    Nice review - thank you. I've collected several Pilots and all have been perfect out of the box. I have an 823 in the Clear model. I'm usually not a fan of gold trim either, but somehow it looks great. Since U.S. retailers did not carry the Clear version, I bought from an excellent seller in Japan (no coupon codes, unfortunately, but good prices).

    Good review. A pen I have used but do not own, my pen focus has not returned to Pilot, I am satisifed with the ones I have for now. Glad to hear Mike fixed your nib. Richard Binder did the same with my Omas. Hard to believe the magic a Nib Meister can do until one experiences it. Another of the wonderful adventures in the pen universe.

    Hiya FigBoot, enjoyed this review and it was watched a number of times as this pen is on my radar. Feed... Pilot pens are a pain in the Aristotle.
    I have a couple but the feed problem in particular was highlighted in the one needing good ink flow, my Pilot custom heritage 912 with F A nib, the feed just will not keep up and I bought this pen so the flex part will teach me NOT to press too hard which is a legacy from my old job where everything was done on these horrible triplicate self carbonising toilet paper forms,,, and having to use ball points to do the work. I ended up sending my 912 pen back and The Pen Chalet fixed everything up, the second one was a little better but Pilot has problems here.
    The Heritage 823 is a lovely pen and I too like the. vacuum cleaning filling system (hahaha.) Demonstrator pens appeal to me and this being semi transparent, you can see the ink sloshing about. I didnt realize the date was on the nib!!! Thats something new to me.
    Im enjoying your presrntations a lot, so thank you for your dedication and interest in the hobby also for taking the time to make and share.
    Best wishes to all pen peoples.

    Pro tip:
    The TWSBI Vac 700 piston fits inside this pen. How did I find out? Well my buddy had a broken Vac 700 and so he bought a new one. Well, months later, he bought this pen and decided to see if it would fit. So he took the Vac 700R piston rod and put it into this pen because it no longer has the tapered small o-ring on his pen so he doesn’t have to open the back cap. 👍🏻

    After you had your pen tuned by a nibsmith, at an extra expense to you, the review became pointless. We (myself included) keep giving pen companies a pass for not doing the one thing pens are supposed to do well.
    Three experts had to check your nib before getting it to work, it's ridiculous.
    And yes, I had a faulty broad 823 nib too.

    I have 11 gold nibbed Pilot pens. All of the Customs & Custom Heritage pens have required some work to get flowing well. Usually the issue is the tines are touching too tightly at the tip, which I fix myself with an index card between the tines. Some of them have arrived not writing at all, and as much as I love Pilot - the poor quality control is making it hard for me to recommend the pens to others without a warning like you included in your review. OUTSTANDING review and those close-up photos are amazing!

  • @GlennHigley

    I love my medium Amber 823. Sorry to hear (and surprised) that you had a nib issue, but if anyone can correct one - it's Mike Masuyama. Not surprised that the nib is one of your favorites as I find Pilot nibs second only to those from OMAS. I found mine on eBay for just over $200 shipped which seems more than fair for a pen of this quality. Thanks for another fine review, David.

    I agree on the comments about the silver coloured trim. I would prefer to buy a clear or smoke version with silver coloured trim if I could, and that has held me off from buying one so far. When buying a luxury item like this I want it to be exactly as I prefer, but I wouldn't be suprised if I end up buying one with the gold coloured trim eventually because it is after all mostly for the writing experience.

    THREE nib meisters needed to fix this pen! Wow. I realize this is an old video. Hope Pilot has solved such issues in the meantime. Beautiful pen, but at that price it is simply out of my budget for wants, not needs, and at least now I know I wouldn't take the risk, either. I'll stick with my clear Kakuno.

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would categorize this as a very rare mystery issue, and not something which should be used to judge Pilot as a whole. I own many high-end Pilot pens and this was the only issue I have ever had with one right out of the box.

    Great review as usual. It's too bad that your pen didn't perform well out of the box. I actually just received my 823 with FA nib a few days ago, and it was perfect right away. Very smooth xf/f lines, easily flexing up to broad or beyond. It also seems to have avoid3d the flow issues that 912 and 743 FA pens generally have, though i need to test it more to be sure. I got mine in clear, and I think the gold accents it perfectly. It's my new favorite pen. The only problem is that it's so perfect, I now need the amber...

    I really feel reviewers are being far too lenient with the manufacturers' lax quality control on their 'flagship' pens. (And far too ready to spend yet more hard-earned cash to getting that recalcitrant pen to do what it was designed to do out of the box. And not all of us have access to specialist nib-wizards and trade-show experts). When you can but a nice enough pen from China at a fraction of the cost that has no issues, why can't other pen makers get it right? After all Japanese car makers have a good reputation for making complex machines, so what is it about attitudes towards pen customers' and pen-reviewers rights, that makes it ok for Pilot and others to release sub-standard products? I think that sending the pen back will start to send a stern message back to the sloppy manufacturers (let's not kid ourselves, QC should be mandatory on these products), and that reputations should be on the line if the goods aren't fit for purpose out of the box.

  • @NGMonocrom

    Have to be honest.... For the cost, for being a Flagship pen from a company with the type of background Pilot has; such a pen simply should not need to be sent off so soon after receiving it, waiting and paying more on top of it. I was considering this pen. But after seeing another review in which similar issues were encountered, I think I'll pass on this one. Thank you for the review.

      I’m really not sure they did. Some people have wildly different ink and writing preferences. If you like an excessively wet nib, slightly dryer (or less lubricated) ink, and write quickly (as he does), then some of those issues should be expected.

  • @clarenceyee3529
    @clarenceyee3529 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Moley, Moley, Moley LOLOL. Another nice review Dave. I never noticed the date stamp at the base of the nib until you pointed it out. Mine is a F and unlike your experience, it wrote perfectly right out of the box. I wonder if that is due to the nib size since your medium probably needs more ink flow than my F. I inked it with Kon-Peki which behaves nicely.

    This is my fourth Pilot pen, after Elite 95s, CH92 and CH912. I bought it in broad nib and it is my least favourite Pilot nib. As for the pen...It's a bit of a pain to clean. They use the same section as on 912 but I feel 823 is less balanced.
    Talking about use on the planes, Pilot Elite 95s is the only pen that never leaks on the plane. But I'm not sure if that is true for my specific pen or for the model in general.

      Which has a better writing experience? I like smooth nibs with a nice wide line.
      I hate the gold trim on the 823 and the VAc filler doesn’t enamour me either. But I feel if I don’t get the 823 I’ll be missing out on something special .

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I understand, the changes to the Vac700 are purely internal, with a slight design alteration to the plunger mechanism. In regard best value...we're really talking about two drastically different price ranges. The 823 is more than 4x the cost of the Vac700. They both provide decent value, so it would boil down to what price range you are looking for. If you're looking for a sub-$100 pen, then the Vac700 is great...if you're looking for a $300 pen, then there aren't many better than the 823.
