@@ayeshrandimasenadeera8199 its just that…. This isn’t an inspirational story. What Neiman went through is not ok. He broke up with his girlfriend because he wants to be “one of the greats”. This shows that he is obsessed rather than passionate. And he’d rather be famous than loved.
He gets into a car accident, and instead of going into the hospital, he enters the competition. This is not determination. This is taking his obsession over his own health. This is NEVER good.
I’m sorry but I don’t think this movie is something to aspire to. It begs the question “was it really worth it?” And the answer is no. You can be a great player and not suffer emotional trauma. Jazz players have actually seen this movie and commented that there is nothing wrong with neiman’s tempo.
Fletcher is just an abusive asshole who led his students to suicide.

@@ayeshrandimasenadeera8199 the director said in an interview “Andrew will be a sad, empty shell of a person and will die in his 30s of a drug overdose.”
The purpose of the movie is to ask the question “is success worth abuse?” And the answer is up for interpretation. But given that the director says that Andrew’s fate will be tragic, it makes me think that any teacher who physically assaults his students and drives them to suicide is a disgrace.
We must not see fletcher as an obstacle to overcome, but view him as a warning…. A symbolic representation of the myth that success comes from abuse; and ignore people like him in our lives before we end up like Neiman; and unhappy artist who will never be satisfied with his own work as he constantly puts his own health at risk and pushes away his friends and family.
Neiman is not someone we should aspire to be

The movie itself is incredibly well done. The acting, cinematography and directing are done amazingly. The problem is the fact that the actual music parts of it are so laughably inaccurate that it's borderline unwatchable for musicians. the easiest thing to point out would be how Fletcher counts off Whiplash, saying "5, 6, and" instead of the normal "uh 2 3 4", but the wider issue is that Fletcher's whole teaching style is just plain inefficient. Turns out that you can get a whole lot more done in a rehearsal if you don't spend half of it verbally abusing the band members. Plus, Fletcher would have been straight up fired almost immediately after the "not my tempo" scene, if not charged for aggravated assault. There have been band directors that were fired for much less. In the real world, Fletcher isn't some genius that pushes his students to greatness, he's just an asshole.

@@2004dale My main issue with the film is that Fletcher is a dogshit teacher (speaking from personal experience as a jazz musician), and his method of teaching is completely ineffective, so the main conflict of the film is completely pointless. There's also the fact that this movie is just a sports movie dressed up as a movie about jazz and is basically completely divorced from actual jazz culture.

i just finished the movie and basically the movie is about endrew wanting to become one of the great. The coach want to see how far he can push his students, so he push endrew to failure but like he said rather then quitting the next day you start again. at the end he wanted to do this, pushing andrew to failure but andrew came back and showed that he deserved to be great cuz he wont quit, he will keep coming back till he becomes great. I think fletcher is a horrible person.
If you play drums you will see that there was nothing wrong with his tempo.
He has no remorse for humanity. He finds out his student hanged himself so he LIES to his students and abuses them more. He sabotages neiman at the end.
Fletcher is a despicable human being.
And from the director’s mouth: “I think it's definitely a fleeting thing. I think there's a certain amount of damage that will always have been done. Fletcher will always think he won and Andrew will be a sad, empty shell of a person and will die in his 30s of a drug overdose. I have a very dark view of where it goes.”

Nothing about Whiplash is motivational at all, nothing about abuse is ever praiseworthy.
    Because I’ve been there too.
Back when I was in 10th grade, I was in the wrestling class. I was only approximately 120 Ibs at the time and underweight. One day early in the season, my collarbone and ribcage became misaligned. My arms horizontal movement became restricted due to the pain. I asked everyone; my coach, my teachers, my parents to help me see a Chiropractor. No one took me seriously. Because of this injury which I was forced to wrestle with or fail the class, I never won a single match.
I refuse to see this movie because I am afraid of reliving my own trauma. It’s because of this trauma I fail to understand how so many people including Chris Stuckmann can praise a work like this, and because I fail to understand I feel weak, incompetent, and outcast.
Success is never worth the cost of yourself.

This video doesn't really give you an accurate idea of what the movie's tone is (you are right, it's not motivational. It's not meant to be), I would describe the central question the movie poses as "Is all of this worth it?" and most people's answer is probably "no". I think you could actually really relate to the movie and it's themes. I don't think it's encouraging abuse, I think its moreso shining a light on it and asking questions. If you have trauma though, consider seeking professional help as it isn't going away on it's own (there are trauma focused therapies like CPT, TFCBT, & EMDR) and perhaps after that you may like the movie. Best of luck friend, I'm rooting for you.
