WORKSHOP: Arctic King / LG window unit: quick & dirty maintenance

  • It's July 17, it's 96°F today, and the forecast is calling for almost 100°F next week. We're not interested in ridges and 200 mb jets, we want to stay cool. So air conditioner maintenance is on the schedule for today. The Arctic King unit shown here was new in July 2014 and hadn't been serviced yet. Look how dirty they get after one year! The LG unit belongs to a friend. It was in worse condition and hadn't been serviced since 2011. It was working okay, but was leaking out the front due to the condensation drain being blocked by junk (filter not cleaned often enough).
    There are radiator fin cleaners you can use for this kind of job. I didn't have any of this cleaner on hand, so I went with just basic water and a little detergent (not filmed) this time around.

    Sorry to be critical, but much of that was just too close up to be helpful. My main reason for searching was to get the front off, so that I can easily clean the vents where the air comes out. It would have been good to have seen that a little farther back, too. But it's nice of you to put up this video

    Do you have any recommendations for this exact air conditioner that won’t make a small bedroom get cold? It use to work but now it barely make a room cold.

    I have the same unit. Mine is really pissing me off. It cools for awhile then the compressor shuts the f*ck off !! I am trying to use it as an additional AC because my central air can't keep up. I took it from the window and washed the hell out of it. Put it back in and still doing the same thing. Its hot as hell in here. I am about to go buy a new one and figure this out later. I am so angry. How can I just force my compressor to stay on??

    I got the same ac unit from Walmart last year. Both this summer, and last summer I've noticed my whole apartment smells like some strange toxic chemical when running the ac unit. I especially notice it after I've just gotten home since I've been out in much fresher air. But eventually my nose adjusts to the smell after I've been home for a while. But the smell is getting stronger. It's offensive and kind gives me a headache. It seems to be getting worse. I dunno if it'd be worth calling a mechanic. The warranty is up. I'm poor and don't want to have to get a new AC only to have the same problem again. What should I do?

    Take off the styrofoam too that in the front of the unit. Cover the electronics with a plastic bag so it doesn't get wet. Spray the front radiator with a cleaner, I use Clorox cleanup bathroom cleaner because it gets rid of the mildew instantly. Hose down the front radiator until no more mildew comes out. You can also use a stiff brush to clean it but only brush up and down. Clean the entire unit like this and put it back together making sure the electronics don't get wet. If they do, blow any water off with a vacuum cleaner until dry and let stand for an hour in the sun.

    Primordial growth. I use condensate tablets that kill bacteria. Second thing I do is drill the drain pan at lowest spot so no water pools. Some units are vented at top outside I made a baffel to keep small debris out of it. Also when opened check steel parts for rust. The accumulator before the compressor some times rusts a hole in it resulting in loss of refrigerant.

    my arctic king purchase on summer 2012, i just do what Tim does, yearly clean them out. and make sure you dont wet the control panel you can unscrew and wrap it up with plastic bag or any, .on the front and back condensers make sure its dry after cleaning (or spraying water) then spray degreaser start from top to bottom of condenser then wait 30 minutes then rinse by spraying water (only condenser nothing else using degreaser ) hope this help

      Thanks. I really wish there was a way to widen the water drain passage between the front and the rear of the unit. It seems these units clog at the end of each year, presumably from algae and mold, and then the unit starts flooding the window enclosure. When I've had the units open I've never seen a good way to access this drain gap. I'm starting to wonder if this is a means of forcing people into buying new units.

    So the LG and Arctic King have similar or identical designs?

    • @ForecastLab
      @ForecastLab  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From what I saw the general arrangement is very similar. On both of them you can't see the drainage hole so you just need to flush it out thoroughly.

    • @rogeliolopez2190

      Might be a short on the compressor or the thermostat was wet
      Remember that all the power is managed by the thermostat so if you wet it it will short and cause the plug to reset

    Just get coil foam spray and let sit on the coils for some minutes and hoes them down and only goes the coils and maybe the tray in the bottom and fans but try not to wet anything els u can do the case and let it dry for 24 hrs and don't have it plug in and use the coil cleaner 2 times rinse apply hoes and wait a few minutes and repeat 2 or 3 times

    I always drill a small hole in the lowest spot on that bottom pan for drainage. Not all units have them as they come.

    • @ForecastLab
      @ForecastLab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We considered doing this but I read that these designs use water to sling back onto the compressor coils to further cool it. I'm not an AC engineer so I can't comment on this but I'd advise looking into this further.

    • @goofynoodle4775
      @goofynoodle4775 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, definetly dont just go drilling holes in stuff! Mine says no water should be in it. And its hard to install at the correct angle...house is 100+ years old and .....excuses excuses.
