    It's very important to note, using the normal Storage Spaces RAID where the disks are put together to one drive, does not work like the traditional RAID1. In fact it is more flexible. I had one drive die, that was bigger than the 2nd drive. Microsoft Storage Spaces had advanced enough as it is, moved the data to both drives in the way that the bigger drive that failed, could be replaced and no data was lost.
    It has a 'prepare failed drive for removal' process. Once that hits 100% completed you can then remove the drive and plug in a new one and 'repair the array'. With traditional RAID1 as you may or may not know, the disks must be exactly the same size.
    Currently running at 2TB and a 1TB together.
    I was much more satisfied with Storage Spaces once I experienced a real drive failure than I was in the beginning. It works great. Do keep in mind... if you use more than half the data of the larger drive, you will risk loosing some data, however. This is common sense. Try to use the same capacity size drives if using 2 or more, if possible.
    I'm a 17 years experienced IT admin

    Hi and how are you!? Thank you in advance in in sparing me the time of your day to look into mine, so here goes! I am interested in getting Microsoft Essential and I wanna know the down right basics of what to know about it and money wise as I would only wanna use it for home use and access outside of the home. I understand that yes ofc I'll have to buy it hehehe! but are there any fees should I be aware of other than just buying it outright from microsoft? are there yearly fees to be paid and do i have to pay some amount of money depending on how many cores I have? again thank you very much for the time you've put in reading mine, you and your time spent are greatly appreciated

    Another great video. I just created a storage pool on my Windows Server 2012 R2.
    To confirm, if I created a Mirror setup, with 2 virtual disks, and then decided I wanted a Parity setup, I'd have to delete it and start over, no?
    I tried to simply add to the Physical disk and Virtual disk, but no luck. Thanks

    i cant understant one thing. normally when we create raid in server, physical hdds are added in that raid group and this is what makes sense. in s2d we first add all physical disks to a pool and then create a virtual disk and then it asks what level of raid do we want. how does this raid work on virtual disk ? i mean we cant loose a virtual disk unless we loose a physical disk and in s2d we are making raid on virtual disk.

I'm about to start on a new project and that involves migrating from vmware setup to new hyper-v HCI setup, I wish to use S2D in a two-node setup, have just purchased hardware and licensing Windows Server DataCenter 2019, and now looking at ways of configuring it, do you have an email I could ping a couple questions over to you at. Have also subscribed as videos are very informative.

    why in the pool it can see up to 2TB (MBR) only. so if i try to use physical 10TB drives.. it only sees 2TB per drive. Does this mean it wouldnt support bigger than 2TB drives?

    • @NLBSolutions
      @NLBSolutions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bilal, I had to check the video once again to see where the MBR did pop up. This actually is my boot partition and it is with MBR format. The virtual disk is with GPT partitioning right below it.

      When I try your steps
      My 10TB platter drives show up
      But when I select all 3 in a pool
      It says the size will be 6TB (remember each drive is 10TB each) then why does it show 6TB total instead of 20TB with parity or 30TB without parity

    • @samithaqi2379
      @samithaqi2379 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MBR can support only 2 TB drives , you need to chose GPT that will support more then 2 TB drives

    I am trying to do this in a vmware environment. I've got a VM up and configured for File Server. I've tried several sized disks but at the moment I'm testing 2 500GB disks and trying to set up a storage pool. I've tried several options when assigning the disks to the server ie: thin/thick provision, independent/not independent etc...Tried formatting both standard and dynamic and GPT/MBR. Whatever I do i'm getting the following error during the pool set up:
    Physical Disks:
    The drive cannot find the sector requested.
    It does this for as many disks as I have assigned to the server. The back end storage is a Dell Compellent SCV2000 at the most recent firmware/software versions.

    • @NLBSolutions
      @NLBSolutions  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeff, interesting scenario you have there. When you attach the disks to the actual server do you format the disks? Did you try to create volumes on them and see if they are accessible? I assume they are LUNs presented from your SAN?

    RAID 5 DESTROYS disks. I have lost more data with RAID 5 than with any other RAID type (including no RAID at all). A single disk with no fancy redundancy (in my experience) is far more robust than RAID 5. RAID 1 is fine because it tends not to abuse the physical hardware like RAID 5.

    • @NLBSolutions
      @NLBSolutions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing your experience, Gizmo.

    • @brianwengel6894
      @brianwengel6894 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      RAID5 is not for protecting your data, you use backup for that. RAID5 protects you against a sudden disk failure. When a disk fails, the first thing you do is to make a fresh backup, then you can start to rebuild your storage.
      No users has lost their data :-)

    • @GizmoFromPizmo
      @GizmoFromPizmo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      But when rebuilding the array after you replace one failed disk causes multiple simultaneous disk failures, you lose the entire array. There are articles about this phenomenon on the internet so I don't need to go into detail. Suffice it to say that the higher the single disk capacity of the array, the MORE likely you will experience a failure. In other words four 500GB disks are less likely to fail than four 2TB disks in a four disk RAID 5 config. I've experienced catastrophic failure of RAID 5 arrays using Adaptec, LSI, and other RAID controller manufacturers. RAID 5 is a big disappointment.

    • @nopenottalib4366
      @nopenottalib4366 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +@@GizmoFromPizmo - You know, if I had read your comment just one year ago, I wouldn't have believed you. But, I actually had a server that the RAID card in it failed. I was able to pull everything off it before it actually failed completely ... but when I resurrected it a year later to repurpose it for a different service, I encountered a phenomenon I haven't seen before. First I replaced the failed RAID card. After that, when I booted it the server up I noticed that I not only had ONE failed hard disk, but TWO.
      In any event, I replaced the two bad disks and it's been fine ever since ... but what are the odds that TWO disks would fail at the same time?! It actually makes me wonder if the old card took those drives out with it ... or maybe both drives failing took out the RAID card. I'll probably never know.
      Ya, it's no longer using RAID5. I'm using RAID 1+0 on it now. Horrendous loss of disk space ... but at least I still get the speed of RAID5 but with the ability to lose 2 disks without losing data.

    This video does not explain how to create a Pool on one machine and import the Virtual disk onto another machine. That's what its used for and you completely missed the point. You just created a pool, create a disk on the same machine which is useless.
