I just bought an AGS 001, a bit of wear and tear. Also got Pokemon Fire Red, Minish Cap, Golden Sun and Super Mario Advance 3. I am loving it. I do like the form factor of the original GBA and plan to buy a beat up one to mod and put a ips screen in and off course a new shell and all.
I have a Mario special edition from way back in the day, mine had an adjustable lighting switch on the side of the lid, it's very beat up and well loved but still works!
I think it would be cool if you review the Google Pixel 6 non Pro because I want to know your thoughts on why it is the best value smartphone right now.
Great! Great! Review! Thanks for introducing us to that company, unfortunately their prices are out of my price range at this time. (I can afford one, but i cant afford to spend my money like that) If i was making twice what i make right now i could allow myself to buy one. Or if i was a hardcore gamet, but i know i wont play it enough to justify the price
I remember when I bought an SP I was in a thrift store and noticed a fiery red SP sitting in a conspicuous box and when I had the employee take it out to get a closer look and to my shock it was a practically new red SP with 2 games that both had the original boxes and a bunch of accessories that would cost an extra 30 or maybe 40 buck online to be authentic needless to say that was a great day thankfully I had a SP battery at home from an old one I used to own cause sadly because the SP I bought was never used the battery ran out with time rather then use so I had to replace it
My brother got me one of these for Christmas last year, lovin it. I had the og gameboy but the screen gave out one day just outta nowhere. Currently playing yellow on the sp, feels great to come back to it.
I grew up in the Wii generation and a live near a retro game store and I saw a SP in its original box for $50 (half the price of a used one from GameStop) I didn’t have enough cash on me but I’m hopefully getting one soon. (Edit) I got it and it is my baby. It’s the best little thing to bring in the car when some elts is driving.
I think if you really enjoy retrogame, you must do it the rigth way... forget emulators, and try to buy the physical product, because they were so well engeenired and touthg, and they still hold all their fashion and magic!
I recently bought a gameboy advance sp and other consoles because as a child I never had any - my dad was a bit stingy. Thanks to this I just found out the one I bought is the Ags 101 model !!!
I bought an old classic AGS 001 for the first time a few weeks ago and its absolutely lovely to lay in bed, play and disconnect from social media for a few hours
About 2 years ago I went to a goodwill and found a mint condition red gameboy advance SP 2 games and a handful of accesories for literally only 15 bucks, I did have to buy a new battery though since it wasn't turned on once for who knows how long but I love this little system
Omg Pokémon Emerald😱 one of my favorite games!! Awesome video Mark! I still use my gameboy advance sp 18 too and you already know what game I'm playing, Pokémon!
For some reason, I think this is cooler than the analogue pocket. If they made a foldable version of the analogue pocket, then I would probably go for that. I would also hope that the analogue pocket buttons feel as satisfying as a Gameboy advance sp.
@@yardeeknowwhoitis8144 Over the last few days, I actually agree with you. Yesterday, I cancelled my analogue pocket, and reached out to the mod shop so they can also add a headphone jack. They gladly did for an additional $25. The Analogue Pocket is definitely a nice piece of tech, and I will eventually get one, as it has so many other features. However, I just don't think I'll long for it after using my modded SP. The SP's form factor is my nostalgia trip, and I agree, the button feel is an important factor for me. The SP is where I spent most of my gameboy days, and I want a modern experience of that.
@@JerryGonzalez Yeah. The analogue pocket can run game boy games but I doubt it would give the same experience as my ags-001 I’m currently using. Also, how did you reach out to Modernmods for the add on of the 3.5 mm headphone Jack? I would also love to do that.
@@yardeeknowwhoitis8144 Exactly. The form factor is the magic sauce for me. I just messaged their etsy shop account asking them to add the headphone jack to my open order. They gave me the option of headphone jack, or adding bluetooth for $25 (but this would add significant thickness to the device). I went with the headphone jack.
