Very interesting interview. In the 1950s my uncle was studying languages at Cambridge and he has picked to attend a rather isolated school to learn Russian, he met Alan Bennet there, the popular play-write. They were told it was to help with UK security during the Cold War. After learning Russian neither of them went onto the next stage, which my uncle joked later was the “James Bond” training! Alan Bennett mentions this time in his life in the The Lady In The Van play/movie. My uncle went on to become a languages teacher and ended up teaching a young Paul McCartney! Plus his knowledge of Russian allowed him to visit Moscow several times and be able to communicate easily. He had no regrets about not becoming a James Bond!
Brilliant Shauna, Andrew is a perfect guest. Thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. Your final question about Harry really made me wonder, I would say he was extremely vulnerable.
Well, this was fascinating. I’m glad you’re branching out into these type of interviews, Shauna. And I truly appreciate the amount of research you undertake before your interviews. Well done! 🙌
OMG Shauna! So happy you had Mr. Lownie back! I'm a huge fan (of both of you 🤗). Stalin's Englishman, like all of Mr. Lownie's works, is a captivating book and if you haven't read it, you should! IMHO, Mr. Lownie is one of the best investigative authors of our time and I am very much looking forward to his upcoming book on the Yorks as he's about the only person that can be trusted to not sugarcoat both Andrew and Fergie's questionable (if not illegal) back room deals and other shady activities. I know a few people that were on the ground when Pan Am flight 103 exploded overhead who have never recovered from the ordeal. They especially want (and deserve) answers about Andrew's Libyan BFF's and how much he received to lobby for the bombers early prison release and I hope they finally get some relief with whatever new information Mr. Lownie is able to bring to light. 💜
Just in case anyone isn't aware, Pan Am flight 103 is better known as the Lockerbie Bombing. Basically, it was Scotland's 9/11 in a way and Libya was behind the mid-flight explosion that killed 270 people total days before Christmas in 1988. 11 of those deaths were people hit by debris on the ground but just about everyone in the community was traumatized since body parts were being found everywhere. It was horrendous.
@@kiernan415 Somehow I knew that "Pan Am flight 103" was over Lockerbie, but I did NOT know that Andrew had some part to play in lobbying for early release for the bombers... Shocking, and indefensible if true... Thank you

I found it in an article from The Sun titled "What did Andrew say on Lockerbie Pan Am Flight 103 Bombing?" posted April 7, 2022 "In December 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up by terrorists. The bomb tragically killed 243 passengers and 16 crew on the aircraft, as well as 11 people on the ground when a large section of the plane crashed into a residential street. The Queen sent her son, Prince Andrew to Lockerbie, as she feared her presence would distract everyone from the disaster. My two favourites! Favourite TH-camr and favourite author. Excellent questions Shauna coupled with fascinating answers. I could have watched you both for many hours.
How many books has Andrew Lownie written? Take that, multiply by two parts, and add several. Thats how many times he should be back on your show. His stories are sooo interesting and you bring them out with insightful and meaningful questions. Really loving these!
Excellent discussion of modern political/cultural manipulation through social media, bots, technology etc. The attacks on western politics/culture etc are being played out on the world stage in real time. Great interview Shauna; Andrew Lownie is such an interesting author.
Well that was very interesting ! I've watched a few documentaries on the Cambridge Five, but this chat humanised them in a way I hadn't thought of. Thank you.
Shauna, Thank you so much for such an interesting interview! You are not going to believe this, but I went into my local bookstore the other day to find something new to read but all I found that piqued my interest were books I already had. Disappointed, I went back downstairs to leave and then my eye caught a book on display about Kim Philby! I shouted inside my head, "Thats it" Spy books, that is what I am in just the mood to read. I will definitely go find Mr. Lownie's book now and read it with relish! Spy stories are slightly scary and always are a good tale.
‘If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friends, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country. Such a choice may scandalise the modern reader, and he may stretch out his patriotic hand to the telephone at once and ring up the police. It would not have shocked Dante, though. Dante places Brutus and Cassius in the lowest circle of Hell because they had chosen to betray their friend Julius Caesar rather than their country Rome.’ [E. M. Forster, 1938]
This is fascinating... People like Andrew Lownie are fascinating in THEIR fascination with these issues. We certainly need him. I read In the Enemy's House by Howard Blum about the beginnings of the Intelligence/spy institution in the US (latecomers to the game!!). Fascinating. I would love to hear how much the Brits and Americans worked together on it. I know there was some cooperation...

