a lot of underrated guitarists that faded out in the 80s and 90s like greg howe, tony mcalpine, vito bratta, vivian campbell, harry cody, jake e lee, warren dmartini.
when i heard "underrated". i feel weird. knowing those days, there were many great shredder. each with their own uniqueness. While Shredding world was Intense, American Pop was also on its peak. People couldnt buy so many album at once. Just my 2 cents.
Tony Mac has been extremely busy, he was struck down with cancer shortly after Concrete Gardens was released, it's an incredible album from 2015, an absolute tour de force of instrumental prog metal. Check it out.
David Sim basically his left hand got injured and it hurt him too much to place it on the neck. he quit electric and went on to playing classical guitar which hurt him less, but he disappeared from the music scene. A really sad story!
You are in my opinion the best guitarist in the world, you can do everything! Appreciate the hard work you put into the videos, they help me personally a great amount. Keep it up!
Mister Graham - your skills are incredible, and nice to have your vids available for sharing your talent to those of us that aspire for better playing ability. BTW - you capture Greg's style flawlessly. Always look forward to your next vid entry. Rock On!
0:00 - 0:13 Oh shit, I'm so hard right now. Since you're starting with Greg Howe, can you please also do Richie Kotzen? And then maybe Greg Howe/Richie Kotzen in one? :D
I remember those magazines from the 90s. I was really bad and had trouble learning it but it was still massively inspirational. I lived in the highlands and it was before youtube so it was the only learning resource.
Old guy here! I was fortunate enough to cut my teeth playing with greg and others (additional name drops withheld) on the east coast at local guitar shops on the weekend trying to figure out Van Halen and then Malmsteen licks and then taking it to the stage for weekend gigs while it was still on the radio during the late 70s (of course Malmsteen came a little bit later)before computers or tablature at least reliable tablature, you young whippersnapper's don't know how good you have it with a guy like Rick breaking it down for you, lol.
please please please do a play through of the full track. I can remember being in absolute awe as a 15 year old aspiring guitarist that anyone could come up with a track like this, let alone in such a short.....still bust out the intro almost every time I pick up the guitar even now ha ha
You are the best blatherer, and yeah learnt so much from guitar techniques with my dad, and always was blown away with Guthries stoned type voice then shreds insanely, was so confused
oooooh i could ask for loads, Darren Householder, David T Chastain, Impelliteri, Ronnie Le Tekro, Frank Gambale, Vinnie Moore, Joey Tafolla, ..omg i could be here all day :)
Rick do you like Danny Gatton? He was a fantastic country-jazz player, think you'd really dig him. Shred sensibilities but very careful phrasing and style
Great stuff, Rick. I still have a stack of guitar techniques magazine stored away I will have to dig them out. I wanted to ask a question as after watching this vid, I randomly watched your Satriani rendition of Time. I was thinking when you solo are you thinking of the actual notes, g b a etc or just going with feel and intuition?
Tony MacAlpine is my shred hero. Maximum Security is the best neo-classical shred album since slice bread to me. Gives us all you have on Tony please.Always liked Greg Howe too. Awesome technique only, the song structure he plays in isn't quite as exciting to me as Tony`s is.
Guitar techniques mag was too advanced for the average guitar student, that's why other mostly beginniner mags were more popular, I remember learning tunes by Scott mishoe, Brent mason and Shawn Baxter, a truly fantastic magazine
Great idea for a series, thanks so much for taking the time to put this together :)
Thanks for that comment bro!

they weren't underrated in 80 or 90 in anyway... the music industry changed that the biggest reason they "faded" away...

Oh man Vito's tapping is my absolute favorite, if only he would've never gotten injured
David Sim basically his left hand got injured and it hurt him too much to place it on the neck. he quit electric and went on to playing classical guitar which hurt him less, but he disappeared from the music scene. A really sad story!
The tapping passages that begin at 1:17 and 2:55 in "Super Unleaded" have always blown my mind - seemingly endless notes that are so so fluid.
I loved guitar techniques magazine! It was the go to source for guitar players and playing pre internet for me.
You are in my opinion the best guitarist in the world, you can do everything! Appreciate the hard work you put into the videos, they help me personally a great amount. Keep it up!