My older sister had a silver SP when we were kids, and all I had was a bluish Gameboy Color. I loved the Color, but that SP always looked like the coolest thing ever, and I remember dreaming of getting one someday. But that's kinda the sad thing about technology; as time went on the DS came out, and I was able to get one, but I soon forgot about the Gameboy. Fast forward to today, and none of that cool tech from back then is relevant anymore. But seeing how well the SP still holds up makes it tempting to get one, like I used to dream about. The DS and its successors didn't really render the SP completely obsolete, since there's so much it can do that they can't (if anything, it was the SP that made any other Gameboys obsolete). And seeing how you can get a custom made SP brand new, for a pretty competitive price, that improves the console a bit so that it can do what it does best is really neat.
i bought and traded in so many. A few years ago a guy from work gave me his because his dog literally chewed it up. it was pretty bad. i got a new shell on ebay and swapped it out and it’s been working great.
My first introduction to videogames on my 9th birthday, along with a copy of Super Mario 3. Then eventually Van Helsing, Sonic Advance 3, Splinter Cell and a GTA clone called Payback.
I saw that Pokemon emerald cartridge in that close up. Good pick I loved secret bases and Torchic is still my spirit Pokemon 😂 named my first Rayquaza Raydragon and didn't stay I remember why. I didn't know how to pronounce Ray QUAZA, Even though I now know how to I still treasure that Rayquaza and have em to this day.
I still have mine from years ago. It’s black and has two light options. A dimmer light and a brighter light. The brighter one would eat the charge faster.
Im 18 and actually just bought and recieved my first gameboy and its an SP. I did get a custom made from boysmods. With an ips display. It took my out about 170 with a new battery
I've been through several GBA SPs over the years. My current one is a lime green AGS-001. I'm hoping to get a 101 model in the distant future but for now, I also play my GBA games on my DS lite.
I found my gameboy advance sp in a box as I was unpacking in my new house last week. I haven't touched the thing in 15 years. Flipped the power switch and it turned on. This thing can hold a freaking charge.
I'm getting ready to review one of your custom gaming systems but when I click the link below, I'm guessing that was your order site , it says that you are no longer using that web site. Could you please give me a link to your updated site, where people can place new orders? Noah has had nothing but good to say about his system too. So I am looking forward to making this video.
For me, personally... I'd say yes AND no to the question "Is a GBA SP worth buying now?" On one hand, it's still a good handheld with a lot of good games. And honestly, the consoles aren't THAT expensive either. And you can have fun customizing one if you get one that's beat up, or you just want a new shell and button colors. And if you can solder and stuff, you can really go ham with a rechargeable USB-C-powered battery, a better screen, better speaker, built in headphone jack, and whatever else. Hell, I've seen 'em with LEDs in 'em. On the other hand, you'd buy a GBA SP, and then you'd also have to either spend $60+ on a flash cart, or even more buying actual GBA cartridges. On top of that, I wouldn't even bother getting one unless you can find an AGS 101, unless you wanna spend even MORE money customizing it and adding a new ips screen. Then there's also something to consider. There's SO many devices nowadays that'll let you play GBA games. I mean, any modern phone really, should be able to play them. Xbox has developer mode with Retroarch that can play them. And then there's the absolute metric ton of emulation handhelds like the Miyoo Mini Plus, the Retroids, Anbernics, PowKiddy, whatever else. Plus the more expensive stuff like a Steam Deck or Rog Ally. And emulation gets you benefits, like save states to pause the game anywhere you want, cheats, shaders, image borders, customizable controls, turbo buttons, and whatever else. AND you wouldn't be limited to GB/GBC/GBA. With something like the Miyoo, it can play most things up to PS1. Retroids can do up to at least Dreamcast and some PSP and DS too. And something like the Rog Ally can even do all the way up to Switch. So buying a GBA SP, when there's emulation handhelds around for cheap, just seems like it's limiting yourself for no reason. I mean, you can get an Anbernic RG35XX for like $60. Or a Miyoo Mini Plus for $70, and be able to play up to PS1 with no issues. __________ For context, I have a GBASP that I re-shelled, and tossed a bigger battery into, and I have a a GB/GBC Flash Cart and a GBA Flash Cart. I'm also old enough that I grew up playing the original DMG, GBC, GBA, and even Game Gear. But, honestly, I find myself using emulation handhelds way more often just out of convenience. I have all my old 8 and 16 bit games on one small handheld, along with some PS1, Dreamcast, N64, and a ton of Arcade games. I have shaders/filters and custom made image borders for a bunch of the different consoles. I have rom hacks for days, ranging from minor stuff like removing the blue glow around your character in that one Castlevania game, or adjusting the colors and removing the dumb voices in the GBA Mario SNES ports, to english translations of Japanese-exclusive games (like mother 3 or Live-A-Live), or minor adjustments to game balancing and stuff, to completely new versions of games, like Pokemon Unbound that's an entirely new Pokemon game, or Mario World hacks that pretty much just feel like a sequel with all new levels and graphics. I just feel like, as nice as the GBA is, especially an AGS 101, there's better alternatives nowadays for the same price, or less.
