@MrBrenman used to be super arrogant. Now let me tell you, to me Mike portnoy is my forever favourite drummer but he was arrogant, attention seeking etc etc kind of someone. But I can tell Mike eased off soo much in the last years.
His attitude I can promise is a huge part of why he gets the gigs. He's passionate about what he does, he has no ego, he wears his heart on his sleeve, and he works his ass off. When someone does all of those things, they won't fail. People like to hire and be around other people who are like him, so be that guy that others want to be around, that guy that others want on their team. I wish more musicians had his attitude, but it's pretty rare because there's so much ego in the bar-band league all the way up to newer prog bands who are still building their sound and lineup. It's hard to find good people who are competent, and care, and can see a project through to the end.
What a great soul. Two things he said that I love: (1) I have the fear of God in my heart. I have been entrusted with this gift and I want to work hard with it. (2) I have learned to serve others. Regardless of the drumming, he is indeed a great soul. You can tell he is a very caring and giving person. Bless him.
Sethalos indeed he did, I always thought the 2 drummers that'd be irreplaceable was Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart, cause they do so much more for their respective bands than simply just drumming
I've been there too, with the fiance. I'm so glad for you that you had Mike to help you though it. Could you share some of his wisdom regarding the event?
Honestly I haven’t accepted Mike as DTs drummer. It was Port oy or nothing. Recently I have seen a couple Portnoy videos always swearing and seems arrogant. After seeing this, Mike Mangini is far more of a class act and humble man then Portnoy is. Portnoy is an amazing drummer as is Mike, but Managini belongs in DT.
Mike I wish I could meet you in person. I love Humbled Drummers and you are one of the many. God has Blessed you,and you are using what he gave you,and a lot of us fail to do what he has gifted us to do. Filling in Mike Portnoys shoes is a big task but you are the chosen one,and you are worthy. It's a joy to watch you play.
Listening to Mike Mangini talk is refreshing, this guy has his shit together, is extremley humble, he does things in the drumset that only 1% of the other pro drummers can do and he talks like a newbie, this guys is a great humang being, a drummer that I have become to follow and admire because he is a freaking full package, his feet are on the ground... Thanks MM, you are a true star because you really shine on the things that matter... Favorite drummer all the way...
Most important with this guy, is that he is a WONDERFUL PERSON. His magical drumming is just icing on the cake. If only Buddy Rich were this nice, just think of the lives he would have touched. There is no doubt Mike has touched many people, and will continue to do so. Good for him!
What an awesome humble man!! Mike you are an example to how one should conduct themselves on a daily basis and not just from a music stand-point. A gifted man with an exemplary attitude on how to act in a social capacity as well as the musical. Peace and respect to the Mangician!!;))
i'v said this to people before, Mangini have always, and i mean ALWAYS had my full respect as long as i'v had any knowladge, and he fits DT as much as Portnoy.. even to this day i dont understand why he left, most likely because i dont support rumors.. for me to belive whats being said is true, the band memebers HAVE to tel whats true, or i'm taking words as words, and nothing more (too many comas darn it).. But anyways: Mangini's atitude and personality is like Portnoys little brother.. The guy's a genius on any aspect.. I'm realy happy they choose him.. though i guess Marco also had the qualitys.. But Mangini have it all..
The beauty of DT is you get two of the best drummers in the world no matter which record you listen to. As for the comparisons, they are both great. I think Mangini will find his voice in time but it will be his own voice. Love this interview, Mangini is truly a humble and gracious soul. Rock on MM.
