Hey Dave, thank you for this video. I've just fitted this kit (the coil and points version) to my very first saw, a Stihl 08s. Chasing bog down, I had rebuilt everything, gaskets, seals, carb, compression tested (piston and cylinder in great condition), and finally she is running really strong now, no more bog down, way stronger than before the old ignition failed. Using a spark tester I could see the spark died out as the throttle was applied. Prior to the fix, the saw would start cold, some condensate would come from the exhaust, presumably from incomplete combustion, and the saw would bog when applying throttle, eventually when warm it became impossible to start. After changing ignition which really was plug and play as in the video, the saw fired immediately, and with some carb tuning runs better than I have ever had it running in 20 years.
Went down this same rabbit hole for a 056 magnum. Surprisingly has a two part fly wheel with SEM ignition I believe. Happy to hear you got her running, heavy but powerful.
@@DavesSmallEngines yeah for the most part. Just rebuilt carb, and still need to fix the killswitch. Just been tuning and once I put a new chain on I will start bucking.
Thank you Dave! My stihl ts410 concrete saw was doing the same thing. Coil is 6 months old and doing the same (Chinese junk). Swapped it out and runs like new again! Thank you!
Well Dave, a day late! Just picked up MS441C , it had the same symptoms and they replaced ignition system and the carburetor and fuel cap! She be purring right now! They are so perfect with the right tuning! I like using the tachometer, seems like you can get the carburetor closer then by ear.
Hey Jim! Totally different ignition system, so it’s all good! I have a 441C as well, but it has that new fan-dangled M-Tronic carb. I have a big bore kit on it thst I’m not happy with so I’m going to down grade in size but go back to an OEM cylinder and meteor piston. That video will be up soon!
Hey David! I use one of @donyboy73 ‘a business cards on a normal coil… however this is a fixed coil and the gap is pre set. No way to set the gap on this setup.
Could you show the sound it does when it bogs? Does it still tun at idle as if its a bad carburetor high circuit adjustment? I never saw a coil/ ignition doing the same as a lean high "jet". Please help
Same symptoms and fix with a more modern saw? I have a jonsered 2050 (husq’45)that comes out swinging, then bogs and dies when warmed up. But it will idle fine and restart fine after sitting for a minute. I think I have ruled out fuel/vapour because farting around with the choke doesn’t keep it going. Thanks for the great vids and enjoy that beefy saw this spring!
Hey Sean - I’m wondering if it isn’t a tank vent issue? When it dies, put the saw on its side and see if you hear any hissing when you open the fuel tank. If you do, it’s likely the tank vent. Please let me know!
@@DavesSmallEngines installed new coil today, did not fix the bogging. Exact same running characteristics. I tried a different spark plug too. To be fair, it sat under a tree for at least 5-10years and had signs of heavy use. But good compression. Anyway $25 well spent on an experiment. I’ll keep digging on this one.
Dave please keep us updated on this saw, I have an 032 same shape and I can’t get the chain to stop running at idle like yours and it won’t pull over with the chain brake on due to crazy high compression. I’ve stripped and cleaned the clutch, replaced the clutch springs, tuned it, turned the idle screw down so much it stalls, tried with and without a bar on, different chain tensions and it runs beautifully except for the turning chain. I’m thinking now maybe it’s sucking in air somewhere or I need to try a new carby, any thoughts ?
I have 4 Stihl 041 chainsaws and 3 of them have Sweden SEMS and one saw has a Bosch German ignition system. The ignition systems are bad in all saws. This Bosch ignition looks exactly like my 041 German coil ignition in one of my 041 Stihl saws. Would this work using the German flywheel in a 041 saw? If so, how much do they cost?
Great video Dave many thanks, very informative. Just ordered this unit for my 056 Super. One thing, you didn't mention the timing, the OEM had elongated mounting holes and faint timing marks. How did you set yours ? Thanks from Australia.
great job buddy; i have a vintage 031 that has a similar problem. i have rebuilt the carb and it has great compression. it runs great when cold, but it runs like it is running lean once it gets warm. does my saw have a similar problem? thanks. i have a 455 rancher too and your video on that rebuild was super helpful.
Davey, the spark plug wire on my stihl somehow has a small portion that got nicked. It runs fine but is it ok to just put electrical tape wrap it up with electrical tape?
Electrical tape will get slimy and ineffective after a while. I’d pull the boot and contact off and slide some heat shrink tubing down over it and use a head gun or similar to tighten it onto the spot.
@@DavesSmallEngines i just realized something. Pulling the boot off is something i have never tried doing ever on a chainsaw. Maybe a short tutorial on that would make a decent content for your channel. 😂😂😂

Good job on the saw Dave, sounds really good. Hey I'm no saw expert but why would some exhaust be coming out from the cylinder area on the right side of the saw and not all through the muffler?
Actually in the middle of this very same saw, even was on their website looking to buy ignition, they have 2 up on there, wasn't sure which to go as one says will not replace SEM, Im only novice but loving it, even made a puller for flywheel, damaged threads hitting with a hammer(nó need for a brass hammer now 🔨😂) but question is, saw start 2nd/3rd pull every time, sit idle for ever, reving up nó problem, but as soon as it hit wood bogging stall out and backfire through carb, is this all because of ignition? Research and couple old guys said timing 🙈 I'm not there yet on know how but interesting! I'm not giving up on this saw! Thanks for video. Subscribed 👍
@@DavesSmallEngines no, haven't had time to get back at it, have basket full saegenspezi, few rubber mounts gone and few other bits needed, and I'm gonna go with new coil. Will let you know if it does the job 👍
just started working on one of these , got it running on gas thru the carb but was left with gas in it years ago. cleaned carb and found nothing wrong so started it again and noticed a loose jug so tore into it , it was missing 1 cylinder bolt and a second one was loose along with both muffler bolts loose , got that all fixed and now have no spark, crazy to think it ran better with 1 missing bolt and 3 loose ones then after it was corrected ., no wonder the impulse wasnt triggering the car , when all the air was exiting the crankcase thru the gasket , a new coil maybe now???
nice video Dave!
Thank you Sir!
Excellent video. Your patience in waiting to finally get the part paid off.

Pure workhorse. Needs sharp chain, clean airfilter, high octane fuel with Stihl oil. Saw for life.

how do you get the right gap to the coil to the fly wheel on the inside like that? thanks
Usually a business card gives the correct gaps
In lawn mowers anyways, but with a multimeter you can get the ohms
With Briggs 9.81 is good 12.5 plus is near bad
Business card will work but i use a feeler gauge and set the gap between 5 to 7 thousandths and never have any issues
Hey David! I use one of @donyboy73 ‘a business cards on a normal coil… however this is a fixed coil and the gap is pre set. No way to set the gap on this setup.
Check exhaust screen first.
What price was it compared to OEM part?
That saw sounds really good Dave
Thanks Jeremy! Can’t wait to get it into some wood.
how big is the piston in the 056, I have the 045 and they look identical to me
Great job, Dave. Always a pleasure to watch and learn.
Cheers and thanks!
So you went after market .because the OEM is not available ?
Correct - this is a late 70’s early 80’s saw!

It sounds like the something it hitting while the engine is running

Let's see it cut some logs!!
Now you need to tune it... Ignition is only one part of a good running engine
Yep! That’s on the list!!!

i repair that old bosch ignition by capacitor change, 2$ fix
