I got it last summer when my DL expired. I had to take half day off to get it. DVMs are always busy. 1) You are not required to get it. If you don't fly or don't mind bringing your passport when flying. For Californians, must show real ID or passport to fly after Oct 1, 2020. 2) If you plan to get it, you have to go into a DMV and bring 3 forms of identification (DL/ID, social security card, and bank statement or utility statement). Make an appointment if you don't have time. 3) The cost is the same.
A friend of my mine was refused access to his bank account at Wells Fargo in N.C. because he didn't have a Federal Id. I personally think the bank teller was wong. Is this a big mistake? He did have a regular state issued driver's licenses.

I am in CA and went to get the real ID and they asked for a second proof of residency on the spot, even though the website at the time only asked for one. Luckily I had my insurance documents in my glove box and went out to grab them.

You can’t get into military bases with REAL ID! My wife works inside the base and I try to get in, in order to drop her off. The officers and soldiers don’t even know what REAL ID is. I told them, I thought I can enter with a REAL ID. They laugh and say, you better have a real id or else you’ll be in trouble.
I'm not surprised to hear that. I have a veteran designation on my REAL ID, and it definitely does not let me enter any military bases. I still have to use my old military ID. 😄
Here in Malaysia, every info is in our ID CARD. We use our ID CARD as a passport to enter Singapore and it started many years ago. I applied for a REAL ID DL in California this year. I set an appointment on the DMV website and showed up an hour before I was scheduled. They took me right away and the process was fine for the most part. The only snag I hit was on the proof of residency. They requested at least 2 different documents. I had only 1 on hand, but then they asked if I had my car registration (this works for proof of residence). Thankfully, I did, so I ran to my car and grabbed it. It all worked out from there. It pays to save correspondence relating to your bank/credit cards (not the offers/invitations, but the ones you already have) with at least relatively recent dates leading up to the application. On a separate note, for my DL and passport photos, I like to dress up in a suit. And I mean full suit. If you wear only the top, you might feel self-conscious. Plus, if you’re wearing a full suit, you’ll have an easier time exuding confidence that you’re a professional. My rationale is that you’ll be stuck with the photo for the next 5 years (10 for passports), so you should look as presentable as possible, even if only a small part of the suit shows up in the photo. But this is just my approach. You should do whatever you’re comfortable doing.
Yeah, I've heard similar stories from friends as well about not realizing the multiple proof of residency documents. It's confusing too since they just changed it to two this year, which I think it confused a lot of people.

If your license expired, you're probably in the same boat as me. I didn't have the option to get a REAL ID driver's license the last time I renewed, so mine is non-compliant (and I would guess your license may be as well). When you get back to the US, you'll want to visit the DMV and bring all the necessary documentation to get your updated license. Though keep in mind that you don't have to have a REAL ID driver's license since you can still use your passport as your REAL ID. Having a REAL ID driver's license is more of a convenience. 🤓

For the record, I HATE this!! Second, I am one who does not have a birth certificate. My birth certificate is not valid, in that my first name is not listed. My middle name is listed as my first name. My parents never fixed it, so the name I have had forever is not mine. I have tried and tried to ask the board of records for my birth certificate, but they say it can't be found. So what do I do?

It's a good question. I have yet to get my REAL ID compliant CA drivers license. I would imagine that renewing an established REAL ID should be possible via mail, especially during these crazy times.

All of these videos leave out the most important verification! It's the Proof of Legal presence or citizenship. There has to be a very specific type of birth certificate. It cannot be just the short form birth certificate. It must have the names of both parents present. It must also have a raised seal or colored seal. Yes, a US passport can also be used but the passport also requires the same above stated birth certificate.
What do you do if your homeless but still want to fly to see family? I have no resident documents . My license has my old address before being homeless? Does this mean homeless people living in there cars can’t fly? I know many.
When I got to the DMV to get the real ID waiting on the line they told everyone to go on the website to DMV.gov to register once you go thru the question they ask from you at the end they will give u a code number take a picture of that code number then when is time to see the worker for the paperwork they will ask for that code number then they will start to check if everything is ok then you pay 28.00 after that they will send u to take the picture since I am a senior I also took another picture for senior ID that one is free 😬
Green cards are REAL ID compliant, so it should work. The only exception could be an older green card. I believe they did a refresh of the design about 3-4 years ago, but I'm not sure if the older one is still compliant.
It’s possible that you may need to get a new license if the card doesn’t have a REAL ID symbol or logo. I recommend checking your state’s DMV site to verify whether your license is compliant.