Dude thanks for the video. This has been one of my best video games. Can you do a video with the top best games to play on the game boy advance sp and where to get them!!..
You can get just as good mods if you ask around the gameboy subreddit. I got a 2nd sp with a new naruto shell and ips screen made for me for onlt 80 usd. Wouldnt of been much more either if i opted in for usb c
I picked up a very beat up AGS-101 the screen and motherboard were in perfect condition so I just replaced the shell and screen lens. The triggers stopped working but I'm fixing them in the future. Perfect gameboy system. Backwards compatibility and perfect size. In my opinion the AgS-101 screen looks better than an IPS panel. Way more originality and smoothness cause of the motion blur. I heard ITA panels are similar but don't need to be replaced yet.
Actually you can charge the Gameboy Advance Sp and use the plug in for the headphones, because the sp has two charger ports. One for a sp charger and one for a ga charger.
i will forever be sad that my pearl blue SP and pokémon sapphire game were stolen from me in middle school.. def one of my favorite handhelds i’ve ever owned
I'm still going to watch the video, but as a video game enthusiast,, I would say YES!!! Especially if you don't currently have one, it's a nice shelf item at the very least. The mods they have for it are pretty neat too.
I was 9-ish or 10-ish when my late grandpapa got this for my birthday in 03. Cherished it and showed it off to friends forever. After my family moved in 06 it just got lost I have no idea where it is now I'm so sad.
When I was a kid I had a pink ags001 but my brother bent the screen back and snapped it in half. I’ve recently bought the same model and some of the old games I had and I can’t wait for the nostalgia
if you don't mind doing the work your self get the cheeper one and mod the system to your liking there are plenty of how to videos here on youtube to walk you through the whole thing. I'm personally going to start eay with learning soldering by changing batteries on a few carts I have with dead batteries in them. feels like a good starting point.
It still beats the Gameboy Color that used AA batteries as only had a couple hours of use. To me it's hard to beat playing Ocarina of Time in a New 2DS/3DS XL device. Although, to be fair going from the Gameboy Color to a New 2DS XL is a continental jump which I don't doubt makes my experience with it much better than if I came from the SP or a DS.
I use a 3DS to emulate Game Boy/GBC/GBA games. It fixes all the GBA's problems, such as cartridges sticking out (there aren't any), no headphone jack, a more comfortable design, and a good screen. It plays like an actual GBA, as there isn't any of the bullshit from the other VCs like restore points.
I don't need to buy an SP in 2021 because I still have mine that I got for Christmas in 2003, haha. I was playing Pokémon on it just a few months ago. What I'm shocked by is how the rechargeable battery is still doing fine.
I never owned a Gameboy Advance SP I had the original advance back then and only got an SP a few years ago while I admit the SP's screen isn't the best I don't think it matters that much all the SP's I own are the old AGS-001 but I do plan to replace the shells to make them look new
If the GBA SP is worth buying, I want it to be the AGS-101 backlit GBA SP model, in a good, working condition. The frontlit launch models of the GBA SP sucked.
