- In what was one of the most memorable Merseyside derbies of recent times on this day in April 2001, a Gary McAllister winner saw the Reds win at Goodison Park for the first time since 1990. Goals, missed penalties, a red card and a late, late winner - this game had it all.

McAllister was one of the best buys deals we ever had, especially through those years. This goal, which if memory serves really put us on the road for Champions League qualification, the penalty against Barcelona in the UEFA cup semi and then his performance in the final were pivotal. Absolute legend. And people thought he was past it and laughed when we got him.
And it makes up for missing out signing him years prior too
I'll never forget the Kop singing "What a waste of money" when he retired.. We got him on a free lol
Now MacAllister (Alexis)
Here after found the very sad news, just want to see that Gerard Houllier’s reaction after Macca goal again. RIP Gerard Houllier 💔💐
R.I.P. Gerard Houllier. That expression was priceless. Liverpool fans should thank him for setting the foundation for the Liverpool of today.
I forgot he was gone 😔
Thanks a short fruitful French Revolution at Anfield
Houllier brought Liverpool back from the wilderness of the 90s and laid a foundation for future generations
At 4:51 Gerard Houllier face is like young child witnessing his first derby win, iconic scene.
that face makes this goal so special honestly
McAllister had 2 glorious years with us, amazing memory
Imagine if we had had him throughout the nineties
He was James Milner before James Millner in this era of LFC. Great veteran signing
Remember though that Gary Mac turned us down earlier in his career and chose Leeds instead. But he made a huge impact and helped Steven Gerrard in his development.
That Everton penalty was such bullshit
In all honesty, both of them were.
Everytime I feel a little down, I came back here to watch Big Mac's wonder goal, plus the angelic beaming of dear Monsieur Houllier.
THIS is the one i've been waiting for..Garry Mac and his famous FK... I remember that when he scored this i jumped up out my seat and hit my head on the corner of a shelf... never been so happy to be bleeding..YNWA
ouch! lol
Emile Heskey
Used to assist and open path for michael owen sprint to the ball and score tons of goals
What a partnership
Roberto Firmino dreams of becoming an Emile Heskey
Heskey used to be good man. But injuries and KSI didnt help his reputation
Very underrated .
He was a beast
Can we also appreciate Dietmar Hamman. The catalyst of the first two goals. What a player
Great memories! Also shows how bad and self absorbed Jeff Winter was as a referee. Awful decisions throughout the game
Another one of those 'I should be the star' referees.
I was six months old when this game happened. Describe Jeff Winter for me. Both those penalty decisions were bollocks if you ask me.
Don't forget Howard 'MUFC' Webb..
One of my best memories of being a Liverpool fan for 40 years was Gerard Houlliers face when Gary Mac scored that free kick. RIP Boss and thanks for putting us on the road to recovery.
McAllister put in some awesome displays for Liverpool that season
Can remember exactly where I was that day - in a pub in Windermere, Lake District with lads on an all day bender
96 RIP
I was listening on the radio when McAllister scored. Those were the days
Liverpool fans "We've had a man sent off, Everton have just equalised, and are pressing for more....what are we going to do?"
Gary Mcallister: "Hold my Irn Bru."
Jeff Winter....shocking decisions.on the pens. Hyppia pen was a disgrace
“Your sweet right foot”
Garry Macca’s boldly head!
Hi,i'm The Reds From Indonesian:)
pooly tunes is d best every side of al timez
I can remember where I was that day in the main stand what a game how Gary macalister only got two years at Liverpool is beyond me!!! It was great to see Gerard houllier with a great big smile on his face
In slaters in town when I watched this, what a great day, Mcallister’s goal has always been my favourite derby moment
Check the tickets in my wallet
Then swig a cup of tea
7.30 in the morning
One game from Wembley
Out the door and on the street
Off to meet the boys
To sing the songs we love to sing
And fill the ground with noise
The coach pulls up and we all pile on
Belly full of butterflies
Then off to sheffield we all go
The FA cup our prize
9.00am and the songs have started
I talk about the game
To a young lad thats sat next to me
I didn't catch his name
The journeys taking hours
And we cross the pennine hills
But my mind drifts off to hillsborough
As i dream of beardsleys skills
"My favourite players Aldo"
Says the boy sat next to me
His eyes full of excitement
And his words are filled with glee
"I'm meeting me mate when i get to the ground"
"He's travelling up by train"
"I'll see you back here on the coach"
"When we've beaten forest again"
The coach pulled up and off he went
Going to meet his friend
I check my ticket once again
THE LEPPINGS LANE END
Its getting near to kick off
And i'm getting close to the ground
But nobody seems to be moving
I'm stuck tight in this crowd
I'm just starting to panic
And a bizzie opens the gate
A red tide moves down the tunnel
Moving closer to thier fate
I remember clearly that tunnel
And the light shone at the end
And as i think back to that fatefull day
I still cant comprehend
That the coppers called us vandals
And drunken loutish liars
And the media fed us spite and hate
When compassion was required
But back to that day and the things i saw
Unfold before my eyes
The sight of grown men screaming
And the air was full of cries
But i was one of the lucky ones
Because i came home alive
I watched heroes in scarves on the pitch
Trying helplessly to revive-
Their friends their family and strangers
Who'd all come to watch a game
But their lives were crushed that fatefull day
On a terrace called Leppings Lane
The memories still haunt me
Every time i go to sleep
But theres one memory that gets me
And always makes me weep
Back on the coach with my head on the glass
I remember my heart it skipped a beat
When i turned to the young lad next to me
And noticed his empty seat
There were 96 empty seats that day
96 friends that we lost
And while Kelvin counted the pennies
The families counted the loss
So next time you're at Anfield
Visit the eternal flame
Feel the stone cold marble
And touch a persons name
And while you say a silent prayer
And your dreams are tossed and blown
Remember those 96 empty seats
That must never walk alone
i remember this like yesterday, was a Monday night game watching it on 14 inch TV in Addis Ababa, Ethiopa, how time flies great memory tho. YNWA!!
You'll never walk alone !! Be safe
McAllister was James Millner in those era of LFC. Best veteran signed LFC ever made
2000-01 season, what a lovely football year that was for us Reds, nail-biting FA Cup Final against Arsenal. One of the best finals I've seen anyway, Arsenal fans thought they'd won it until a certain Michael Owen had say in affairs. Finished that season 3rd in the league and still won three trophies (Uefa Cup, Fa Cup and League Cup). R.I.P. Gerard Houllier YNWA.
Liverpool never lose ⚽
Uhm uhm...
Gray Mclaster success every free kick corner and penalty his not miss amazing and wonderful full man ❤️
Never a pen. Neither
Finally on You Tube in the best quality! What a game, what day! "oh, Gary Macca!"
4:44 great goal
Gary McAllister fooled everyone with that free kick, what a beauty and he was around 36/37 here. RIP to Houllier
I never realised before how many yards he stole. The foul was more or less just outside the centre circle LOL
I hope new Mac Allister will shine
I that first goal 🤯🤯😱
I’m relying on memory alone here so I could be wrong but is the referee Jeff Winters? Either way... that penalty decision against Hyypia marking Duncan Ferguson was absolutely laughable!
That first goal was pure delight! 🤩🔥
JUSTICE FOR THE 96 x
I remember watching this with my mate and my dad who are both utd fans, my Dad was screaming at the TV cause of the 8 or so yards extra McAllister took for the freekick 🤣🤣
who else misses the reds play?
like if u agree
Old Gary was one of Houllier's greatest signings
Came here after klopp started calling alexis gary...lol
Serves them right especially that pillock who fouled vignal needlessly 😂😂😂😂
Houlliers face is priceless after that winner
Ged's face after Gary Mac's goal is everything.
Oh can't stop loving this great club 😍😍
Like si fue mano la primera jugada!!
The last time goal 'wow'
Gary Mac with that amazing free-kick. One of my all-time favourite goals. Absolute class player.
Anyone recall the atrocious minute’s silence before this game? Hillsborough 12th anniversary. Some dhead shouted something unintelligible after about 3 seconds, some other dhead shouted for him to shut up and then it just disintegrated completely. Ref wisely blew his whistle after about 15-20 seconds. Dont know who the original idiot was attached to but either way it was very sad. Saddens me to this day tbh. I hope the Queen gets better treatment this week.
1 year later Anelka scored his incredible goal but Houllier was like a Devil for not extended Anelka's contract.
That goal by McAllister and Grerard hauiler smile! priceless
REDS....
rest in peace the 96
Best Strong Teams

