Listening to Van Halen on an Alpine car audio system back in the day took the music to a different level.

You really need to hear Van Halen's debut album. It's right up there with Boston's debut.

Big words but you might be right. They made everyone everyone look like dinosaurs when that came out. Not just the album but the energy with which they performed it live. Famously, legendary and experienced bands of the time were terrified of following them on the stage.

I agree. She’s already done Boston’s debut. I would suggest Ed’s live solo video here on TH-cam. Also Van Halen Women and Children First, a very underrated album.

Most of us probably remember having our minds blown when listening to amazing music for the first time. You can only have that first time experience once. I think that’s one of the magic parts of your channel. We can never go back and have that first time experience again, but the next best thing is to watch someone else’s first time experience. So the fact that you never heard the music before is what makes it special. Don’t apologize for not knowing the songs ahead of time. None of us did either that first time! Definitely listen to their previous stuff because this was the first record Ed played synths on. Hopefully friends your age are also learning about this music through you! Great channel Verdy! Keep going! 🙌

Michael Anthony on bass is critically underrated, he and Alex Van Halen on drums really hold it down to let Eddie go off. Also Anthony has the hi pitch in the harmonies with Eddie. The expression when the instruments come together so seamless is TIGHT.

FOUR KEYS TO THE VAN HALEN SOUND: DIAMOND DAVE’S SCREECHING WITH WHOOPS AND HOLLERS EDDIE’S GUITAR 🎸 ALEX’S SNARE DRUM 🥁 AND MICHAEL ANTHONY’S STRATOSPHERE BACKING VOCALS!!!
VAN HALEN: I SAW ALL THE TOURS WITH ROTH FROM VAN HALEN 1 IN 1978 TO 1984 AND AGAIN IN 2013! I SAW 5150, OU812, FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE AND BALANCE WITH HAGAR. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER EDWARD VAN HALEN!!! RIP EDDIE
My favorite Van Halen tour shirt is from this tour-Fair Warning. The band on the front with Worldwide Tour on top and 81 with a circle ⭕️ around it on the bottom and world tour 81 on the back with the VH LOGO and Van Halen written in the logo!

  • @garylagstrom3864
    @garylagstrom3864 ปีที่แล้ว +10

For the layered effect at the beginning of the song, Alex Van Halen strung together four bass drums. The rest of it he played using two. It is a great example of double bass drumming. The album was the first recorded at Eddie Van Halen's 5150 studio.

    • @correctlyrics

I think it's funny how Alex had to use electric drums because the studio wasn't finished and they didn't have space for his full drum kit, so he could only record it with electrics.

Eddie was trained as a classical pianist as a kid and had a very respected old school classical musician teacher who he fooled. Eddie couldn't read music (it was boring to him) and played Bach, Beethoven music etc., from ear memorization and even won a major piano competition. Think about that. He was a musical genius, and an innovater who changed how rock guitar can be played for generations myself included. His drummer brother Alex wasn't half bad either.

  • @swordmonkey6635
    @swordmonkey6635 ปีที่แล้ว +3

"I'll Wait" was Edward's guitar homage to Eric Clapton, a big influence on Edward. He wanted a slower, blusier sound for the song to pay tribute to his hero. The Doobie Brothers' Michael McDonald helped David Lee Roth with the lyrics, which shows in the song being more of a story than Dave's usual loose bumper sticker quote to bumper sticker quote writing style. Dave still has his mark on it by having the song being about him falling in love with a centerfold model. lol

If you get the chance.. one group I'm sure you haven't heard of is "Cactus". 2 songs of theirs stand out from their first album. "Parchman Farm" and "Oleo". If you'll indulge me... I'm a lifelong Van Halen fan and extremely mediocre lead guitarist. Eddie was my hero. Obviously I wasn't worthy of stringing his guitar, few were. I tried my best to play their songs. In my best estimations I could achieve maybe 40% accuracy at 50% speed, or 10% accuracy at full speed. 😅
But there was this one day when the planets aligned, I can't explain how or why, but one day in the practise rooms of my local studio, I was jamming with my band and we fell into House of Pain, the last track on this album. The hot chick that worked there had offered us coffee and left the room to fetch it just as I started playing the opening riff...
I had mastered this basic riff, including Eddie's little doodles, and was making a decent job of it. As we got the solo, something I was far less confident with, I had my head down, taking a deep breath to compose myself to cling on to the structure of it as best Im could, when I sensed the door open, complete with the smell of coffee...
With all the adrenaline of a young wannabe rock star in a red leather jacket with the sleeves rolled up, trying to impress a pretty young lady, I threw myself wholeheartedly at it; this barnstorming, freewheeling solo. And I know it's a solo that sounds somewhat improvised, but as far as I could tell, I was studio accurate or better, if such a thing was possible...
I was just caught in the moment. I could feel all eyes on me, and for the first time in my life, I felt like I had finally achieved something as a guitarist. I felt ten feet tall. I felt like a guitar God. And what a moment for the Gods of Rock to shine their golden light on me, just at the moment to impress this gorgeous girl....
As I brought the solo to it's conclusion, I looked up to lock eyes with her. It was her brother. 😒
Side note: My moment of supreme skill was a one-off. I remain at best mediocre. 🤣

