Hey everyone! Just as a heads up, I won't be looking at comments until I've had someone go through and check for spoilers! As before, please don't take it personally if your comment gets deleted. 🤍
Jayne lives by the gun. And he was offering to trade his very favorite gun - and one of his most effective - for the girl. That’s actually a big thing.
I think part of Jayne's "charm" is that he is completely genuine. Yeah, he's not a particularly good person, but he never tries to convince you otherwise. At the end of the first episode when Mal asks him why he didn't turn on him, he just point blank tells him that the money wasn't good enough, and then he goes on to imply that some day it might be. Not once did he try to convince Mal that it's something he'd never do. And then there's Simon. He hasn't liked him from the very beginning and has never pretended otherwise. Even though it doesn't seem particularly bright to be on the wrong side of the guy that you might need to save your life one day.
“Mal’s quite lovely in a lot of ways.” What a wonderfully true, well said statement. 😉 I loved your quiet chuckles all the way through this one. And I agree with you about Jayne! I saw “the trade” the same way; endearing in a sincere, boyish kind of way. The whole interaction was hilarious. Mal eyeing him with a healthy respect of what Jayne was capable of with that gun in his hands; to relief mixed with incredulity that he wanted to trade it for Saffron; to talking to Jayne like a child with the double entendre of “Go play with your rainstick.” This whole episode was comedy gold.
I love how Zoe thinks it's SO FUNNY at first. But her intuition kicks in before anyone else clues in. All of these characters become more and more layered, and I love them more with each episode.
I think that she was low key worried because Mal wasn't acting like himself, annoyed by Saffron's servile domestic persona, and bothered that Wash was impressed by Saffron's skills. I feel like it was less intuition that Saffron was a bad guy and more that the interpersonal relationships of the crew were thrown off because of her.
Jayne is like the ships attack dog. He is rough, aggressive, and not very bright, but there is a certain sweetness to him when you get to understand his character. Like an aggressive dog, he needs a firm hand and exercise, because if he gets bored he makes a mess, but you have to love him.
What Jayne lacks in book smarts he makes up for in being absolutely brilliant at what he does. I'm 1/3 of his mass (maybe less) & not near as stealthy under ideal circumstances. Also, I have no trouble believing that he can tell the difference between someone talking to him direct & what's coming through a transmitter (like when Mal was standing right next to him). Attack dog is as good an analogy as any. He's very protective. And the sweetest drunk ever. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
21:30 the look on Inara’s face when she realized how obtuse Mal was, thinking she’d kissed *Saffron,* it perfectly caps off a pretty humorous episode. Saffron’s introduction to the crew always makes me laugh.
Amazing episode, from the hilarious wagon scene to the heartwarming celebration to the Saffron awkwardness and twist, ending with Mal's final bit of cluelessness. Kudos for getting and appreciating it.
Always love to see Jayne grow on people. Like many scenes, the lines are written to show a character displaying their worst and best traits at the same time. I think the key to the Vera trade scene is the line (and Baldwin's delivery) "Well, I'll protect her." He does seem completely sincere as he says it (like a kid asking for a puppy) and there's no doubt that he would protect her and treat her as best he could.
Fantastic. Great reaction to a really good & fun episode. An even better episode to watch reactions and you certainly didn’t disappoint. Thank you for sharing. Also, excellent thoughts after. Spot on analyses of the plot points & characters. Looking forward to your next.
" i'm becoming very fond of Jayne. " Everybody starts off with, " That guy's a jerk." Or worse. Somewhere along here he grows on you. Of course, so does fungus. Tiny spoiler- He has a very strong character arc coming up. We, all of us, I think, come around to, "Well, he's Jayne. He's kinda the black sheep of the family, but he still IS family."
