I JUST found this video and it caused me to think about sharing a quick, yet exciting little story. I bought a '97 back in 1999, it was only 2 years old. I drove it very little, and it has been basically in storage since the summer 0f 2000! I took it to a car show that year (over 700 vehicles at that one) and took home a 3rd place trophy in my class ! Fast forward 22 years!............after many years of sitting quietly here in my attached garage (16 years NOT started), 3 weeks ago from this writing, that all changed. Thanks to youTube, I was able to rid the tank of very old fuel, and refill with fresh 93 octane via gas container (she wasn't registered or insured yet to get to a fuel station). Only two weeks ago, I received my ANTIQUE registration and plates. Set up the camera for a recording the start up. Pretty much the same amount of delay you have here with your Ebony car, it fired right up!, no smoke, strange noises! It was as if it had just been parked for the day! I live in a small, semi gated neighborhood, and was able to drive around our half mile circle. Transmission, brakes, all working beautifully, even the AC, cassette and CD player/power antenna functioned fine. All lighting too! Fuel gage is the only hick up I have to look into. This past Friday was it's first ride to the Ford dealer where I bought it 23 years ago for a safety inspection. Needless to say, it was a huge hit in at the Ford garage! The service manager rounded up the mechanics and even the parts manager to come take a look. Many of these fellows remember when our GEN 3's were brand new and they did regular service and inspections on them. When the inspector returned the SHO to where I was hanging out at the service desk area, he handed my reg back to me and said, "The whole car is just............pristine!" The OEM Goodyear Eagle RS-A's are still like new from 1999, but they do have a bit of flat spots, to be expected. Other then that, it sure felt good to take her for a drive after a 16 year quiet period. I wonder if the SHO in your video presentation is still with us? Most of these have rusted away or just wore out and only a handful are left in, unrestored, like new condition. I will be returning to the auto shows and cruise nights. It should be interesting to see how this true, limited production, engine specific special interest sedan will be received ((O: Thanks for reading!
Hopefully whoever bought it babies it like I do my 2010 Fusion SPORT AKA SHO Jr. Another rare car now worth hanging on to! Wish I had a SHO like this one myself though too! My Dad bought a silver 96 Taurus LX from a lease turn in back in 98. Was a loaded car and I was 12 at the time. That car was the car I later got my license in. Was a good car. Was upgraded to a 2004 Mercury Sable LS Premium also in silver than that car was upgraded to the car I have now which my Dad bought brand new off the showroom floor.
Yes, These cars are pretty reliable. There is only 1 thing to look out for. The transmission. They are known to go out after so long but I know why that happens and how to prevent it. In EVERY Taurus, when you cold start it they rev up to almost 3000 RPMS (it's norma;) and people dump it in gear as soon as they start it. Well you can't do that. it's hard on the torque converter. The best thing to do is wait for it to idle back down before putting it in gear. You should do that in any car really
My Lexus ES350 cold starts at about 2500rpm and only drops to 2000 after a few minutes. The rpms sit at 2k for a while, need atleast 10-15 minute for it to start idling at regular rpms when the engine is warm.
Another thing to watch out for with this V8 (the only Taurus with a V8) is the cam sprockets for the engine’s camshaft. That was the most major failures with this engine. The only solutions to this problem is to either weld the sprocket to the camshaft itself or to pin the sprocket to keep it aligned to the camshaft. SHO enthusiasts are known to recommend those remedies for this generation of SHO.
my uncle had a '96 taurus once. non-sho, red, cloth seats. I loved it to bits, but it eventually died and now he has a '99 Lexus ES300. the transmission on the sho seems to be in really good shape.
@trucking shenanigans they are completely useless for downforce. They were designed for fuel economy and aerodynamics by sending the air away from the rear of the car. As they do in drag cars so. Also, that little thing you call a spoiler above the taillights is JUST for style. Now go bother someone else.
Hey man i've watched your videos for years, and just wanted to thank you for your hard work and posting these vids, it's great to know saabkyle has a video you can depend! man special thanks!!
