Test-pilot Tim's Calmato RC plane on 40% nitromethane

  • Tim said he needed more power, so we made up a batch of fuel with 40% nitro - but forgot to tell him. Amazingly, his Calmato survived the stresses but he did go through a few glowplugs. Nothing to see here except an ASP52 being ridden hard and put away wet.

    That's crack up
40 percent nitro was fair singing that asp 52
I will try a5 plugs or os 10 plugs next time
The mixture wound out unfortunately towards the end of the flight
If you want big nitro power viewers give a Chinese made asp52 ago.

That was wound out pretty tight by the sound of things. I think its best to start a bit rich on the settings until you get things running right. I replaced the Thunder tiger with an OS in my Kadet. I really dont know what my oil settings should be as of yet. I am going with rich. Sounds like you kept running out of fuel? That would lean it out too. The amount of oil would represent plenty of lube. I am not sure I would listen to Bruce. He is hard to read. He likes to joke mabe too much. I would hate it to cost an engine. You give them a real thrashing!

The reason it was stopping is it had number 8 plugs and they were burning out from the fuel Bruce made up

Those ASP 52's are indeed strong engines. I ran mine hard in a Phoenix Scanner, but with a more modest percentage of nitro in the fuel. The engine didn't miss a beat, sadly the Scanner suffered severe structural cracking from the speed & maneuvers, now temporarily retired awaiting repairs. But the ASP 52 lives on.

Os R5 plug.....especially with that much compression! Hey, get some 65% boat fuel while you're at it! This is why a .90-1.20 on 15% and a prop with more pitch than diameter is the way to go on a .40 sized overpowering project.

I have an Ultrastik ARF with a Thundertiger .47 and it was OK, on 10% fuel. One day, I decided to use my 1/2A fuel, 40% nitro. Holy cow.
But it had a kind of odd, mechanical cackle, at full bore. So I took the head off and shaved a bit off, reducing the compression ratio. That holy cow became a SAINT.
NOW, it would climb vertical, UNLIMITED.
Remember, adding more nitro advances the ignition timing and premature ignition will cost you power and be very hard on all the moving parts, especially the bushed rod. I learned this from a guy who calls himself, modelaircrafter. Check out his YT channel. Amazing,,,, conversions to diesel and even biodiesel.

    • @cmulder002
      @cmulder002 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Changing the prop (brand) also can increase performance and run without a spinner (or even a spinner nut) that also helps to gain a few rpm.

This SC engine is extremely noisy,, Shouldn't these engine should have a baffle plate in the expansion chamber to give the engine a little back pressure and moderates the noise, it will uses less fuel.
Bruce is the prop a tad on the small size? This baffle plate is round with many cupped hole pressed into the periphery with one in the centre for the long bolt which clamps these parts together.

Way too lean. With 40% nitro the fuel flow (and thus oil flow) should be significantly higher leading to tons of smoke regardless of oil used. From that clip there was barely any smoke from the exhaust which is a dead giveaway it’s super lean. Where was the ground high speed adjustment clip? If you’re gonna pull high g moves like that on high nitro you should back the high speed needle out 800-1000rpm from peak.