I remember i traded my silver Batman one or whatever it was called to get the blue sp.. I don’t recall having an issue with the lighting back then but nowadays it’s dam near unplayable.. So not sure whether it’s me or the system! However playing GBA on DS Lite seems mostly fine
Since the og gba looks and holds the best, imo a og gba with ips-v2 screen mod is the way to go. You can buy complete kits including a new shell and all the tools.
It's always a bit tricky saying it's 'worth' buying a multi decade old device for prices that somtimes reach toward retail release prices and for qualities usually lower than that. Especially when you can play the exact same games on a different device (Nintendo DS) that can also play its own generation of games and is more widely availabe at lower prices. Strangely though, the GBA games feel so much better to play on the SP. It's hard to say what quality makes it like that, but somehow that makes it worth the money if you can afford it.
I recently bought an AGS 001, put in a new shell and new buttons, and added an IPS display and usb C recharging for a new lipo battery. I've been having an absolute field day with it, I've got a bunch of games already and I'm currently playing mario and luigi superstar saga.

Great! Great! Review! Thanks for introducing us to that company, unfortunately their prices are out of my price range at this time. (I can afford one, but i cant afford to spend my money like that)
If i was making twice what i make right now i could allow myself to buy one.
I just got one and I love it! I collect games and systems, and I have to say, this is the best Gameboy
I recently bought a gameboy advance sp and other consoles because as a child I never had any - my dad was a bit stingy. Thanks to this I just found out the one I bought is the Ags 101 model !!!
I still have mine. My parents got it for me for my birthday all the way back in 2003 and I was SOOOOO excited when I got it! It was my second Gameboy.
I bought one of the ultimate SPs from that shop thanks to you. I can’t wait to receive it! Hoping this holds me over until my Analogue Pocket arrives.
What’re your thoughts on the modded console? Thinking about purchasing one but haven’t come across reviews of it. Hope to hear from you soon!
Where did you manage to find GBA games? I'm having a hard time finding them.
Its so simple yet so complex
Anytime I saw someone with one of these during the prime years of the SP I always thought they had a very premium handheld.
Just found my original, battery still holding on like a champ! Can't wait to get back into it.
I still have my AGS-001 since for-flipping-ever! I just recently reshelled and upgraded it. Complete with USB-C charging.
What happened to his company they're no longer on Etsy?
Bankrupt probably
Darn, just watched this video and wanted to look into getting a modded SP. Anyone have suggestions on where to look?
@@royalrumble97 I'm wondering the same thing man
I just bought one a few weeks ago and totally happy I did. I feel like the price of these will go way up in the near future
I've been through several GBA SPs over the years. My current one is a lime green AGS-001. I'm hoping to get a 101 model in the distant future but for now, I also play my GBA games on my DS lite.
Check flea markets. Today I found a Pink Pearl 101 at the Saint Eustache Flea Market north of Montreal.
Finding this bang on when I’ve been musing over picking up an sp was great. I loved my sp, such a great form factor
I have my old AGS-101 and reshelled/added a new battery, but my old battery still worked too after 21 years!!
I used to have a gameboy too when I was little
For me, personally... I'd say yes AND no to the question "Is a GBA SP worth buying now?"
On one hand, it's still a good handheld with a lot of good games.
__________
For context, I have a GBASP that I re-shelled, and tossed a bigger battery into, and I have a a GB/GBC Flash Cart and a GBA Flash Cart.
I tried to go on the website, but it says they are not selling them anymore. How can I get hold of a custom made??
Has anyone bought from modernmods just bought a gba sp from them…curious to see what the process was like??
Took about 5 months for me to get mine but not sure, everyone has different experiences
@@johnenriquez6306yeah that seems to be the consensus. Are you happy with the product though?
