    I travel overseas by air extensively, but I still use my passport card constantly! The passport card is the best ID to show when flying domestically (to airline agents and TSA). The passport card proves identity and citizenship, but it does NOT have your home address, organ donor status, or other personal information that you might not want to reveal to airport staff or have compromised/stolen. Also, by showing your passport card, you keep your other IDs safely tucked away. If you lose your passport card, just apply for a new one after your trip. However, if you lose your driver license or passport book, you are in for much more headaches to replace them overseas, and in the meantime you cannot drive if you lose your license!

      Would it be useful for a pocket id for alcohol and leave my passport at home? I was surprised at how many places in Mexico City carded me and wanted my passport and would not accept a Texas ID. I was in my 30s too!
      In Shanghai, I thought it would have been useful at least, so I wouldn't have to carry my passport.

      @@lazyoldtexassun Many US states also won't accept other States ID/Licenses for purchasing alcohol or smokes or anything else that is age restricted. The state I am in requires the the ID to be issued by either this state or a bordering state.

    I personally got my passport stolen. It was a major pain in my ass!!! At the time I didn't have a passport card. I now just applied for my new passport book and without a question I payed the $30 for the card as well as normal passport. It's invaluable to have an id similar to a passport in which most people want to see, instead of carrying around your book (Note: passport book should be protected with extreme care) Having a passport card you have some proof on citizenship and most likely will not get harassed. I think having a card is no doubt worth it.

    I use my passport card to cross between the United States and Mexico routinely, often for work or for vacation. I always keep my passport book with me but packed away. I was told by a US border agent that the card is not good to identify myself with an official other than a US border agent. So, if I needed to identify myself to a Mexican official I would need to show my passport book. The passport card is very convenient to carry in my wallet when traveling across a land border crossing.

    I have both the passport book and card. Traveling by car between Canada and US the card is convenient. When traveling by air in the US I use the card at airports and with the current political climate, it proves citizenship. Traveling outside the US and Canada, I keep the passport card on me as well as a copy the passport book. I also take a photo of any entry stamp(s) for the country I am, if needed before I am able to provide the actual passport book.

    It's a cheap add-on when you're renewing the book, so it's worth it to me. My CA driver's license doesn't expire for a few years, but it's not a real ID, but I also don't want to carry around my passport book just to board a domestic flight.

      Yep, I'm about to get a passport card with my passport book renewal. I believe the card will be very helpful on domestic flights since it is Real ID compliant. My current license from State of TX was issued in November 2015 and I am supposed to renew it in November 2021. Unfortunately the TX DMV started issuing Real ID licenses in October 2016, just 11 months after I got my current license. So I'm looking at October 2020 to November 2021 where my current license will not allow me to get on domestic flights. Passport card solves it!

    I have a driver's license that will soon not be accepted anymore to enter federal buildings. They say I should renew my license early just to get a REAL ID.
    But with the passport card I don't have to renew my license early; I just use the passport card instead. It was well worth the few extra dollars I paid when I got the book to get the card as well.
    I had an incident a few years ago where somebody asked me for a government ID and then when I gave them the passport card instead of the state driver's license they were expecting they said, "Where's your driver's license?" as if to imply the passport card wasn't good enough.
    Since I was walking not driving and they didn't need to see a license, my response was, "This is FEDERAL, it's issued by the federal government. That means they scrutinized me more than they do for just a license."
    The other person's response was "There's no address on it." I said, "Exactly. I never give out the address where I lay my head at night anyway. You asked for a government ID, I gave you one. It has a magnetic strip just like the driver's license."
    The only thing they could manage to say after that was "Oh."
    But just like I told them, I never give out the address where I lay my head at night; you never know who might decide to scam you or do you some other kind of harm. It's just not a good idea these days because you just never know.

    When I renewed my passport book a few years ago, I also got the passport card. At the time, the price was around $30-$35 for a new card. I’m not sure if I would pay $65 for a new one now. I use it mainly as a secondary ID, but I’ve used it once to cross a land border. I heard that having a passport card can make the process of obtaining a replacement passport book from a U.S. consulate/embassy easier, but I have never had to try this! In any case, I would make color photocopies of the passport book and carry those.

    I think the passport card is going to be very nice to have for DOMESTIC flights when the Real ID stuff becomes effective in October 2020. My current drivers license was issued in November 2015 and my state began issuing Real ID licenses in October 2016. Having a wallet size passport card from the Federal government that is Real ID compliant is a nice way to get around the Real ID crap at the state level. Passport card is good for 10 years. $30 seems like a good deal to help deal with all the Real ID stuff on domestic flights for the next decade.

Also if you live in a state that hasn’t met real ID compliance it will get you on a plane without a problem. Found this video, I have an appointment Monday to get a passport, I haven't left the United States since 2008. I was only going to get it because I'm only a few hour drive from the Canadian Border. I have had a passport but it expired 9 years ago so it isn't eligible for renewal and I only needed it once and showed it at the Canadian Border a few times, before it was required. because I'm considering the cost of a family of 5, the cost savings between the cards and passports are substantial.

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessarily. It’s calculated risk. I’m more worried about having my passport stolen. It really depends on where I’m traveling. In Madrid, I’d probably feel ok about leaving my passport in a secure place. Though in other places where there might be more police corruption, I might be more inclined to carry all my documentation on me.

    I always thought a passport card serves as an ID card if required to carry one while abroad. Use the passport book to enter and leave a country and the card as ID if required to have one on you constantly while abroad or to check in for a domestic flight within another country.

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  ปีที่แล้ว

      I used it that way as well (or carry a photocopy of my passport in my wallet). I think most countries officially require visitors to carry their passport with them at all times, but I haven't seen that enforced during my travels. Though it may be better to err on the safe side!

    Not relevant to me as I'm not a US citizen, but one thought occurs to me based on my experience on cruises (in Europe). It may be the case that the traveller's plans might be to only travel by land or sea, in which case a Passport Card would suffice. But what about the possibility of a significant problem that requires the trip to be cut short, perhaps because of illness or injury to the traveller, or perhaps a problem back home that requires an immediate and fast return? As I understand it, only having a Passport Card would prevent the traveller from returning home by air in that situation; they'd have stay on the ship (possibly for days!) or return by land, if possible. I've occasionally seen cruise passengers in Europe have to urgently return to the UK by air, for example.

    • @TripAstute
      @TripAstute  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a great point! It's always better to be prepared for those types of situations. I definitely think it's worth carrying a regular passport book to be safe! 👍

Plus it saves me at least a half day’s work by not having to fill out forms and go to the DMV.... The enhanced here in AZ is $25 a year; so I save $190 over the 10 year life of the card... As you mentioned it does depend on your specific situation; for mine the Card makes sense and Dollars... No pun intended...