I have a 2003 Ford Taurus SEL with the Duratec V6 in it it's quite a nice/reliable car, luxurious too! When I bought it a few years back it had only 78,000 original miles on it now it has 103,567 on it but man I would love an older sho like this one or earlier just to have as a performance car
I used to think that too. My thoughts were it looked like a big jelly bean with spider eyes. They I got one. Now I am in love with it. It's one of those that just needs time to grow on you
I have one, love it to death. may not be conventional looking, may have problems (yes my cams are welded) but it handles and drives as well as most new cars. And I've demolished boosted civics, an integra, earlier camaros and mustangs. the only things faster in the $4000 price range are 300zx, turbo 240sx, and v6 eclipses. I love my car.
People say that this was a dumpster fire because of the Pistons colliding after a certain amount of mileage but at least it was a decent car despite the ridiculous engine it's still put on a show
+Bobby Brady Actually styling aside the 96-99 Was an OK car in terms of driving dynamics & was pretty spacious....interior materials & finnish were probably as close to Toyota-Honda in a Domestic mid size sedan certainly better than anything from Chrysler & GM at the time.
+Bobby Brady can't quite say the same for the 2000-2007 Model.....Driving Dynamics were pretty unchanged but outclassed over the Years because the competition was improving continiously....the 2000 Refresh also has Cheaper interior materials than the 96-99 Model.
@Smacdoug1 I've always noticed this about this generation Taurus and Sable. They are 100% round/oval and bubbly in every little detail. The back window is round, the radio and even the buttons on the radio all oval/round. There's not a square or line on the car. Interesting design. haha
@thatsmy409scion This is only a 3.4l and 6100 is pretty low revs. Also consider the fairly restrictive exhaust and intake to keep it quiet and it really isn't bad. The VQ35DE is a 3.5 V6 and makes the same amount of power (240) when tuned to the same type of "comfort" level rather than more "sporty" like the Z's 290 hp. The only thing to look down on this engine for is the cam problem which is easily repaired.
Despite its looks, I'll bet it's reliable as all hell. I've found that reliability in even the least attractive of cars can make them look like Aston Martins in their owner's eyes.
i dont know why but i never knew this generation SHO had a V8 in it... i used to drive a 99 sable with the V6 and that kicked ass alone, i couldnt imagine a V8 haha
it would have been nice to see wat the sho would have looked like when they changed the design in 2000....but nice car we have a 05 and its been a good car....
had one with the police package as a young officer. IT WAS MY BEST PATROL CAR EVEN THOUGH I BLEW THE TRANNY (at 135mph while braking far a 90 degree turn.
Anyone who says that these engines either cannot or should not be welded has absolutely NO IDEA what they are talking about. And If you choose to NOT listen to the warnings and have the cams welded on your 96-99 V8 SHO.... I personally will make a standing offer to buy your SHO for $250 once the engine is destroyed because you listened to someone who knew nothing about the car or you thought "this won't happen to you
@wizard101emily it's not burning oil. oil burns blue smoke from a car. white is either burning coolant meaning the block is cracked ( which i don't think was the issue), like you said a cold day, or because it's a v8 it's burning the fuel completely along ith working cats and exhaust emmiting water vapor or condensation.
@Shrike2415 Thats not the sound of a V8 SHO cam getting ready to spin. When most spin they do not give any warning. Some do, but it does not sound like this.
Ford went wrong with this car. You gained like 10 horsepower over the previous generation, and you added 2 more cylinders on this model. The pre 1996 SHO's were the best ones made, and a total sleeper. I hope to own one soon.
Beautiful car, but the previous generation SHO did a better job at separating itself from the plain Taurus. I can't believe they didn't even put fog lights in here or the inflating side bolsters
@gasmaskhalo3 Not back then it wasn't, that actually had 20 more horsepower than the mustang gt. Not as much torque but still. Those engines did have serious cam problems though
But yeah if you are ever in a situation where you need a car for cheap, Taurus is the way to go. since Ford made 6.7 million of them the blue book value is like $2,000 for one in the best shape, they are one of the safest cars on the road, they are pretty reliable and they are good on gas. That's why I got one. But if you want one that looks a little classier they go for the 2000 - 2007 Taurus. the early 2000's are still around $2000. The car ain't my first choice but hey, it does the job I say.