A Nigerian reactor recognized the marriage ceremony immediately, so it wasn't hokum. My question was how did "Saffron" insinuate herself among those townspeople, since she wasn't actually one of them. I can only figure that during the party the townsfolk were wondering, "Who is that woman who crashed our party? Maybe she's from the ship."
Never see anyone react to the widow comment. Have to admit I didn't notice it for the first few times either. Adam Baldwin's character as Jayne was written and acted so well. The progression is perfect.
Jayne is a funny case. He is at best a bit of an oaf, but there's zero hypocrisy about him - he knows perfectly well what he is and is even a bit ashamed of it, even if he doesn't quite aspire to be better and it puzzles him why anybody else would.
Hey there! I really enjoyed this reaction. Your reserve and Analysis do you credit. I'm really hoping that the next few episodes give you the opportunity to really let out a full-on belly laugh though. I think that would be something to see, as it is something I have not yet seen on your reactions. Have a great day
Your comments about Jayne are right on target, though I'd never thought of his character that way, but "innocent" or naive are excellent descriptors (in part) for his complex make up. You are about to get more insight into Jayne, as in the title of the next episode....
I took a page from Jayne's book, named my rifle Vera. I even put an Independents flag patch on my rifle bag, along with a patch saying ,"It is my favorite gun. I call it Vera", and one that says, "Shiny. Let's be bad guys!"
"Yeah, well, I'd be a terrible husband. And you'll have 6 whole days to figure that out." Mal knows exactly what he is. That's what makes his character so endearing. He has flaws and accepts them.
By the notifications, you can see I've been whizzing through these episodes, I'm having a blast. That you've discovered Jayne's soft side is delightful, there's more to see, and knowing that you've finished the entire screen experience means it's no spoiler to say that the oddly sweet mercenary asshole is in reality a Mamma's boy, who takes care of his family above all else, and I'm weirdly happy you noticed this side of him so early. It's nearing midnight, so I'll finish my binge tomorrow - hope the string of comments brings a smile.
the girls of triumph wait to be married off for trade, so in that spirit jayne tries to trade for her. i wonder if he regrets not doing any trade back on triumph.
Jayne does grow on you, over the series. I think at the start he was the least popular character... By the end he's built out a lot better... Mal thought Inara kissed Safron because she's demonstrated her disdain for Mal that he thought it far more likely that she'd kiss a girl before she'd kiss him...
"Our Mrs. Reynolds": Jayne has a "powerful ugly" wife, bandits are taken down, celebration leads to a lot of alcoholic consumption, Jayne gets a Rain Stick but Male gets a wife!? The crew is amused/horrified/concerned about "Saffron," Shepherd Book issues a "Special Hell" warning, "Saffron" makes dinner for Mal. "Saffron" takes out Mal, moves on to Wash, messes up the ship controls, and tries to seduce Inara before taking the spare shuttle. "Serenity" is heading for a scrapper's web, Jayne and Vera see action, Mal catches up with "Saffron," then movies on.
Don't let the folks who are utterly revolted by the technical stupidity about Vera get under your skin. I'm sure they'll be along in a minute. Long ago, I was one of them but, over time, I've resigned myself to it. For the record - Firearms don't require air to work. Even if they did, after the first shot, Vera discharged successfully several times, long after all the air would have been gone from the suit. Just another scene written by someone who knows nothing about firearms.
Though if you want to get really picky, zero air pressure, no air for heat transfer and freezing cold could easily cause problems, especially with finely machined automatic weapons. It would probably work for at least one shot, but I'd probably prefer a bolt-action or revolver for vacuum unless the gun was specifically designed for that.
If Vera uses standard bullet cartridges, yes, there would be enough oxygen trapped in each cartridge to support the combustion reaction of the gunpowder. If Vera uses caseless ammo, though, then it's going to depend on how airtight the firing chamber is.

