Prince Andrew, Royal Money Scandals & our right to know! | EP. 60 | Scandal Mongers Podcast

  • According to the court reports last week, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, pocketed more than £1 million from an allegedly corrupt financier acting on behalf of a Turkish millionaire. And nobody can say why. It’s one of many obscure stories of cash flowing into royal coffers that our Andrew - Lownie - has been trying to investigate for years.
In this special episode Andrew shares some of his theories about what has been happening here - and asks questions about Prince Andrew’s time as a ’trade envoy’. Just who was he representing on these expensive foreign trips? His country or his own family? We also discuss the wider issues of royal finance and the public’s right to know about it.
Andrew has spent many frustrating months battling for access to royal and other official documents about Prince Andrew and others, but Britain’s Freedom of Information system does not appear to be very helpful.
Later in the episode we talk to the guru of freedom of information (in Britain and elsewhere) about all this - ex BBC journalist Martin Rosenbaum.
Martin Rosenbaum has also written a guide book to your rights to information

‘Sleezy bad apples’ - Andrew you are such a gent in the way you describe the Royals who don’t deserve our respect. There is often a lot of public affection for Fergie, and especially now that she has well publicised health issues, yet the scandals associated with her are too many to count. After you had Norman Baker on I read his book and I have to say it altered my view of the Royal family. I already knew that Andrew and Fergie are masters at lining their own nests and training their daughters to do the same (Norman Baker referred to 18 holidays one year for those girls 😲), but I was stunned by the stinginess of the other royals and reluctance to be open (and grateful) for the wealth bestowed on them by the country.
I’m really looking forward to your book on the Yorks Andrew and good on you for being so quietly determined to see it through.

So they bring in BILLIONS of pounds each year for the country. They are given 25% of that, including the £1.50 (I am being generous) that the people pay to sustain them and their employees. Yet the country wants to know how that money is spent (fair enough) and also people want to know what they do with their savings and what kind of investments they have? In what world do people have to tell how much personal wealth you have to an employer? Make it make sense. If you don’t want to pay for a monarchy, that’s fine, but they are not your property. If you didn’t have them, no one would care about the U.K.

Long May this channel Reign!!! How sad we live in a a society where the poorest of the poor are using food banks and having to provide evidence of low income, with the food banks mainly stocked by donations from shoppers. How sad the worker loses their job through redundancy and for income support have to provide evidentiary documents of savings and redundancy pay, and refusal to declare will result in denial of benefit… benefit what an insulting word… where is the benefit in having to apply for income support when the royals can refuse to declare… do the royals work so hard they earn more money than our coal miners, police service, fire service, teachers and nhs service… come on royals shame the devil and tell the truth… thank you Andrew for continuing to call for transparency

imo both of them are likely responsible for spreading malicious or divisive social media or press narratives about the KC3 or the Wales family, particularly narratives that seek to incite conflict & division within the RF between KC3, Princess Anne & Prince Edward. Like what purpose did it serve for the Daily Fail, particular journos or Royal commentators to make claims that post accession KC3 didn't want to gift the Duke of Edinburgh title to Prince Edward? Which eventually proved to be wrong? And how Duke EggYork somehow gets himself 'papped' within the vast Windsor or Balmoral estate either horseriding or fox hunting in the company of his siblings? Like how on earth would a Daily Fail photog know where to find him & Princess Anne or Prince Edward within those vast estates to get a clear shot of them?

🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 I’ve only just fallen over this episode and I thought it was brilliant. Andrew, you remind me so much of a friend, who is no longer with us, that was so much like you. He loved to deep dive into things and he did family trees which gave him the opportunity to do that. Listening to this podcast brought back the memory of him saying that Queen Victoria, was left money in a Will that he was doing the family tree for. He said that the relative had left the money to Queen Victoria, thinking that she was in need. The family did try to get the money back but was met with total silence. I wonder how often the royal family are left money in Wills that you don’t hear of. Just love your channel xx

Podcast request. Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. Monies are still coming in thru donations from Wills. Where are they going? The fund was closed, diverted to KP management and said to be channeled in old charities related to Chas and Diana. Eventually funds split between Will & Harry charities but Sussex charity closed when H left the UK. Where do the funds go now? The Equerry at the time the Memorial Fund closed, seemed dissatisfied as if he was busy not saying something. I don't know whether there's anything in this but it's always puzzled me.

Very interesting, especially as institutional obfuscation is widely practised. I am also a monarchist and believe there should be less protection of information in particular about their finances. Until high profile representatives of the "1%" relinquish large chunks of private wealth to aid and support vast areas of need there will be little so-called civil society. Revolution is a real thing. The internet creates bot reality and illusion around the freedom of information. Why should any of the spendthrift Yorks be protected? And, my personal bugbear, why should the public be expected to fund any part of the renovation of Buckingham Palace? I hold out hope that Prince William will manage things with more transparency as well as a stronger sense of the greater good.

If I might be allowed to go slightly off topic, I have just started reading Prince Harry's controversial tell all memoir Spare. The following words are some of the most unsettling I've read in autobiography / memoir. Not for the faint hearted.
' Two years older than me, Willy [ William Windsor ] was the Heir, whereas I [ Henry Windsor ] was the Spare. This wasn't merely how the press referred to us - though it was definitely used. This was shorthand often used by Pa [ Charles Windsor - King ] , Mummy [ late Mother, Princess Diana ] and Grandpa [ paternal Grandfather, late Prince Phillip] . And even Granny [ paternal Grandmother, late Queen Elizabeth II ]. The Heir and the Spare - there was no judgement about it , but also no ambiguity. I was the shadow, the support, the Plan B. I was summoned to provide back up, distraction, diversion and , if necessary, a spare part. Blood transfusion. Speck of bone marrow. This was all made explicitly clear to me from the start of life's journey and regularly reinforced thereafter. I was twenty the first time I heard the story of what Pa allegedly said to Mummy the day of my birth : ' Wonderful ! Now you've given me an Heir and a Spare - my work is done. A joke. Presumably. On the other hand , minutes after delivering this bit of high comedy Pa, was said to have gone off to meet his girlfriend [ presumably Camilla ]. So. Many a true word spoken in jest . ' (p. 14 - 15 ).
    Gee whizz.
Is this the root of the dysfunctional behaviour of the young Prince ? Might be so.
( Must add, the Prince's knowledge of the works of Shakespeare is impressive as indeed is his knowledge of modern and contemporary English history)

In my 🇺🇸 unroyalist view, the Windsors have generationally been an eclectic mix of odd; eccentric; entitled; troubled; downright awful; with the occasional bright spot (George VI, QE II, Catherine, William). Now Harry thinks it's his job to dismantle our First Amendment, and we'd rather he stay in his lane, preferably a lane in some other country. I suppose I understand the veneration they get from the UK public in terms of tradition and history, but surely they should be viewed objectively as individuals and assessed according to individual merits or lack thereof.
