Excellent grooves, Kevin! Those soft stick hits with the odd accent, the shift over to hi hats during some brass sections etc - great orchestration. And nice banter by the trumpet player during the drum solo. :-)
FANTASTIC! Great groove - really swinging. Great band! (Wow, that piano player!!!) As for the set-up . . . I'm not even missing a bass player, let alone a bass drum! Alright, on my way over the full livestream. There goes the afternoon! Great work, Kevin! Keep these posts of your live music coming, please!
I dig the minimal setup! I am curious what hi hats you use for this, and also what characteristics I can look for in a pair of hi hats to play music in this style? Any helps goes a long way thanks!
These are 13" A. Zildjians from the 1950s, on the thinner side. I would say try to find some older Zildjians, maybe between 12" and 14", and make sure they're not too heavy. Thinner is better, to get the right sound. Hope that helps!
Hope you don’t mind me adding my 1.3 cents, Kevin. Lol. In case you can’t find or are unable/don’t want to spend the $$ for a pair of vintage Zildjians, I’d also recommend 13” Sabian AA Regular Hats. You could also check out the same size Sabian HH Regular Hats. They’re essentially the Sabian equivalent of New Beats and can often be found for less than the Zildjians…and the quality is obviously every bit as good. The HH version is obviously somewhat darker than the AA as they’re hand hammered and will generally be somewhat more expensive. Just to be clear, I’m not a Sabian shill. Lol. I’m a guy who long ago quit being loyal to any one brand and now use a mix of Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, Bosphorus, and Istanbul. I play whatever sounds good for the application.
awesome!!!!
