feedback so good
Me in honey Amazing!!!

2024! ❤❤❤
Nobody ever talks about me in honey - it’s ,,, honey, just saccharine perfect. That album for me was like a fork in the road
I have this band in my heart! forever and ever. LOVE!
REM at arguably the apogee of their career. Brilliant.
The best EH version ever sung live! I think his voice is just superb! Just amazing my fav band ever
Cannot believe how incredible Michael's vocal is.
THE best version of Drive. Cannot stop coming back to it. And then to be followed by that beautiful haunting version of Monty..perfection.
No no no. Best version??? Never never. Are you Crazy?
The version they did at the MTV awards was even better. The session player they had in to play bass (Mike was on Hammond organ) really took the part to the next level.
Can't agree. Doesn't have that guitar kick in the middle.
This will turn out to be the best band ever😊
The audio is so tight and impeccable it's mindblowing.
Just stumbled upon this. I was listening to this in the background as I worked from home, and often thought I was listening to my Spotify REM playlist as these songs sound like as they were recorded. This is just fabulous and my gratitude to the person who recorded this. I miss this band.
2022 and still rocking to REM
Yeah !!!!
It's a pity that they're not together any more, such a brilliant band.
Me too
Hell yeah!!
Twenty Twenty-Four
It's so incredible to see this.. to actually hear just amazing they truly were this night. I lived in downtown Athens 2 years after this show, as constantly heard stories of this gig. Thank you for posting.. thank you R.E.M.
the phrase "experience of a lifetime" is vastly overused, but not in this case...
I saw them at Tyrone's so many times
This is pretty spectacular. Where has this been hiding all these years?? Awesome!
Thank you for posting this video. This band means a lot to me because they have an emotional attachment to a good friend of mine that committed suicide a few years. R.EM. music takes me back to when we were teenagers and life was good. :)
such an awesome band, started small and got huge, incredible story, wish they were still playing
What a great set! I feel like they were so much better live with Bill Berry on drums and vocals.

Man ! What a rocking, groovy drummer Bill Berry is ! From the very first beat !
His energy is amazing! I just love watching him play.
It sounds to me like he's doubling the usual tempo on Begin the Begin. I may be imagining that, but he's locked in regardless.
You're so right, and thank you for calling this out. Bill is the master of tempo... so understated, so under the radar...he just wants to complement the melody-makers, which he does beautifully...the consummate team player. What incredible time Bill is blessed with.
Wow - what a great performance. Best live rendition of Fall On Me I have ever heard.
Mikes bk vocals are incredible
Simply stunning from start to finish ! R.E.M. at their most r'n'r !
Stipey isn't a singer he is a human instrument absolutely amazing ❤
Wow!!!!! This is the best live performance I've ever heard by a country mile!!!! Absolutely love it.
Thank you for sharing. The REM Crew have been the soundtrack to our life. We love you all! 🌈💜🏳️⚧️💗🙏🏽
The last time I saw them was on the Green tour in November 1989. Forgot how great they were live!

Drive is different here than the album.
@@rickcole349 it's defiantly rocked up somewhat
Naw, they very much do not sound like the studio recordings. And that is a conscious artistic decision.
Great audio quality.

it is almost too good. Early use of AI in 1992??
Love each and every song just like the first day, perhaps more. They have stayed true to themselves, and Michael's lyrics are timeless poetry.
Everbody hurts 100% this is better than the recorded or any other live version .
Epic show in an epic place. Just amazing. Thank you, R.E.M.
This is so fucking good...the audio is unreal! Michael Stipe at his best...his voice is so raw and so amazing here. So beautiful this gig;
This must be the best REM live set ever🙌
Everybody hurts 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Michael's vocal on Everybody Hurts is ab-sa-fu-ckin-lute-ly incredible. As is the whole performance.
this is too amazing to believe. The audio has been out there forever, but never knew there was video.
exactly my thoughts
I've had the audio but I'm so Happy to see the video as I was there a young college student in Athens a long time ago.
Had a bootleg of this gig i've listened over over and over on a tape… Amazing to see a video of these amazing versions 😍
Best live version of Everybody Hurts..Great concert..
REM artifact with brilliant soundboard & video restoration.
This version of "drive '' is soooo ......
Perfect.
so good quality of sound, can't stop hearing it.
By this time these guys were selling out arenas across the country and they have the opportunity to return home and show everyone how huge they are but they don't. No big light show, no rock-star outfits, just heart-and-soul musicianship.
Actually this show is a bit of an anomaly as they hadn't been touring for quite sometime when this went down.
Incarnation of beauty. Opening 'Drive' best version ever
video quality not so great but audio is excellent. thanks for posting. please post more stuff like this.
God, I'm glad I was in college in the 90's. It was wonderful.
TY REMHQ for putting this gem up x
Just proves how talented the band is. As to Artistic perfection as it gets.
Geezus, I appreciate the way Michael sounds live more than in the studio. Telltale sign of a great caroler.