I met this guy last Friday. At the end of the show, he was heading backstage when he saw me standing at the edge of the stage (general seating/center stage). I wanted to shake his hand. He stopped where he was, turned around, and came back to shake my hand and said 'thank you' to me. What rockstar would go out of their way to do that? What a truly wonderful person he is. I was truly honored. I can't wait until he's a part of the actual writing process for Dream Theater!
i love his way of thinking, he wants to do a thing and he does it, wants to make a change and he does it!! very determined and dedicated person!! an example to follow
one of my top 5 favourite drummers. Mangini might be the most skillful, but my absolute favourite is Nicko McBrain..not the most talented, but what a character he is..and yes, Portnoy is in my top 5 :)
Dont underestimate Nicko, he is a POWERHOUSE, and doesnt use the fullest of his capabilities in Iron Maiden. They have their share on lengthy songs with progressive elements. Nicko is easily one of the best and most underrated rock/metal drummers. Don't get it twisted.
I had to watch an interview or two of Mangini to really get to know what he's like. My thoughts were when Portnoy left, Mangini joined in as a fill-in drummer, and that's all he ever was, but that's not it at all. He's really lively and I think he's great choice for Dream Theater. He should be (and is) permanent.
the MP vs. MM story is over. This guys deserved this so much. Personally, I am so happy for him. I can't wait until the new stuff comes out. MM... YOU"RE THEE MAN!! Make it happen!
I guy I meet today at out local Music store name John knows Mike very well and he said that Mike is one of the nicest people you will ever meet .He always has time for the fans and love what he does and he show that each and every time he plays .
Such an amazing person..very down to earth despite a monster in the drumming world..thats why he got the job..the guys feel very comfortable with him..the discipline..the excitement and joy potrays in mike's playing..agree with u mike..talent is not enough..hardwork is key because somebody is working much harder..thats why mangini is considered one of the best..what an amazing guy he is
Sure, I've heard him enough on DT records to know he's a phenomenal drummer, but not I'm sure why I've never bothered to listen to him talk about his experience before. What a cool dude.
True, Mangini is a really nice guy and he's a kickass drummer. I like Portnoy as well, but Mangini is a great fit for DT and he will do great. I don't know why people feel like they have to choose one side or the other.
"And the very day I got the stack of programs, I stared at them in my office... and I stared at them... and all I thought was, 'It's time for me to now go'." xD
Big love Mike. I'd really like him to jump into the next album though so we can hear this Mangini voice i.t.o composition that has been lurking for so many years. I want to hear Mangini in the music!
I refuse to believe that Mangini wasn't the #1 pick before the whole "contest" started. More of a publicity stunt than anything. Mangini was the obvious choice and they shouldn't have bothered with all the audition reality TV drama. He's a beast of a drummer and his personality seems like a perfect fit for Dream Theater.
luky man mike mangini ..... imagine to be a drumer ... and imagine now play for dream theater ,hell yeeeaaahhh im fan of DT and portnoy but we must admit mangini rox like hell , u do good mike mangini continue dude!!!
Portnoy didn't go to replace the A7X drummer... He and A7X have both said that it was never a permanent thing. Portnoy just wanted a break from dream theater for a little bit but the others didn't so Portnoy felt that he had to step away, he just happened to be filling in for A7X at the same time.
I think Mangini has alot of class and would be interesting to talk to far more portnoy for sure. Teaching and working in science has to add to the dream theater effect.
Never compare people. It is like comparing colors, every single of them is good and if you don't like certain colors it doesn't make them worse or bad.
Hmm, how about this: Mike Mangini and Mike Portnoy are BOTH amazing drummers and musicians. There, now stop hating.
The answer is clear: It's Mike
vacuity71 Have your like, you good man
no the answer is clear, its mike lol
Guys, we all know mike is better...
well both mikes are great
This interview needs to be added to any discussion of excellence, passion, dedication or achievement! Wow!
What a beautiful, passionate human being. He deserves every single thing he has.
He is really likable. Not a shred of arrogance.
Unlike ahem.. you know..
@MrBrenman Mike portnoy
@MrBrenman used to be super arrogant. Now let me tell you, to me Mike portnoy is my forever favourite drummer but he was arrogant, attention seeking etc etc kind of someone. But I can tell Mike eased off soo much in the last years.