That free kick NEVER gets boring (unless you're an Everton fan of course). By the way, Everton got awarded the softest penalty EVER!!
I loved this team! It’s the one I fell in love with when I first became a Liverpool fan. Looking back, some of the football looks pretty scrappy tbh!! Terrible call on the penalty too.
Heskey's opener would not count nowadays... would be chalked off and a penalty given at the other end for Carragher's hand ball!
Back holiday Easter Monday Pub was full of reds what a Derby YNWA. RIP Gérard.
4:50 that Gerard Houllier smile is what made McAllister's goal so much more special
wat a goal by mac wooooooow
I remember watched this live great goal by Gary in the final minute.
Guys u know it wasn't the right decision, penalty i mean right? The first one
Neither penalty should've been given if you ask me.
@@youngdolo8 I dunno some refs put a penalty because of players pulling each other down
I’m very very bored
Please one love
Watched this for Gary memories, but good to remember Richard Gough, a class act and Scott Gemmill always 100%, decent Toffees team too. The Blues’ time will come.
Liverpool ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️💋
Say what you like but Heskey was great for Liverpool.
Communteter Steve banyard the god gift phenomenal voice

I thank Gary mac...not for his play on the field...but for his influence on Stevie.....I believe he has a large role to play in what Stevie became as a player.....
That moment and look on Gerard Houllier's face at 4.30
Priceless !!!
After the terrible sad news yesterday, we cherish the memory even more.
Rest in peace Gerard !!!
unsworth not even touched by Biscan. Pillock
Nobody gonna talk about the awful refereeing???
A proper Derby match... Great stuff... Obviously better if you're on the winning side! 😬
With that defense, Everton deserved to lose. Lol😂
R.I.P Gerard Houllier . We as the reds are thankful for your service. Dance with the angels

Remember this live .
What a player he was what a free kick .
I remember him in the europa cup final he was phenomenal
Got handed man of the match award by Johann Cruyff! Boy’s comic dream stuff!!
12
Still trying to figure out after all these years how Gary Mac did that. 20 other players on the pitch and not a single one of them thought it would be anything but a deep floater into the box.
But Gary had other plans.
I'm no expert and I know some fields are longer and some are wider than others, but he looks about 40 yards out. I'd have to hit a ball twice to get it that far!
he kept waving them to go further back and it drew the keeper out towards them - totally deliberate and the best free kick you ever see
Rip Gerrard houllier. My favourite memory. 🙏
Big Nev 🚮 would of saved the free kick 😁
YNWA!
biscan never touched him
Bruh
RIP houli
RIP Gerard :(