I would take a Ford over a Benz any day too. I actually used to own an E430, I bought it used and the car fax was clean, and it had so many problems. It was in the shop at least once every 2 to 3 months. Not to mention the fact that repairs cost a lot of money....
What did he take off the roof in the back but really nice car i love these cars and it's always so nice to see one of these that old and in that good of condition good video
@speedtrap100 ya i dnt no wat that is....i saw sumthin dripin of the back of the muffler...........it might be water with bad quality on the vid.....idk but it looks new andway????
@PVTINVEST Tranny problems...sometimes. Suspension problems...none. This supsension is as good as it gets. It is a three stage and can hang with the best of the sportscars in the curves. These cars are definitely not garbage.
vary vary rare SHO. The car phone is a rare piece not many of the V8 SHOs have it also in vary vary good condition. Another thing is you want to find out if the CAMs are welded if they are not and slip it turns the car into a $250 pile of scrap. The Gen 1 and gen 2 SHOs came with the V6 Yamaha engine the Gen 2s had a auto version and a bigger displacement engine at 3.2L as opposed to the manual 3.0L. Another feature is the JBL system it has a 6X9 factory sub woofer on the rear deck.
@Boston1775 Fact check: The V8's are 1 tenth of a second quicker to 60 mph than the V6 models and they have 15 more horspower. Actually they have 17.4 more since the true reading of the V8 is 237.4 horses. And what is wrong with a Grand Prix? Nothing.
so your saying i have to get out of the car into the trunk just to change CDs alot of work but car is nice i want to buy one cause they are kinda quick and not as expensive

Make absolutely sure that the sprockets get welded so the cam doesn't spin.
When the SHO dies, you repair the SHO. Because the SHO must go on.
That's rather witty.
Damn nice pun doe
What a SHO-off
SHOws how cool the sho is.
Except when the cams fail then it's off to the sho junkyard.
Yes, These cars are pretty reliable. There is only 1 thing to look out for. The transmission. They are known to go out after so long but I know why that happens and how to prevent it. If it's a 3.4 V8 than you have more than just some random transmission problem to worry about like welding cam's
"That: Is the coolest thing I have ever seen!"
lol you are awesome Kyle.
I've always loved the Taurus, especially the LX, SHOs and the Sable LS Premiums
car is awesome for a 1996 it looks brand new!
my uncle had a '96 taurus once. non-sho, red, cloth seats. I loved it to bits, but it eventually died and now he has a '99 Lexus ES300. the transmission on the sho seems to be in really good shape.
Front looks like nice family car, back looks like a beast!
Ha are you kidding me, with that tiny useless little wing.... I'd rather chop it off
It’s the egg mobile, it looks like a egg and that was what people called it when it came out back in the day.
@@Noah-M-P Others called this generation of the Ford Taurus the "jelly bean", or more derisively; the "cosmic roach" and the "radioactive catfish."
@trucking shenanigans they are completely useless for downforce. They were designed for fuel economy and aerodynamics by sending the air away from the rear of the car. As they do in drag cars so. That is one of the coolest intake manifold setup i have ever seen!
I've always loved the SHO. Nice find and seems to be in great condition.
I don’t know why, but I’ve always loved the way this generation of Taurus looked
Wow. 1996? Really? Looking at the shape of this beast I'd say 2006! lol
I just bought one of these cars. Granted, mine is not nearly as mint of condition and optioned as that one is, but i have to say, I love the car!
That had a phone inside. That must have been a luxury back then😀
Phones in cars were around since 1946
I used to think that too. My thoughts were it looked like a big jelly bean with spider eyes. They I got one. Now I am in love with it. It's one of those that just needs time to grow on you
My first American sedan!! Brilliant job bro.
I miss the vehicles of the 90s !! :(
Great video as always Kyle! Gotta love those older cell phones too!
Haha I love your enthusiasim over the passenger vanity mirror @ 9:35 :)
Wow.. just a luxury old car.. Love it.. i had mine 1999, Not sport (SHO), with 286 300 k still running perfectly,😊
They really went all out with the circles on this one
I always like the way these cars are designed inside and out
This car was advanced for its time!