One of the reasons you might like the drums (besides Alex being a legendary drummer) is that he was using Simmons electronic drums for his toms. He had a traditional cymbals, snare, bass and floor tom, but the drum "sound" of 84 was the Simmons kit and his snare.

Eddie got writers block on the second track, "I'll Wait", so producer Ted Templeman, who also handled the Doobie Brotherrs, brought in their big gun, Michael MacDonald to help Van Halen out of a deadline jam. The result nearly caused a lawsuit (it was settled without litigation) because Michael wasn't given any songwriting credit on the album.
Eddie appeared on a couple of uncredited tracks in his career, once with Nicolette Larson, listed as Guest "?" and again, more famously with Michael Jackson. I think maybe he took outside work less seriously, doing it to be generous, not to get paid, so perhaps he thought that was how it worked with other musicians? Not everyone can afford to work for free, and he probably shouldn't have, but then we'd never have these crazy stories.
Great reactions! Keep digging into the VH catalogue. It's a gold mine!

Eddie's Lamborghini Miura S was recorded (exhaust tone) for Panama not Hot For Teacher unless they put it in the Video for HFT but it is not in the studio version.

I didn't hear "Drop Dead Legs " the first time until around 2013. Was born in 1959. Was a teen all through the 70's. Loved R&R. Remember when
Van Halen I came out. Shook up us rock and roll kids [ although I was 18 when it came out, I was a " kid " as far as music went ]. Had a nice album collection. All of the now iconic albums - Meddle, DSOTM , WYWH , Animals , TW, LZ I , II , III , IV , HOTH [ their best album ? underrated? ] , PG [ their best album? not underrated ! ] , LSOHHB [ great album -- know it? ] , Aqualung , TAAB , Fragile , CTTE ...
But I got saved in 1980. Had a family. Would listen occasionally to secular music as I jogged or on the car radio or at someone's house. But gospel was my thing then. Was going to city college in the
2010's. Drop Dead Legs came on the radio on my way to class. I was like -- what? Who is this?
This is a great song! I didn't listen much to rock anymore, but this song was so good that I was thinking this must be a new song because I would have heard it before if it wasn't. It took me a while to discover who made the song because I didn't catch the maker of the song or it's title before the song began on the radio. Even with Google.
It definitely had a VH groove to it. That's how I found the song -- sampling songs on Google off
of VH albums. It went immediately to my playlists
and to the top of my list of VH songs. Made my jogging trips seem even more quick.

Does Ed play bass on girl gone bad? I have a hard time believing that was Michael Anthony playing that awesome 🅱assline.

Girl Gone Bad is my favorite song off 84, Van Halen's foray into prog rock at the beginning with the arpeggios and Alex's complex drumming. Plus as Dave said, the song has the best outro of any song in rock history.

Crazy good year for rock albums with different sounds. I could be wrong but think this album and Purple Rain in same year. Fairly sure I was listening to Red Sails in the Sunset album by Midnight Oil in the same year at school. Funny hearing Hot for Teacher for first time in awhile. There was a bit of Rockabilly style in that song that never noticed consciously before which seems so different for Van Halen.

Only 2 bands: Van Halen & Led Zeppelin have 6 consecutive albums this good right out of the gate. You've listened to #6, now the 1st 5 are must listen:
    I
    II
    Women and Children First
    Fair Warning
    Diver Down

This album was the pinnacle of the DLR Van Halen years. I can only imagine where the music would have gone after 1984 if Dave had stayed. Instead, they took a more pop direction with the next singer, Sammy Hagar. It was very good in its own right, but definitely a different direction than if they had built on 1984. 1984 had such depth to it, from the pop oriented songs like Jump and I'll wait, the down and dirty of "drop dead legs" and "house of pain", and good time rockers like "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher". 1984 had it all!
While other comments have suggested VH1, I would work your way backward (skipping Diver Down, lol) through their catalog. Each album is interesting and different from the previous one.