@MrBrenman okay
I like that he doesn't talk like a rock star; he talks like a smart man who works hard to achieve his goals.
man what a workman like solid attitude, plus all that talent ability?no wonder he never lost an audition.Monster of a great great drummer
His attitude I can promise is a huge part of why he gets the gigs. He's passionate about what he does, he has no ego, he wears his heart on his sleeve, and he works his ass off. He had some HUGE shoes to fill, and he has done an awesome job. Huge fan.
Sethalos indeed he did, I always thought the 2 drummers that'd be irreplaceable was Mike Portnoy and Neil Peart, cause they do so much more for their respective bands than simply just drumming
Mr. Mike Mangini is a giant ball of energy; I liken him to the Sun.
Considering your drum teacher in Berklee College of Music is the former drummer of Annihilator. My god... How kickass is that!?
I can only WISH to be that guy who had him as a teacher (I'm still in high school)
And actual DT!
Mike is truly a smart, kind and energetic soul. He's one of my few idols I meditate on about sitting behind my own kit.
Taking lessons with Mike were some of the besr moments of my life. He even helped me through breaking up with my fiance using drums to deal with it.
I've been there too, with the fiance.
I'm so glad for you that you had Mike to help you though it.
Could you share some of his wisdom regarding the event?

Mike is a wonderful and beautiful human being. Amazing drummer.
When your college teacher leaves the job to join DT.
Mike is the best, such a nice person, best drummer around. He is Doctor Drums, Professor rythm and King of Prog
Kind, humble, smart and just such a great guy! So happy he is in DT!
What an awesome guy! Respect :-)
all interviews should be conducted as this
Amazing perspectives from Mike Mangini. Downright inspirational. That's what it's all about. Commitment to the craft.
Most important with this guy, is that he is a WONDERFUL PERSON. His magical drumming is just icing on the cake. If only Buddy Rich were this nice, just think of the lives he would have touched. There is no doubt Mike has touched many people, and will continue to do so. Good for him!
He looks like Skrillex's dad
KKOPPI I was thinking Steven Wilson's brother
He is
What an awesome humble man!! Mike you are an example to how one should conduct themselves on a daily basis and not just from a music stand-point. A gifted man with an exemplary attitude on how to act in a social capacity as well as the musical. Peace and respect to the Mangician!!;))
He performed at that audition like a man needing a ticket OUT Of Berkeley.
Lol
A gentleman and a scholar. Long live Mangini!
You can still hear the Boston born-and-raised accent. Way to go Mike!
i'v said this to people before, Mangini have always, and i mean ALWAYS had my full respect as long as i'v had any knowladge, and he fits DT as much as Portnoy.. even to this day i dont understand why he left, most likely because i dont support rumors.. for me to belive whats being said is true, the band memebers HAVE to tel whats true, or i'm taking words as words, and nothing more (too many comas darn it).. Mike seems so very open, honest, and insightful. I really, really like him personally, from what I know. Not to mention what an awesome drummer he is!
When anyone throws shit to MM I can't take it... You could be salty about MP leaving, but you get an awesome drummer an a really nice guy...
I met this guy last Friday. At the end of the show, he was heading backstage when he saw me standing at the edge of the stage (general seating/center stage). I wanted to shake his hand. He stopped where he was, turned around, and came back to shake my hand and said 'thank you' to me.

truly a humble righteous man..and a hell of a drummer too...
i love his way of thinking, he wants to do a thing and he does it, wants to make a change and he does it!! very determined and dedicated person!! an example to follow
I like this guy's attitude, very likable and he has a happy personality.
I've seen this guy in action last year in Philly. He's the real deal!!!
How can someone be so nice... perfectly answered questions too.
Great attitude. He will take DT to new heights for sure!
one of my top 5 favourite drummers. Mangini might be the most skillful, but my absolute favourite is Nicko McBrain..not the most talented, but what a character he is..and yes, Portnoy is in my top 5 :)

I have never heard Mike Mangini give an interview. I never knew he's so down to earth and soft spoken.