"I swear by my pretty, floral bonnet I will end you." 20 years later I still love that line. It still gives me a little chuckle.
Jayne lives by the gun. And he was offering to trade his very favorite gun - and one of his most effective - for the girl. That’s actually a big thing.
I love the progression from "Jane is a jerk" to "I'm becoming really fond of Jane." He has an oaf's charm.
In the follow on novels we see that Jayne and Mal have very similar back stories. Before Mal went to war of course, Jayne did not.
The Jane conundrum is credit to the quality of writing in this show. It is just so, so well done!
Great reaction for a fun episode. Christina Hendricks is an excellent actress.
To be fair to Jayne, Vera really is his favorite gun, probably the most valuable and treasured thing he possesses. 😂 And he's very mercenary himself.
“Mal’s quite lovely in a lot of ways.” What a wonderfully true, well said statement. 😉
I loved your quiet chuckles all the way through this one. And I agree with you about Jayne! I saw “the trade” the same way; endearing in a sincere, boyish kind of way.

This whole episode was comedy gold.
"That's why I never kiss 'em on the mouth..." That line and the crew's reaction to it are classic!
Great reaction. Firefly is one of those rare shows were the casting is perfect. I love everyone on Serenity.
I love how Zoe thinks it's SO FUNNY at first.
But her intuition kicks in before anyone else clues in.

@@maddwitch Good point. Probably didn’t see just how bad she was, but knew she had the potential to be a disruptive force among the crew.
One of my favourite episodes of any show ever.
I think your observations about Jayne are very astute and indeed this is a favourite episode to many fans; it's very funny.
Jayne is like the ships attack dog. He is rough, aggressive, and not very bright, but there is a certain sweetness to him when you get to understand his character. Like an aggressive dog, he needs a firm hand and exercise, because if he gets bored he makes a mess, but you have to love him.

"Zoe's going to kill you" LOL
21:30 the look on Inara’s face when she realized how obtuse Mal was, thinking she’d kissed *Saffron,* it perfectly caps off a pretty humorous episode. Saffron’s introduction to the crew always makes me laugh.
" I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you." The only more memorable line, IMO, is "I aim to misbehave."
Amazing episode, from the hilarious wagon scene to the heartwarming celebration to the Saffron awkwardness and twist, ending with Mal's final bit of cluelessness. Kudos for getting and appreciating it.
"Night, Sweetie."
Said so softly and sweetly. But so chilling.
Always love to see Jayne grow on people. Like many scenes, the lines are written to show a character displaying their worst and best traits at the same time. Absolutely agree with you on Jayne's line there. I think this is the scene that really made me look at him in a different light.
I love how much you laugh in this episode.
I'm still waiting for the perfect real-life opportunity to say "I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you!" 😅
Aren't we all? 😂
Such an enjoyable one, so many good comedic quotes.
Fantastic. Great reaction to a really good & fun episode. An even better episode to watch reactions and you certainly didn’t disappoint. Thank you for sharing. Also, excellent thoughts after. Spot on analyses of the plot points & characters. Looking forward to your next.
Thank you! 😊
And there's the Mal-Inara kiss everyone was hoping for lol.

"I only hit my head is all!" Inara really is great in this one.
I really liked Jayne from the very beginning, but that might be because I was already a fan of Adam Baldwin. Maybe my biases are showing. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
His wife is probably the most frighteningly evil characters on TV . . . Also very pretty and funny too . . .
Never see anyone react to the widow comment. Have to admit I didn't notice it for the first few times either. Adam Baldwin's character as Jayne was written and acted so well. The progression is perfect.
So true. It takes both writing and acting to make a jerk lovable. In fact, Mal can be quite the jerk too. But we love our Captain.
There are two kinds of people in this world, those who fall for Saffron's charm, and those who do not!!
I must have watched this episode half a hundred times and still gives stitches just can’t stop laughing . . .
I laugh way too hard at this episode 😂
The kicker is, every time I’ve seen it, which is way too many times.
Jayne is a funny case. He is at best a bit of an oaf, but there's zero hypocrisy about him - he knows perfectly well what he is and is even a bit ashamed of it, even if he doesn't quite aspire to be better and it puzzles him why anybody else would.
I've always felt that Mal knows what happened but he likes the game they play; plus he can't give in to his feelings for Inara, he'd lose his freedom

legend has it that Inara is still rooted to that spot waiting for that kiss.
I swear this is my favorite opening to any show ever, of all time. [edit] actually i think this is just my favorite episode from a tv show ever lmao.

Juuuuuuuuuuust wait.

Can't stop the signal!

I almost did a choked on my soda when you said "Whats wrong with Jayne?"
Man I was really waiting for you to get to this episode
How did Morena Baccarin get to be so good at the age of 23? LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts and a BFA in drama from Julliard.
Zoe; always watching Mal's back.
Jayne innocent ? Best comment !
Next episode is my favorite. Hope you like/liked it ( assuming you already watched it by now)
Great reaction. Please watch a sci-fi show called Travelers when you're done with Firefly. It's awesome. Thanks.
Ooh, I'll add it to my list! Thank you! 😊
Thank you. I can't wait.@@andelain
So, "innocent" Jayne, and Inara beneath the veil, as it were. Glad you're enjoying it.