Great interview,Shauna. Have loved spy stories and political thrillers, ever since my then teenage son, who was not a keen reader at that time, introduced me to ‘ The Hunt for Red October’ and I became hooked. Am anxiously waiting for the new Daniel Silva book to be downloaded to my I-pad, due tomorrow. Mr Silva, if I remember correctly, wove some of The Filby and Burgess story into one of his more recent novels, can’t remember the name off hand, but it was very skilfully done. He always weaves the plots to include British interests with American politics, as well as Israeli and Russian spies.Given what is happening now, I am interested in how this new book will resonate. Off subject, I wish you could interview the little cane toad Henry. You would cetainly not go soft and let him off the hook, by not insisting on answers to your questions. What an interesting discussion about Guy and MacLean. It certainly activated memories of my childhood and conversations between my parents. I am in my 80s and come from a long line of military ancestors.. I was brought up in several countries on RAF bases. From 1948 till 1952 we lived in Germany when we returned to the UK. Gosh! What an amazing man x so admirable for the quest for the truth x I could listen to Andrew endlessly!
Thank you Shauna for bringing us this opportunity to hear this discussion ❤ ed it!
Thanks for watching 😊💕
Two of my most favourite TH-camrs ever! Thank you. So enjoy your chats.
You had me at Andrew Lownie. He’s a thoroughly researched & engaging writer. ⭐️
My two favourites! Favourite TH-camr and favourite author. Excellent questions Shauna coupled with fascinating answers. I could have watched you both for many hours.
Yay, thank you!
What a completely fascinating man Mr.Lowney is. Thank you for yet another wonderful vlog! Superb! Cheers and sip from Canada 🇨🇦
Sorry Mr Lownie..I misspelled your name...mea culpa
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow your subscribers have rocketed recently
Well deserved xx
Thank you!! 😊
Brilliant Shauna! You ask questions that others don't ask!
How many books has Andrew Lownie written? Take that, multiply by two parts, and add several. Thats how many times he should be back on your show. His stories are sooo interesting and you bring them out with insightful and meaningful questions. Really loving these!
Yes he is always fascinating to talk to!
Shauna a great interview with Andrew Lownie; I enjoyed the preious one as well. You ask excellent questions, on a foundation on doing your homework.
I sure did! 😂
Excellent discussion of modern political/cultural manipulation through social media, bots, technology etc. The attacks on western politics/culture etc are being played out on the world stage in real time. Great interview Shauna; Andrew Lownie is such an interesting author.
I agree!
@@thevintagereadthe Olympic opening ceremony seems like a incredibly blatant disparaging of The last Supper with gender politics.
Oh Shauna this was fascinating better than any Hollywood spy movie. Thank you to yourself and Mr.Lownie ❤🙏.
😊🙌💕
Well done Shauna and Andrew! Makes one think .........
Fascinating...watching UP on missed vids...superb interview as always
Much appreciated
What a fascinating interview….thoroughly enjoyed it xx
Well done Shauna you could teach a lot of msm how to do researched & informative interviews 👏😍
That’s lovely of you, thanks!
Fascinating interview.
😊💕
Love Andrew ! Thank you for that Interview❤
Thanks!
Thank you! 😊💗
They are!
Shauna, that color makes you look radiant. Looking especially pretty today. Marvelous to see Andrew Lownie on your channel again. Good on you!
Yes! Thank you!
Absolutely fascinating & terrifying at the same time. Very, very thought provoking.
It's so difficult to judge when things were so very different back then.
Excellent as always. Thank you
Wonderful chat so informative thank you both ❤️❤️❤️🏴
Glad you enjoyed it
This is fascinating...
Shauna just enjoyed your interview with Andrew Lownie so much. He’s so interesting, he knows his subject, admire his in-depth research. More of this type of interviewee. Thank you❤️
Wonderful!
Finding truth and justice is so important. They are trying to silence the rights to free speech and the heroes trying to protect these rights are awesome. Thank you Shauna and Andrew for another great interview =).
Our pleasure however my name is Shauna 😂
@@thevintageread I am sooo sorry, Shauna, I do know that! I watch all of your videos. Another channel I watch her name is Paula and she is from South Africa (not Paula M), and I had watched two of her videos before yours. I apologize and I love all of your videos very much--interviews, book reviews, general royal chats, snarky snippets and chats before bed (which I always sip to as well). You are definitely one of my favourite ladies on yt, I feel so terrible.
P.S. Dear Shauna-we have 5 children (3 girls, 2 boys, the two youngest girls are still at home, 23+26) and I told them about what I did and they said "Mom, you should have told her that for years you have often called us the wrong names" calling them each others names. I just had to add that to tell you, again, I am sorry.
It doesn’t matter and thanks for your lovely comment! 😂💕
Another excellent interview -- you have the brilliant knack of asking well considered questions and then listening quietly to the answers. I enjoyed the Burgess book but it did leave me feeling sad for a man who, IMO, became crushed under the weight of his own bad decisions. Currently sitting with AL's Buchan book on my desk to read next after Ask Not.
You have a lot of reading to do!
@@thevintageread Always!
I love your interview style and fineness . You ask such thoughtful questions. I’d rather listen to you than many others within this profession. ❤
Thanks for listening
Thank you, Shauna, for this excellent interview! I really appreciate your educated, insightful observations and inquiries. Truly absorbing. Aotearoa New Zealand.
