"Building Hope and Resilience in Children Who Witness Violence"
The many negative outcomes associated with children witnessing acts of domestic violence are predictive but not determinative. Resilience is increasingly understood to be the key to thriving in adulthood despite exposure to childhood traumas. This webinar will cover the harm that children exposed to domestic violence experience, but will also explore hope as an antidote to adverse experiences and how individuals, agencies and communities can work to build more resilient children by developing programs and systems designed to instill hope in children exposed to violence and trauma.
Speaker: Ken Shetter is the President of One Safe Place, a crime and violence prevention collaborative serving all of Tarrant County. Under his leadership, One Safe Place has established a highly successful training and education program, developed one of the most innovative and successful Crime Stoppers programs in the world, expanded the highly successful Imagine No Violence initiative and created important programs for at-risk children and youth. The One Safe Place Family Justice Center, recognized as one of the most effective and comprehensive programs of its kind, serves thousands of victims of domestic violence and their children each year.
Mr. Shetter earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Baylor University in 1994 and a Master of Arts in Applied Sociology from The American University in Washington, D.C. in 1995. While attending The American University, Mr. Shetter was a Dean's Scholar and a Sociology Department Fellow. In May, 1998, he earned a degree of Juris Doctor from Baylor Law School where he was a member of the mock trial team.
In addition to his One Safe Place duties, Mr. Shetter serves as National Director of the National Family Justice Center Alliance with Alliance for Hope International. Mr. Shetter served as the mayor of Burleson, Texas for sixteen years where he focused on youth, education and families. During his tenure, Burleson experienced tremendous economic and population growth, was recognized by America’s Promise Alliance as one America’s top 100 communities for young people and passed innovative ordinances to protect victims of domestic violence and children who witness acts of domestic violence.
