- How to do a Backflip / Back Tuck Tutorial | Flat Ground
For all you gymnasts, traceurs, freerunners, bboys, tumblers, cheerleaders, and trickers, here's a short, detailed tutorial on how to do a backflip or back tuck on flat surfaces like grass or concrete. Getting over the fear of a back tuck is difficult, but it can be accomplished even without a trampoline. In general, backflips tend to rely more on technique rather than on power and weight. Hopefully, this tutorial will teach you how to learn a back flip. :)
Good Luck!

Thanks man! I really appreciate the feedback haha. I will definitely make some more tutorials! I definitely agree with you though. Most of the stunts and tricks I learned were through online videos. :) Good luck!
Legit stuff man. I learned this today. They're a lot of fun and they scare the crap out of me.
Denise Ionescu If you have it on the spring floor, you should be able to do it on the grass. :) Try getting a friend to spot you so you have that "security". That's what helped me out when I first started. After you get comfortable, you can try doing them without a spotter. When it come to throwing your head back, try looking at something in front of you, a little bit upwards, then look at that object for as long as you can before looking backwards to spot the ground. Hope this helps! Good luck! :)
I can't tuck whenever I try an do the flip I land on my back what should i do?
me too
nooby gamer
I recommend just practicing bringing your knees to your chest before proceeding with the flip. Do several reps of just jumping and bring your knees to your nipples, grab your shins, release and extend to land. Repeat this without flipping, just jumping. Then proceed to the flip when you get used to the motion of tucking.
I can do a front flip but not a back flip more paractices makes perfect!!
Great tutorial. You hit on all the key techniques of doing a backflip. I've been trying to find a tutorial to show my friend and this is the first one I've found that's most in-depth. Keep it up!
He makes it look so easy and I really wanna try it but I know if I try I will die
NastyGamer I tried I still here I recommend a mat or pillows

Just look up a vid of it
I'm sure you'll get it the first try
It's for your body to get used to the motion of flipping backwards
Rela same
Best tutorial yet. Much respect 🙂 I am gonna try
This really helped me advance from a back handspring to a back flip. I can do it after a round off and stick it. Thanks so much :D
Hey man! I actually learned it on the trampoline first. After getting familiar with the motion on a tramp, I then had a friend spot me on the ground. After he spotted me once, I was able to start doing them on my own. It was really useful in breaking my fear of doing it haha. Hopefully this helps!
This is the best how to backflip video I've seen, cheers!
Thanks bud!
This tutorial is great! Both informative and entertaining, I think you should definitely continue with some B-boy, parkour, and tricking tutorials. As a new tricker myself, the internet is probably one of my better resources, so keep it up!
In my opinion this is the best backflip tutorial I’ve ever watched because it only took me 5 minutes thanks Christopher
Hey man I finally was able to get it and it was awesome, the biggest trouble that I had was actually having and confidence and throwing it, your instruction helped a lot

Your videos help so much thx for making these vids 🙂
I am thinking about starting to learn how do a backflip and this video really helps me get started. Thanks!
great stuff Chris!! Thanx!!
Hi Christopher Tung, Your explanation of the back tuck, although laconic, touched upon all the bio mechanical points concerning the progressions needed to master that particular skill. The video footage is synched perfectly to the movements, and links concrete to conceptual information wonderfully. Personally, I stand 5'9," and weigh 204 lbs., but still can manage to get a standing back tuck off a trampoline, and do the same off a tumble track with three bounces. My difficulty is timing my vertical--fortunately, I tuck well, and spin fast enough to compensate for my subpar jumps. I'm close to accomplishing the skill; however, others are far from their objective, and would benefit greatly from viewing this upload. Take care, QP
great tutorial! it looks really professional. you definitely got yourself a new subscriber!
Your backtuck is actually so good especially comparing to other tutorials !!

best back flip tutorial!!!! thanks
If you don't have mats, I would recommend finding a gymnastics center near you that offers open gym. Otherwise, grab some old pillows or an old mattress and have a friend spot you! Good luck! Stay safe!
That gave me a lot of help. thanks!

I was wondering, I can front flip, side flip, cart full, cart to side flip, almost front handspring to front flip, working on websters and losers, and I can standing high jump pretty dang well. After I get over a minor setback injury, how well ought I to do this on my first try? I need confirmation from somebody who's good at it to know if I still have high chances of landing on my head or not. My basic tricks and tumbles should gather my strength, but would it be just as any other person in retrospect?
Samuel Walker u should first practise back rools and using your legs
Dude, I do back roll pikes. Do you know what those are?
Rawiri Edmonds k
hey I've been trying backflips for a while and have been doing many off of things such as tables concrete blocks and bails but I can't seem to get the height for a flat backflip and my form is decent to say the least it might just be a height thing seeing as I'm only 13 and are 5,2 but I'll keep trying great vid love your style

I saw you in Connors channel you have amazing vids man
Thx so much i leard it!
100%subscribed
bro this video helped me so much keep it up bro
Thanks man! I appreciate it! Yeah, If you are trying to take off more vertically, staring at something when you take off for as long as you can (setting) will help a lot! But, one thing that helped me a ton was I thought of doing a gainer (don't actually do a gainer). Instead, when you backflip don't squat backwards before taking off, jump straight up and push your hips forward during the backflip. I hope this helps! Good luck! I'll check out your channel haha. xD
My first try is perfect! It's really amazing
You're a great teacher
Wow that is the most perfect backflip i've ever seen.
Spending my night judging peoples back tuck tutorials for teaching people wrong, but this one's actually good and had good explanation and demonstration! The only other thing I'd have mentioned would be gaining rotation by throwing hips! But a good tutorial nonetheless!
Thank you you really helped me out thanks!!!
:):):):)
So good!!!!
thanks so much i was looking for videos to do them higher Nd you helped thanks

Your the best fliper in the world i learnd backflip from you
thank you so much for helping
wow, thx you actually helped me to land! well i was struggling with the landing but tysm
I certainly believe it's possible! Once I had a standing backflip on a trampoline (which is really quite easy), I was able to quickly learn a standing backflip on the grass with the help of a spotter (in one day). So definitely! Just be safe and don't push yourself too much to where you get injured. Good luck! :)
Thank you for the help
Haha, thanks! I hope it helped!
Hey man! I would probably recommend that you have some back flipping experience, whether it be on a trampoline or spotted on the ground, so that you have a basic understanding of what the movement feels like. But, It you are feeling confident and have some mats, feel free to give it a shot! :) I don't have a front flip tutorial out atm, but I'll add it to my to do list haha.
Thanks u just helped me land my first backflip!

Christopher Tung i cant bring my knees to my chest
Christopher Tung just tried this with a bed on the floor and landed off of it and now my knee is swollen😂😭😫
Christopher Tung I'm opening up too much and I think that that's what makes me not able to tuck in enough do you know how to fix this I'll pot a video on my channel so that you can see my backflip in slow motion. Thank you!
Christopher Tung try doing a summy tuster
Hey, thanks for the great tutorial. I've gotten to where I can land on my knees onto a mattress. I find it hard to throw my arms up and tuck at the same time. Either I can tuck, but my arms don't throw up. Or, I throw my arms and I don't tuck very tight. I feel like if I can just get both of those motions down together, I'd land it. Any tips?
Wow very fast and easy explanation
Yo I’m not even gonna lie you helped me in prove my backflip so much
