I would think that all the parts of a plane should be made in a huge single and separate area to save a ton of money in transportation costs as well as more efficient communication. I also wonder if the engines are fitted with explosive bolts to facilitate a water landing if needed.

How much fuel could a plane save if it didn't require any exterior paint? And how much weight is all that paint adding to the aircraft?

I worked as an aircraft mechanic back in the early sixties. Painting the exterior of those four engine cargo planes was a major project. Special crews were brought in to do the job. The hanger were the plane was worked on by us mechanics had to be emptied and all equipment covered that couldn’t be moved. The paint crew, usually four guys, would wash down the entire fuselage with a pressure washer and let it dry, this usually took a couple days. Scaffolding would be erected as they moved from one part of the fuselage to another. It was a dangerous job. These big cargo planes are much bigger than they appear. Some tail sections were forty feet high. A long way to fall onto a concrete floor for the painting crew. These cargo planes were ordered with white paint, a LOT of white paint. Hundreds of gallons were sprayed on the exterior after prepping the aircraft surface. I would say the paint weighed over ten pounds per gallon. This would add about 10,000 pounds to the aircraft. This weight was figured into the construction of the aircraft by the design engineers. The paint crew would then paint the companies logo as ordered. I always thought painting a cargo plane was a waste of time and money. The cargo planes I worked on were ordered by a Brazilian company. Their business was flying beef cattle carcasses over the Andes to Chile for processing.