I'm temporarily living in the greater Toronto area, Canada, for business, and know many people, both in New York and Ontario who have these. The primary purpose this was done, was to eliminate the need for frequent US and Canadian travelers in these border regions to always carry their passports with them (For example someone who just wants to drive across the border to go shopping, or visit a friend).

Enhanced IDs meet the requirements for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (like passport cards), which is more secure than Real ID. Questions what if somebody is coming from Germany, Italy, Russia, Mexico and there coming to La, Chicago, Washington, Florida what gets done then? or if there returning home what happens now. If you live in Germany you can't go to a Dmv in Chicago what happens now? My license should be fine correct I've been to Ireland and Florida and no problems yet?
A passport (both US and foreign) is considered a REAL ID, so anyone visiting should be ok. Also, you'll want to check your driver's license just to be safe. Since the rule doesn't officially go into effect until next year, you might still have an older license. That's what I have, and it should work until the rule is implemented.
My MA Driver’s Licence doesn’t expire until 2022. Should I renew my Licence early since I might travel or need to enter a Federal Building after Oct 2020.
It might be worth getting it now. Though the only concern I would have is having to go to the DMV during the pandemic. Since the REAL ID requirement has been extended to at least Oct 2021, it might be worth waiting (to reduce any unnecessary exposure, especially at crowded DMVs).

No, the REAL ID driver's license or state ID will allow you to board domestic flights. For international flights, you will still need a standard passport book. Though a passport book or passport card (which can only be used for specific land and sea entries) are both REAL ID compliant.
The review status has been resolved. The DMV sent out letters to anyone that renewed prior to April 29th. All they need to do is sign the letter if it's the same address provided at the time of applying for REAL ID. Please note that if the person uses a PO BOX - they need to provide 1 of the 2 residency documents need to have BOTH the PO BOX AND a Physical Address on one of them. The other may have either address.

No, you still need a passport. The REAL ID is not meant to replace an actual passport. There is something called a Passport Card which can be used instead of a passport book for certain limited scenarios (e.g., border crossings into Mexico and Canada), but I still recommend carrying and using a traditional passport since it gives you the most options.

You should check with your local DMV. For California (where we're based), it requires an actual visit to the DMV to show all the documentation before they will issue you a REAL ID.
SS# is not for purposes of ID. Already presented Birth Certificate when I applied for my first driver's license in the '60's. My SS# WAS my DL# til they advised against it. I'm going to say "no" to their little gold star. I don't need no steenking "real" ID. All I need is my DL. Oh, you forgot two pieces of mail verifying your address.
What you didn't mention is that your birth certificate has to have a registration number on it. Mine doesn't. My husband's doesn't. But our city of birth will be glad to send us one for $28. Also, you better not have laminated your birth certificate OR your Social Security card. Unacceptable!!!! Lord forbid that you laminated these important docs to keep them from being damaged.
It's false I'm in Baltimore Maryland and I was required to get a real ID when I renewed my license and I said I wanted a regular license because I have a passport and they said I'm required to get one no exceptions.

I think it depends on your DMV and your state's regulations. When I got my REAL ID drivers license last year, I did not have to do one. Though I did have to get one a few years ago when I was renewing my drivers license.

My California Drivers license expires in October 2021, and most likely it will be "renew by mail". I'll be damned if I take a day off, just to wait hours and hours at the DMV, and then another couple days to gather all the documentation needed, just so that I can use my license "to board a plane" (rollseyes). As it is, I had to waste a whole day, to go personally to the DMV to take a new updated picture, back in 2016 when I had to renew. Besides, I always carry my passport with me no matter where I travel! It is good that they give people an option, and don't force it down your throat!!