It's good to know there's someone out there that thinks like I do
Candid. Honest. Good for you Mike!
Respect...!!
I am so impressed with this guy, not only as a drummer and musician, but as a PERSON. DT could not have made a better choice! he's awesome!
A class act! Much respect, Mike!
I guy I meet today at out local Music store name John knows Mike very well and he said that Mike is one of the nicest people you will ever meet .He always has time for the fans and love what he does and he show that each and every time he plays .

Great interview questions and amazing responses. Awesome overall.
Mike Mangenius!
A real down to earth dude; a true professional
Such an amazing person..very down to earth despite a monster in the drumming world..thats why he got the job..the guys feel very comfortable with him..the discipline..the excitement and joy potrays in mike's playing..agree with u mike..talent is not enough..hardwork is key because somebody is working much harder..thats why mangini is considered one of the best..what an amazing guy he is
Great guy. So happy for him.
This guy is the very definition of humility.
If you can't appreciate Mangini, you can't appreciate anything. He is INCREDIBLY skillful on the drums and an amazing person.
Sure, I've heard him enough on DT records to know he's a phenomenal drummer, but not I'm sure why I've never bothered to listen to him talk about his experience before. What a cool dude.
Trying out different fonts for each question must have been SO MUCH FUN!!
Man this guy is just absolutely terrific! :)
i have met him in vienna before the show, i can say, this guy is just great =)
True, Mangini is a really nice guy and he's a kickass drummer. I like Portnoy as well, but Mangini is a great fit for DT and he will do great. I don't know why people feel like they have to choose one side or the other.
A MIKE for a MIKE... this guy's well deserving.
this guy is such a nice inspiration.!!
What a professional gentleman.
I wanna hear more about the audition with Steve perry.
What a class guy. His modesty is bigger than his drumkit. :)
"And the very day I got the stack of programs, I stared at them in my office... and I stared at them... and all I thought was, 'It's time for me to now go'." xD
Good for him.
What a sweet soul.
Cool and very talented dude !!!
I play guitar and I would love to take drum lessons from Mangini.
Big love Mike. I'd really like him to jump into the next album though so we can hear this Mangini voice i.t.o composition that has been lurking for so many years. I want to hear Mangini in the music!
love his personality
Mangini rules
my hero!
Oops, thought it was Mr. Mangini's site. Thanks for letting me know.
Twenty times over! And a BETTER drummer!
This is one of my influence drumer
MIKE LOOKS LIKE A PROFESSOR WITH THOSE GLASSES ON
I refuse to believe that Mangini wasn't the #1 pick before the whole "contest" started. More of a publicity stunt than anything.
Mangini was the obvious choice and they shouldn't have bothered with all the audition reality TV drama. He's a beast of a drummer and his personality seems like a perfect fit for Dream Theater.
Plus, he had been playing with labrie too
luky man mike mangini ..... imagine to be a drumer ... and imagine now play for dream theater ,hell yeeeaaahhh
im fan of DT and portnoy but we must admit mangini rox like hell , u do good mike mangini continue dude!!!
I think we're going to hear a Dream Theater on this new album unlike anything we've heard before.
It would've been incredible to be in his class!!! @_@ can't even imagine
verry good answer.
"i have won every single one of them", in other words, he is god.
and he doesn't spit on the stage!! Mangini is a god.
Saw DT with Mangini, and it was the best DT show I've ever been to. Just sayin.
Never compare people. It is like comparing colors, every single of them is good and if you don't like certain colors it doesn't make them worse or bad.
Mangini's awesome!
How can anyone hate this guy?
Frickin' nice guy..
hahah nice to hear about Steve Perry...I'd like to hear about the Annihilator's years too!
I hate when people hate on him! He is such a nice guy!
MIKE DOES LOOK LIKE A PROFESSOR WITH THOSE GLASSES
this guy is an amazying heart as well, dont need to mention on drums