Dude thanks for the video. This has been one of my best video games. Can you do a video with the top best games to play on the game boy advance sp and where to get them!!..
I just got a modded one from modern mods, it is absolutely fantastic and I would recommend it
How long did it take for you to recieve it.
@@johnenriquez6306 I ordered on July 30th and got it around august 16th
@@johnenriquez6306 it was supposed to come by august 4th btw
@@Ice_Animates yeah because I ordered mine a month ago and I’m still waiting so, who knows lol
Do you have a video review of your modded console?
The SP charger can be used for the Nintendo DS. (Meaning Dual Screen)
You can get just as good mods if you ask around the gameboy subreddit. I got a 2nd sp with a new naruto shell and ips screen made for me for onlt 80 usd. Wouldnt of been much more either if i opted in for usb c
Oh God this came out 18 years ago... I've never felt so old.
Says they’re currently not selling on Etsy?
Yeah same here
I picked up a very beat up AGS-101 the screen and motherboard were in perfect condition so I just replaced the shell and screen lens.
I think my 5 year old son would love one of these!
Actually you can charge the Gameboy Advance Sp and use the plug in for the headphones, because the sp has two charger ports. One for a sp charger and one for a ga charger.
I still have my AGS 101 from when I got it on Christmas years back. All scratched up but just ordered a charger so we’ll see if it works.
Nomad and GBA are my 2 fav systems
i will forever be sad that my pearl blue SP and pokémon sapphire game were stolen from me in middle school.. def one of my favorite handhelds i’ve ever owned
I'm still going to watch the video, but as a video game enthusiast,, I would say YES!!! Especially if you don't currently have one, it's a nice shelf item at the very least. The mods they have for it are pretty neat too.
I love mine so much.
Loved this retro video!
I was 9-ish or 10-ish when my late grandpapa got this for my birthday in 03. Cherished it and showed it off to friends forever. After my family moved in 06 it just got lost I have no idea where it is now I'm so sad.
That triple white GBA SP looks so good!
My dad bought me a 001 when they were new 20 years ago as well as a copy of pokemon sapphire, they still work, with all the original parts.
When I was a kid I had a pink ags001 but my brother bent the screen back and snapped it in half. I’ve recently bought the same model and some of the old games I had and I can’t wait for the nostalgia
Been binge watching gba videos while I wait for my Analogue Pocket to arrive. Great video!
I just bought a ags 001 and plan on modifying it myself as a project
if you don't mind doing the work your self get the cheeper one and mod the system to your liking there are plenty of how to videos here on youtube to walk you through the whole thing. I'm personally going to start eay with learning soldering by changing batteries on a few carts I have with dead batteries in them. feels like a good starting point.
I don't have the Game Boy Advance SP yet, but I want to buy it one day, then add it to my Game Boy family line. I've waited about 21 years for this...
Great Video! Been looking to pick one up, and this video helps a lot. The prices of the games are kind of nuts though.
I love this thing!
Honestly, Yes. I haven't gotten my last piece but I know I will love it and it will be great to carry with while I'm flying and waiting etc.
I don't need to buy an SP in 2021 because I still have mine that I got for Christmas in 2003, haha.
I was playing Pokémon on it just a few months ago.
What I'm shocked by is how the rechargeable battery is still doing fine.
Same, actually.
Unfortunate that modern mods etsy shop is not up anymore
Where is modern mods now? Their not on etsy anymore
I dont know. I hope he replies to this
I never owned a Gameboy Advance SP I had the original advance back then and only got an SP a few years ago while I admit the SP's screen isn't the best I don't think it matters that much all the SP's I own are the old AGS-001 but I do plan to replace the shells to make them look new
Only thing missing is a flash cart unless u wanna carry all those cartridges.
I still have my blue one. The only problem is the left trigger doesn't work as the result of hundreds of hours of Mario.
Loved the video ! will you do a pixel 5 tech rewind ?
Does anybody know what charger it uses? Im tryna boot mine back up after this
Gameboy SP charger.
