    It's my very first RC model of a beautiful little Sopwith Camel in scale 1/24 from Microaces. The material is very light weight and printed with authentic decor - almost like a plastic model kit.
    I'd like to thank my friend Stefan Schacht for bringing my little camel to life on its first maiden flight.

    Wonderful. I have built just about all of Jon's Microaces kits and always hoped you would do a build for them. You really got the feel of building one of these up to the static display. I have got to get some of those pilot figures now! I guess installing the RC gear is a bit too fiddly to video but these kits are definitely engineered to be flown as you have here. The flight segment was really well shot too. Bravo!
    Regarding the flight handling I would say the little Sopwith Camel is one of the more challenging to trim out. Mine benefited from a bit of extra weight in the nose and it flies with quite a bit of down elevator trim. But fly they do! As you can see all that trimming is not absolutely necessary. Dawn patrols (or in the setting sun) in calm weather are always a beautiful sight.

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fortunately a good friend of mine controlled the flight. For me it would have been too tricky 😅

    • @dickiedick100
      @dickiedick100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed you can see in the flight that the point of gravity is to much to the back..... but as you already mention some weigh in the front will make the flight of this beautiful plane more realistic and easier. 😉

      The SE5 is my favorite, back in the early 1960's I had a control line model of one that my dad built and I was playing with it in our front yard, I could not have been more than 6 of 7 at the time and an old guy that lived a couple of blocks from us that walked by our house just about everyday saw me with it and stoped and said that he flew the SE5 in WWI he told me that it was a pleasure to fly and that it was one of the best airplanes that he had ever flown. I told my dad and the next time the old guy came be my dad went out to talk to him and they must have talked for over an hour. They would talk just aboult every time the old guy would walk by. I wish I could talk to the old guy now I am sure he would have some good storeys to tell.

    Wow Tom that was great.... (I missed the RC bit in the title)...I would have made loads of these when I was younger..... When I was a kid I used to get my pocket money on a Saturday and go into town and buy an Airfix kit...... Make it in a hour or two and splash some paint on the outside....No point doing to much detail on the inside as no body would see it....I have seen some of your serious videos that must take days to film, where you spend hours on the details inside the model that will never be seen....Why?? I made a Model of a Mercedes 350 SL Gullwing... I spent a lot of time on the Chassis and Engine then put a Body on it...And it hid all the great work I had done... So I made more Motorbikes because you could see all the details...What are you thoughts..... Big fan as you know.... :-)))

    • @TomGrigat
      @TomGrigat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it's the major problem of our hobby. We're investing lot of time in detailing just because we like the origin background, the technique and eventually hide everything under a surface so nobody can see it any longer. But we as creators know. I think it's the process that counts and the fun of building. The video documentation is the chance to prevent the details from hiding at last. My personal way to let it still be seen what is hidden...
      Thanks for your hint regarding the headline. I'll change it. Best regards, Tom

      The model is still tail heavy and must be corrected soon. I haven't found time to work on it since 😅

      @TomGrigat hey Tom figure out the c/g yet?
      I added 5g to my nose and it's still tail heavy.

    You built a very nice model from a unique and clever kit. However, for many aerodynamic reasons, the smaller the R/C model the more difficult it and twitchy it will be to fly, with very few exceptions. Small R/C models seem to flit around like mosquitoes at hyper speed and, at least for me, are therefore very unsatisfying.
    We may reduce the size of airplanes, but air molecules and how they act on solid surfaces remains the same.

      I completely agree. Impressive kit and a nice bit of fun. But it flies like a butterfly and its totally unconvincing in the air.
      (Its worrying that kits this small may end up being about the only RC planes available as regulations bite).

      @@stevep4131 You may be right, but hope that doesn't happen.
      I was interested in small scale R/C models for a while but soon realized that below a certain size, they just could not be made to fly, as you said, "convincingly", to say the least. I have a bunch of really nice ones, some really tiny, just sitting on a shelf now. Such a pity because they really look nice, but fly like shite.
      In R/C, bigger flies better.

    Making a video clip is more difficult than making a model.