I don't think it's correct. A passport, by default, is a REAL ID. You will only need a REAL ID to travel domestically (without a passport).

I applied for a REAL ID DL in California this year. I set an appointment on the DMV website and showed up an hour before I was scheduled. They took me right away and the process was fine for the most part. The only snag I hit was on the proof of residency. They requested at least 2 different documents. I had only 1 on hand, but then they asked if I had my car registration (this works for proof of residence). Thankfully, I did, so I ran to my car and grabbed it. It all worked out from there. It pays to save correspondence relating to your bank/credit cards (not the offers/invitations, but the ones you already have) with at least relatively recent dates leading up to the application.
On a separate note, for my DL and passport photos, I like to dress up in a suit. And I mean full suit. If you wear only the top, you might feel self-conscious. Plus, if you’re wearing a full suit, you’ll have an easier time exuding confidence that you’re a professional. My rationale is that you’ll be stuck with the photo for the next 5 years (10 for passports), so you should look as presentable as possible, even if only a small part of the suit shows up in the photo. But this is just my approach. You should do whatever you’re comfortable doing.
Yeah, I've heard similar stories from friends as well about not realizing the multiple proof of residency documents. It's confusing too since they just changed it to two this year, which I think it confused a lot of people.

If your license expired, you're probably in the same boat as me. I didn't have the option to get a REAL ID driver's license the last time I renewed, so mine is non-compliant (and I would guess your license may be as well). When you get back to the US, you'll want to visit the DMV and bring all the necessary documentation to get your updated license. Though keep in mind that you don't have to have a REAL ID driver's license since you can still use your passport as your REAL ID. Having a REAL ID driver's license is more of a convenience. 🤓

My birth certificate is not valid, in that my first name is not listed. My middle name is listed as my first name.
My parents never fixed it, so the name I have had forever is not mine.
I have tried and tried to ask the board of records for my birth certificate, but they say it can't be found.

Do you have any other form of federal ID? I think you can use a passport, for example, to prove your identity.

Once you have a Ca. Real ID drivers license, does it automatically come in the mail when renewing online or by mail? I got mine last year and was told that I have to renew my drivers license this September.
It's a good question. I have yet to get my REAL ID compliant CA drivers license. I would imagine that renewing an established REAL ID should be possible via mail, especially during these crazy times.
Why have all this REAL ID confusion when the U.S. could just have a federally issued Compulsory National Identity Card like they have in Europe, where 1 ID is all you need for everything and have Driver's licenses as a supplement to the main ID.
It's a valid point. Though Americans, in general, are very suspicious of federal ID programs (or anything managed by the federal government). It's not right or wrong, but it's part of the US culture. 😐

All of these videos leave out the most important verification! It's the Proof of Legal presence or citizenship. There has to be a very specific type of birth certificate. It cannot be just the short form birth certificate. It must have the names of both parents present. It must also have a raised seal or colored seal. Yes, a US passport can also be used but the passport also requires the same above stated birth certificate.

What do you do if your homeless but still want to fly to see family? I have no resident documents . My license has my old address before being homeless? Does this mean homeless people living in there cars can’t fly? I know many.

It might depend on your state. It seems like every state has different requirements to prove identity and residency.

When I got to the DMV to get the real ID waiting on the line they told everyone to go on the website to DMV.gov to register once you go thru the question they ask from you at the end they will give u a code number take a picture of that code number then when is time to see the worker for the paperwork they will ask for that code number then they will start to check if everything is ok then you pay 28.00 after that they will send u to take the picture since I am a senior I also took another picture for senior ID that one is free 😬

Green cards are REAL ID compliant, so it should work. The only exception could be an older green card. I believe they did a refresh of the design about 3-4 years ago, but I'm not sure if the older one is still compliant.

It’s possible that you may need to get a new license if the card doesn’t have a REAL ID symbol or logo. I recommend checking your state’s DMV site to verify whether your license is compliant.

