Who wrote the lyrics for the PSB songs? I love it when the PSB go dark like this. The other video is really cool, too. In fact, I prefer it, but both of them fit the song. "Opportunities" was used in a commercial. It's one of those dark songs that some commercials have used that I could not even imagine a company would want to be associated with. Another that comes IMMEDIATELY to mind is "Chandelier" by Sia. Can you imagine having your product associated with male prostitution or alcoholism?! Astonishing!
I inherited a gay bar I the late 80s when I was 19. (AIDS decimated every other responsible person on the list) So during the day I went to my very conservative, pumping out the future masters of the universe, Patrick Bateman stock brokers and attorneys college. Then at night and on the weekends, I dealt with the bar. And the wonderful world there. I always smirked when the young stock brokers would take me out and mansplain to me how this song was there anthem because they were all about getting rich. 😆 Ah, the 80s. The Greed is good era.
The one released first is the one you mentioned being blandish did not end up on the album (although you can hear it on the Further Listening-rerelease of the album from 2001)

this was the first record i ever payed my own money for , i had the 12 "" and it was their first record released but didnt do so great untill they re-released it after the success of west end girls.

Other gems… Can you forgive her (from Very album), It’s alright ( a cover song, on Introspective album) and many others from their recent albums… like Thursday ( a kind of new West end girls), Vocal (PSB on club culture) and Burn ( more electronic, but also mainstream). 😉😘

But Neil Tennant stated that, in fact, they're bith rather pathetic and won't actually make any money at all. Its kind of a parody and good British sense if humour (before it disappears) and being ironic.

The first version did have a killer b-side though: "in the night". Still one of my favourite PSB tunes.
