  • In this video series I am going to implement and configure networking with Windows Server 2016. In the second video from the series we are going to implement DHCP. DHCP can help to automatically assign IP addresses to client devices in your network.
    Part 1 - Installing and configuring DHCP.
    Part 2 - Implementing DHCP Failover.
    Part 3 - Migrating DHCP.

    Nick, I have been in the I.T. field for nearly 40 years. Although I have never worked in the area of networking I have been some what involved with DNS and DHCP on the servers I supported as an administrator. I was never really able to grasp the big picture of who all this fits together until today. God Bless you Nick. You truly are the best hands down instructor I have ever heard. You truly have the gift of teaching and explaining complex areas and simplifying it to the masses. I wish I had known about your videos a long time ago. I am 61 and currently unemployed but have regained the confidence thanks to you go get back out there and competed with these youngsters lol.

    Thanks Nick for the video, your explanation is easy to understand and follow. I'm stuck at one issue and need your help. I setup a home lab using VMware workstation player with two virtual DC and two clients. When i give static ip to the clients from the same subnet it all works fine but when i configure a DHCP server on DC1 and make the client to obtain ip automatically it gets the ip from my physical host subnet but not from the scope which i configured on DHCP. I spend two days trying to resolve this issue but no luck. your help will be highly appreciated.

    @17:50 before activating the scope, it would be advisable to ensure this Dhcp server is the only one in the specific vLan it is going to be turned on. Domestic routers very often have Dhcp turned on by default, and you don't want 2 dhcp servers unaware of each other on the same network

    • @NLBSolutions
      @NLBSolutions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Carlo, this is a very good point. You would have a very angry DHCPs if they are on the same vLAN.

    Your presentation was great and easily understandable and please allow me to ask you one question regarding a network and that is a network topology or better yet how can we determine or if need be predetermine the topology of our network bearing in mind difference between physical and logical topology first if we have virtual network comprised of 2 domain controllers for redundancy one VM acting as a router with VPN role on it and one client machine? Thank you very much for your explanation

    When I assign my Server VM a static address it loses internet connection. The DNS and static IP are both the same IP. The networking is setup through NAT. It's a Windows 2016 server.
    Does the static IP of the Server have to be within the DHCP scope range?

    I am creating VMs in Azure. I configured the DHCP and created the scope, created a ClientVM in the same subnet and virtual network as the DHCP server, but the client is not getting the IP address from the scope I gave. looks like its getting it from Azure default DHCP. How can I fix this? Thank you.

    You set a scope from 10.0.0.100 - 10.0.0.200. Is there any reason after that to set an exclusion from 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.99? I mean it's only useful if my scope is 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.200 and the exclusion is 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.99 right?

    Great videos. I will like to know, one thing. Are you using a virtual machine for your windows server2016, or is it a bare metal installation. will configuring a DHCP affect your modem? I am using VMWare workStation inside windows10. I have an installed window Server 2016, and one of those server has Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP, I have already configured DNS and Active Directory I am just worried that If I configure DHCP it will mess up my LAN. Any advise on using the VM for this lab? I know Microsoft advises against using multiple service in one Machine. Thanks

    • @NLBSolutions
      @NLBSolutions  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Christian, you will need to isolate that environment. Depends what you want to achieve, but if you use NAT for your servers they should be ok. If you do not need Internet access - host only.

    You have configured everything with a private IP, so when and where Public IP comes into play?

    • @NLBSolutions
      @NLBSolutions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi vinny, public IP will not be configured with DHCP in most occasions using Windows server DHCP. You can configure public IP DHCPs when you are an ISP for example but with different utilities.
