"From Jerry's first solo album, released in 1972, Bird Song was an exploratory part of Grateful Dead live shows 1971-1973, after which it disappeared from the repertoire. To everyone's great surprise, and joy, it returned in September 1980, played acoustically at the Warfield and Radio City shows in the Fall of 1980 to celebrate the Dead's 15th anniversary. A month later, it returned to the touring setlist in its electric form, where it would stick around for the next 15 years." -David Lemeiux
It's a shame that this doesn't include at the end of the song, Bob saying "We're really having fun now." I love that moment as well as the slight smiles by Jerry and the look of Bob's face at the end at the end of the Jerry solo
Many years ago, my parents said to me “okay, you’ve been raving about this band, the Grateful Dead, for so long. Play us one song and we’ll tell you what we think.” I popped in this song, from the Dead Ahead release, into the VCR. The best, most beautiful representation of the band I could find. Their response : “this is boring.”
Had the same experience many years ago, on a road trip in New Mexico my folks said ok, put a tape in let's hear this stuff, Well 2-26-1977 San Bernardino Set 1 went in, their response ok pretty good!
Well then don’t watch Doc Watson, Richard Smith, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emanuel, or Chester Atkins. These players make me think my finger picking is no good.
Jerry i know you are still around ❣️ Jerry Bobby Bobby Jerry.. seriously this is a MASTER PIECE AND THANK YOU FOR this recording acoustic/electric ⚡ thanks for working so hard towards n to perfection every time yall play 🤍♾️💯 % sherry it rymes with Jerry Garcia 💃
Good lord, what an absolute stumble across Whoever uploaded this-->thank you!!!!!!Was looking for Bird Song, to send to a friend but,,,,,,,,didn’t know this was out there
Hunter/Jerry one of many masterpiece. So many live performances Phil plays it often, Bob play it tons with Dead and Co. Plays it with wolf bros too. I love all the versions, this one is unreal.. all the sudden everyone's like showed we get here.. Bob brings em back around Duane Alman said Jerry could walk on water.. but he was pretty fn high..
This is the best Greatful Dead Concert Ever!!!!...the Beat to this song is Fantastic 😎🌈...it shows we no longer have music 🎶...this Generation in 2022... will never have the Quality of this!!!!!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ACOUSTIC VERSION OF 1 OF MY FAVORITE SONGS ALSO ALTHEA, STELLA BLUE AND I CAN GO ON AND ON THERE ALL GREAT. BUT IT'S NICE WHEN YOU HAVE SUCH A VARIETY OF SONGS TO PICK FROM. JUST A LOT OF BAD LUCK AND WHEN I SAY BAD LUCK. MAN OH MAN THEY REALLY HAVE SOME KIND OF DARK CLOUD HANGING OVER HEAD. 😢 IT'S VERY HARD TO GET OVER THE LOSS OF ONE FRIEND AND A BAND MEMBER. I KNOW THAT THERE DEATHS WERE ALMOST A DECADE APART AND KEITH PASSED AWAY FROM A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT & IT WAS ALMOST A YEAR AFTER KEITH & DONNA WERE ASKED TO LEAVE THE GROUP. I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO VINCENT TO SLASH OWN THROAT WITH A SERRATED KNIFE THAT'S WHAT IS SUSPICIOUS TO ME. ANY WHO I SAID MORE THAN I THOUGHT I WOULD.
For many years, Bird Song was Hunter and Garcia's hidden elegy to Janis Joplin. In electric shows it was a high point to many first sets, and it was a mainstay of the band's acoustic performances in the early 1980's, offering a sweet, mournful lyric and frequently inspired jammin
The entire 10/31/80 show was released on video as "Dead Ahead" in 1981. The expanded version, released in 2005 contains 5 additional songs from the 10/30/80 show. 1 acoustic set song & 4 electric set songs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grateful_Dead:_Dead_Ahead
This acoustic version is beautiful, really showcases the magic of this song. We made our own version of bird song in case you want to check it out in our channel
Sure Jerry Garcia acoustic lead guitar and lead vocal Bob Weir acoustic rhythm guitar and vocals Phil Lesh electric bass guitar Bull Kruetzman drums Mickey Hart percussion Brent Mydland piano vocals
Yeah, because it (10/31/80) was shown live in selected theaters around the country. Some of it was used in the Dead Ahead video release, while much of 10/29 and 10/30 circulate among collectors, in the same pro shot quality .
Reckoning healed me.
What a beautiful, ethereal song. I've always loved it and it's wonderful that Jerry and Robert wrote it in memory of Janis Joplin.

Tell me, all that you know
Thanks David!!! and it just keeps on spreading that "great surprise and joy" ... dare I say, it's downright contagious!!!
Old friend gave me this on vhs. Now have on disc. Such a treasure. 🥀
God bless the Grateful Dead
What a wonderful acoustic,,,dreamy version jerry loos like a beautiful lion
Great song, great performance.
One of the many.Huntrr/Garcia masterpieces.. fkn brilliant song all the way.around
Loved Phil’s bass tone (and playing) on this. This was one of my favorite basses of his.
Jerry's eyebrows tell the whole story !
“They're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do.”
Seeing them at Radio City was one of the greatest moments ever.
It's a shame that this doesn't include at the end of the song, Bob saying "We're really having fun now." I love that moment as well as the slight smiles by Jerry and the look of Bob's face at the end at the end of the Jerry solo
Where can i see it?
@@LoboLopez64518 If you find the dvd of the full show. It's probably somewhere on youtube also
It's at the beginning Must've of Been The Rose's.
Ohhhh I love this rendition sooo much

Long Live the Mighty Grateful Dead⚡️💀⚡️
It's not every day you find Jerry in such good voice, very nice version, I was at Radio City for this tour.
I think Robert and Jerry wrote it specifically so anyone can sing it. Magic

Should have played them a romping '69 show
no accounting for taste.
Music is art.Sometimes people like it ,dont like it or they dont get it ! Ya?

If they knew it was about Janis Joplin they mite think differently. Depending on their age. Written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter.
This is simply extraordinarily beautiful!
Ensemble playing right here bro.
Saw two of the shows at Radio City during this run when i was 15. Great memories all these years later.
I saw 2 shows also! I was 17!
LONG LIVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD
My first show.
Every time I think I'm getting good at playing acoustic guitar, I watch Jerry do it and realize I am nothing.
Well then don’t watch Doc Watson, Richard Smith, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emanuel, or Chester Atkins. These players make me think my finger picking is no good.
It’s interesting how more involved vocally Brent is later on in 89/90 shows.
As you know, he was still very new to the band. Vocal parts evolve quite a bit over time and with trial and error.
@@sesquip6330 of course. It’s just interesting to watch this because I’ve been on a Spring 1999 kick lately. I’m a huge fan of Brent .
@@martyottmba Do you mean Spring 1990? Yes Brent was amazing. Never the same after he passed.
If only Spring 1999

😌😌😌 so relaxing. A fine acoustic Bird Song.
Always so glad when I had the chance to hear it live. I heard Stella blue 250 times, but this very infrequently.
I saw them do it at Giants stadium in 1992, great version they also did Terripan Station.

If you hear that same sweet song, well you know why.....
HAPPY BIRD DAY 2022!!!!
Could be their best Birdsong performance ever, including 1972.
It is right up there with their performance of this tune on 8-27-72 at the Olde Renaissance Faire Grounds in Eugene.
@@wheatleyducks Think this one is even better, the harmonies are CSNY level. Incredible...