People say that this was a dumpster fire because of the Pistons colliding after a certain amount of mileage but at least it was a decent car despite the ridiculous engine it's still put on a show
Doesn't even look like a 1996 car. Looks more like an early 2000 one
***** Well I know that. I was saying it looks like a car that wouldve been made in the early 2000's, not that it looked like the early 2000's Taurus.

That's extreme lol. But unlike some people on TH-cam & the internet. I'm not going to bash you for having an opinion lol
form109 Like a plasticky 1997 Camry was anything to write home about...
can we get to the part where the sprocket slips on the cam and destroys the whole engine?
AnthonyTube -That's why when you get one, you make sure the cams have been welded, and if they're not, it's the FIRST thing you take care of!
That gen Taurus was very quirky and strange especially the radio still a cool car
@Smacdoug1 I've always noticed this about this generation Taurus and Sable. They are 100% round/oval and bubbly in every little detail. The back window is round, the radio and even the buttons on the radio all oval/round. There's not a square or line on the car. Interesting design. haha
sideburns2009 The tape deck is kind of square-ish xD
Far more attractive than the current Taurus.
I have three. Two Gen threes and a Gen one. It didn't cost me that much to get the came welded on the v8s. Fun sleepers.
that's pretty cool how its got a car phone. it makes you feel like a late 80 early 90s businessman
love that car so much
@thatsmy409scion This is only a 3.4l and 6100 is pretty low revs. Also consider the fairly restrictive exhaust and intake to keep it quiet and it really isn't bad. I had one and did the Porterized ram air intake thing. Sounded so fukin' good.
Very nice looking SHO. I'm sure your dad is asking a pretty penny for it.

A FWD transverse V8?
Very alien but very awesome, was expecting to find a V6 when you popped that hood..
Best Taurus alive
In your review, the Engine and Transmission seem brand new
going to checkout a 96 taurus I believe gl or g model tomorrow
have the cams welded if you already havent. i have a 98 sho i love it its great in the snow too just get the right tires
it would have been nice to see wat the sho would have looked like when they changed the design in 2000....but nice car we have a 05 and its been a good car....
hi awesome vid i was wondering if you could do a video on how to use the number thing on the ford driver side door that would be awesome thanks.
i like the 2000- 2005 models, but this one is sweet too, hey btw, if you come across a 2007 mitsubishi galant, id love to see that! 5/5
no blown engine? and are u in florida? i like it and btw does the a/c work???
Damn those SHO's have a smaller V8 than a Ferrari 355 o.O!!! Impressive tho, that'd be one Taurus I'd defiantly drive!!!
had one with the police package as a young officer. IT WAS MY BEST PATROL CAR EVEN THOUGH I BLEW THE TRANNY (at 135mph while braking far a 90 degree turn.
Anyone who says that these engines either cannot or should not be welded has absolutely NO IDEA what they are talking about.

I’d love to have one of these
car looks amazing, sounds great too, but i don't know if i could get the v8 with all the cam problems.
hope the cams are welded. awesome car
Engine looks brand new!
+Bobby Brady I think he meant that as a compliment to the owner/seller. . .
I'm getting one EXACTLY like this today! Haha hopefully xD The stock hubcaps look like aftermarket rims to me xD
love you videos.. YOU ROCK
yeah ok
So what exactly do you do for the dealership? I'm thinking about trying to get a similar gig at a dealership around here
@wizard101emily it's not burning oil. oil burns blue smoke from a car. white is either burning coolant meaning the block is cracked ( which i don't think was the issue), like you said a cold day, or because it's a v8 it's burning the fuel completely along ith working cats and exhaust emmiting water vapor or condensation.
nice car man! 5/5
my car is a 2012 accord coupe v6. I have alot to learn still about cars lol thanks for the info
I'm about to buy a '96 Ford Taurus SHO. And show or no show, its cheap, american made and reliable
@Shrike2415 Thats not the sound of a V8 SHO cam getting ready to spin. When most spin they do not give any warning. Some do, but it does not sound like this.
me just vibin watchin this video
*pops the hood*
I just start smiling and laughing
Make sure to get the cams welded!