I'm temporarily living in the greater Toronto area, Canada, for business, and know many people, both in New York and Ontario who have these. The primary purpose this was done, was to eliminate the need for frequent US and Canadian travelers in these border regions to always carry their passports with them (For example someone who just wants to drive across the border to go shopping, or visit a friend).

But in the end decided to go with the REAL ID or standard ID instead because it's cheaper to not put RFID chips in the cards. (which are required for enhanced ID)

Enhanced IDs meet the requirements for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (like passport cards), which is more secure than Real ID. Therefore, Enhanced IDs are Real IDs, but non-enhanced Real IDs won't work for crossing borders.
Questions what if somebody is coming from Germany, Italy, Russia, Mexico and there coming to La, Chicago, Washington, Florida what gets done then? or if there returning home what happens now. If you live in Germany you can't go to a Dmv in Chicago what happens now?

A passport (both US and foreign) is considered a REAL ID, so anyone visiting should be ok. Also, you'll want to check your driver's license just to be safe. Since the rule doesn't officially go into effect until next year, you might still have an older license. That's what I have, and it should work until the rule is implemented.
My MA Driver’s Licence doesn’t expire until 2022. Should I renew my Licence early since I might travel or need to enter a Federal Building after Oct 2020.
It might be worth getting it now. Though the only concern I would have is having to go to the DMV during the pandemic. Since the REAL ID requirement has been extended to at least Oct 2021, it might be worth waiting (to reduce any unnecessary exposure, especially at crowded DMVs).

No, the REAL ID driver's license or state ID will allow you to board domestic flights. For international flights, you will still need a standard passport book. Though a passport book or passport card (which can only be used for specific land and sea entries) are both REAL ID compliant.

The review status has been resolved. The DMV sent out letters to anyone that renewed prior to April 29th. All they need to do is sign the letter if it's the same address provided at the time of applying for REAL ID.
Please note that if the person uses a PO BOX - they need to provide 1 of the 2 residency documents need to have BOTH the PO BOX AND a Physical Address on one of them. The other may have either address.

No, you still need a passport. The REAL ID is not meant to replace an actual passport. There is something called a Passport Card which can be used instead of a passport book for certain limited scenarios (e.g., border crossings into Mexico and Canada), but I still recommend carrying and using a traditional passport since it gives you the most options.

When I flew from Reno home I got to use it and only had to take out my phone and wallet. It was so nice and well worth it since I got it free with my SPG Luxury card. You should check with your local DMV. For California (where we're based), it requires an actual visit to the DMV to show all the documentation before they will issue you a REAL ID.

SS# is not for purposes of ID. Already presented Birth Certificate when I applied for my first driver's license in the '60's. My SS# WAS my DL# til they advised against it. I'm going to say "no" to their little gold star. I don't need no steenking "real" ID. All I need is my DL. Oh, you forgot two pieces of mail verifying your address.

What you didn't mention is that your birth certificate has to have a registration number on it. Mine doesn't. My husband's doesn't. But our city of birth will be glad to send us one for $28. Also, you better not have laminated your birth certificate OR your Social Security card. Unacceptable!!!! Lord forbid that you laminated these important docs to keep them from being damaged.
It's false I'm in Baltimore Maryland and I was required to get a real ID when I renewed my license and I said I wanted a regular license because I have a passport and they said I'm required to get one no exceptions.

I think it depends on your DMV and your state's regulations. When I got my REAL ID drivers license last year, I did not have to do one. Though I did have to get one a few years ago when I was renewing my drivers license.

That is correct. When I filmed the video in April 2019, it was slated to take effect in 2020. Though that's now been extended to at least 2021.
I recently moved and got the real ID. Major pain waiting in line at the DMV. You need so much documentation to get one! At least it's good for eight years.

My California Drivers license expires in October 2021, and most likely it will be "renew by mail". I'll be damned if I take a day off, just to wait hours and hours at the DMV, and then another couple days to gather all the documentation needed, just so that I can use my license "to board a plane" (rollseyes). As it is, I had to waste a whole day, to go personally to the DMV to take a new updated picture, back in 2016 when I had to renew. Besides, I always carry my passport with me no matter where I travel! It is good that they give people an option, and don't force it down your throat!!