Great interview! Thank you very much! Your last question was most thought provoking.
❤ That was brilliant absolutely brilliant and when you think about so much of Russian owned property, especially in London, it looks so realistic that they are actually keeping eyes and ears open ❤
My favourite Andrew bio.
Shauna, that was a riveting interview with Andrew. Thank you both, so much. Now I must buy his book! Please can we have Andrew on again?
He’s a bit busy writing but he has an open invite!
@@thevintageread I'm having another listen, just to make sure I didn't miss anything. Credits to you for a well researched and prepared interview and not hurrying your guests. Cheers, Shauna!
Thank you!
Great and interesting interview Shauna.
💕🙌
Thanx Shauna, thoroughly enjoyed another visit with your special guest Andrew. I have always loved Spy yarns since forever. 📖
Yay, thank you!
What an amazing interview! Your questions are excellent! You have great insight and research those you interview. Its obvious people feel comfortable with you...evidenced by their willingness to share information. Thank you!
Thank you, another great collab.
A big embarrassing mess for all concerned. Appropriate that multiple uses of a one time pad led to the discovery. Clue's in the name.
Difficult to gauge the damage done. When you consider how Stalin ignored all the signs and various strong pieces of intelligence indicating Barbarossa, it helps demonstrate why the intelligence was dealt with indifferently as was found in the Russian archives.
So enjoyed this episode, it was right up my street. Am so glad you mentioned Harry because he is ripe for the picking.
I SO enjoy your interviews, Shauna, you are so well informed and always ask such intelligent questions. You must invest a lot of time into reading these works. I really appreciate it ❤
Thanks! (I do 😉😊)
I was studying Russian at Bristol University in the 70s, largely because it had been on offer at school and I liked it. When at school we got taken to the Britain-USSR Association in Central London, but I didn’t get tapped on the shoulder 😅
Shauna, another great interview! You’re the best!
😘💕
Love your Snarks and can’t wait for them to come up xoxoMelbourne Melodye🤓
I would love to interview Harry! 😂💕
Just LOVE it when you have him on!! Absolutely H is vulnerable.... But, the question now is what access does he have? I don't think he would have anything they would want.
Loved this..thanks Shauna👍 Andrew Lownie is very interesting, speaks so well, great recall.
Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutely fascinating Shauna
Thanks!
Thank you 💕
ABSOLUTLY MY FAVORITE CHANNEL !!!!!!!! am I allowed to put this on my X etc? Not necessarily this show... BUT the channel?
Sure a link is fine.
Mr Lownie is amazing. Thank you for your interviews with him.
Shauna. great interview
I have been fascinated by this subject for years!! Thank you so much for bringing it to your program. There was a television documentary series about 2007 regarding this subject and I have been hooked ever since. Thanks for all you do Shauna ... your research is always incredibly well done and you are a delight!! 💞
😘💗
excellent job. you really do your homework and your questions are inciteful. thank you
Fascinating interview! I've ordered the book, and what an interesting question about Harry! I can see him being duped.
I enjoyed this episode so much! I love history and spy stories, especially. The one thing I would love to know is how these spies were compensated. Did they do it based on their convictions or were they paid money?
Well done again Shauna ❤ totally fascinating subject
🌟 Excellent as usual Shauna❗️
Thank you so much 🤗
Andrew Lownie is such an intelligent interesting guy with riveting stories. He’s given me a good reading list and I admire his perseverance in getting the true story.
So do I!
Always fascinating!
Great interview sleuth!! For local spies in Australia, I heartily recommend "With My Little Eye" by Sandra Hogan. In particular for those of us who lived in The Gap in Brisbane & whose parents were on the school committee in the 50s . You just never know. The Petrov Affair.
Thanks I’ll read it!
Of course you will!! Dearest Shauna. It is just so Brissie in every way.
I remember the scandals being discussed several times and they made a significant impression on me. I was a very curious child always interested in intrigue and mystery, and the more you and Andrew talked the more revealed to me what a fascinating life I led.
Fascinating!
This was your most fascinating and intelligent interview ever, Shauna ❤
You really are a gem 💎
😘💕
Loved this !!! Thank you both !
So glad!
@@thevintagereadI watched that interview with Guy , I believe your take was right on - I too think he was kind of pleading to get back to the UK 😮
So interesting...will head to library to see if I can get Andrew's books to educate myself further.
Get it in kennel 12.00 🇨🇦
Really interesting interview, I’m intrigued now to learn more about Andrew’s work.
Fascinating!! I really enjoy both of you Shauna and Andrew! Love this sort of discussion - please can we have many more!!
Ps just watched the CBC short - even more fascinating!!!
More to come!
@@thevintageread excellent! Just watched the CBC short...
That was a very interesting video. The thought that it is still going on is interesting and social media makes espionage much easier.
Christopher Geidt now works for MI6, well well well.