3.4L is pretty small for an american V8 . the current SHO has a 3.5L V6.
Yeah. You usually only see V8s that small in European supercars, like the McClaren.
Ford went wrong with this car. You gained like 10 horsepower over the previous generation, and you added 2 more cylinders on this model. The pre 1996 SHO's were the best ones made, and a total sleeper. I hope to own one soon.
It's a Japanese V-8. Yamaha made it.
...but it's small even for a Japanese V-8 lol. But, for a Yamaha engine, it's huge 🤣
@SteelCity1981 There's a dude that has a Gen3 with a manual transmission. He did all the work himself. His profile name is VenomSHO.
the engine on the 1996-1999 Ford Taurus SHO
Engine
3.4 L SHO V8
It's a shame they didn't carry these over on the Gen 4 2000-2006...But it's nice to know they brought them back even nastier than ever!
Ok there's the CD changer I was looking for😊
Glad you like your CLS550, I suppose that's why you drive one.
Beautiful car, but the previous generation SHO did a better job at separating itself from the plain Taurus. I can't believe they didn't even put fog lights in here or the inflating side bolsters
I would have bought a SHO like that but the 96-99's all had automatic trans only, no manual option, which i found odd for a car like this.
@gasmaskhalo3 Not back then it wasn't, that actually had 20 more horsepower than the mustang gt. Not as much torque but still. Those engines did have serious cam problems though
Beautiful car
But yeah if you are ever in a situation where you need a car for cheap, Taurus is the way to go. since Ford made 6.7 million of them the blue book value is like $2,000 for one in the best shape, they are one of the safest cars on the road, they are pretty reliable and they are good on gas. That's why I got one. But if you want one that looks a little classier they go for the 2000 - 2007 Taurus. the early 2000's are still around $2000. The car ain't my first choice but hey, it does the job I say.
I ridden in so many Taurus with problems. I used to have one.
Surprised that a small car like that has a V8. Exhaust sounds good too because of that.
ha our 94 Taurus GL puts out about 180, and it has 4.0L V6 in it.
Would you be able to do a 2nd or 1st gen taurus sho video by any chance if u culd i would appreciate it
My sister has a white 1999 Ford Taurus and it's got 158,000 miles on it
I would take a Ford over a Benz any day too.
The sun roof is motorized. He took the cover off from the ceiling in the rear roof area.
can you do a newer ford ranger in depth tour and test drive
Beautiful
@speedtrap100 ya i dnt no wat that is....i saw sumthin dripin of the back of the muffler...........it might be water with bad quality on the vid.....idk but it looks new andway????
@PVTINVEST Tranny problems...sometimes. Suspension problems...none. This supsension is as good as it gets. It is a three stage and can hang with the best of the sportscars in the curves. These cars are definitely not garbage.
Nice car. Now to get parts for it.
I drive a 98 SHO and all the parts are still available.
vary vary rare SHO.
@Ian Conner Say it's reliable when the cam heads separate from the cams leaving you sol on the side of the road.
Yamaha V8
احلى شكل للتوراس .موجودة فى مصر
The car comes with a power antenna? I didn't know that.
@Boston1775 Fact check: The V8's are 1 tenth of a second quicker to 60 mph than the V6 models and they have 15 more horspower. Actually they have 17.4 more since the true reading of the V8 is 237.4 horses. And what is wrong with a Grand Prix? Nothing.
man i miss my 96.....but im buying a 98 in a week!
I USED TO HAVE ONE!! THEY SUCK BADLY! Mine only lasted me a month before the engine EXPLODED! Literally! Had only 119K on it too!
Unfortunately, these models, especially many Fords are notorious for only making it to around 100,000 until problems start arising.
so your saying i have to get out of the car into the trunk just to change CDs alot of work but car is nice i want to buy one cause they are kinda quick and not as expensive
1:03, Why did the phone just beep?
He loves it so much he has no videos of it of course lol
I have a 1997 Taurus Wagon, it is my first car. Nice car, but it wouldn't be my first choice for looks.
