We’re Marianne and Chris, a married couple from the UK. After some life changing events we decided that life was just too short. We sold all our belongings, bought an old Campervan & rented our house to travel full time. The aim is to attempt to visit every country in the world in either our van or with a backpack. We started videoing our travels for our family and then decided it was a wonderful way to document and share our adventures.
Our latest adventure started in January 2020 when we left the UK in an attempt to drive our van all the way around the world. Let the adventures continue.
The First World War and the War of Independence caused deep wounds in the hearts of the Turkish nation. And his pain will never pass. War is difficult for all countries involved in war. I can accept that. Our soldiers fought for days without sleep, hungry and miserable. And he only ate grape compote and 1 slice of dry bread. (1 day, only 1 meal). Our people gave their soldiers their own bread and food. All these are recorded in the archives of our country. Our soldiers fought in old shoes and uniforms. Too many of our people died in wars. Since there are no men left to join the war in our country, the children went to fight. In those years, many people in Turkey did not graduate from high school. Because the students died in the war. If you have seen the Turkish graves, the gravestones say that they are 14 or 15 years old. Not only soldiers died in the war; women, children, doctors, teachers, engineers died.When the wars were over, there were very few educated people and young people in our country. Only old people and small children remained. And of course, almost all the cities of our country were destroyed in the wars. We built a new and modern country from the wreckage and ashes of a country. Our war of liberation does not only remind us of our dead soldiers. It tells how difficult and valuable it is to own a country. For this reason, we are in love with every inch of land and flag of our country and our father Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. 500,000 people died in the Dardanelles war. We have songs sung for the Dardanelles war. Our people still have tears while singing those songs.
Çanakkale is not a city. It is the grave of 500,000 people. The tombs you visited are not real. Representation. It was difficult to reach the bodies of so many people. Representative graves were made. It's easy to find human bones or war bullets when you dig some soil in Gallipoli. 105 years have passed since the war. But it still hurts.
Çanakkale city is the only city where you can feel how bad the war was in your heart. There are many graves. I guess you haven't seen all of them. I cry every time I go to Gallipoli.

You constantly mention through your videos the generosity and graciousness of the Turkish people. How many countries would allow and keep such a memorial for so long to the fallen of an enemy.... my grandfather was there as an Australian, truly horrific until overtaken by the sheer incompetence and horror of the western front.
Me and my wife (She's Turkish) went to Gallipoli, a few years ago. Such a a beautiful place that hides the horrors that happened there.
It was moving to see the thousands of graves on both sides but wonderful how the Turkish authorities keep it so beautiful.
Whilst, we were there, I saw a memorial of two men from the Somerset Light Infantry, as I am originally from Somerset, I took a photo and later decided to research them. Amazingly, one of them was just 19 years old, drowned before even setting foot on dry land. What was remarkable for me though, was his address - it was right next door to my Grandparents home, long since passed away, in Sherborne Dorset.
It really brought it home to me. Rest in peace the soldiers on both sides who died, soldiers who although at war had tremendous respect for each other.

The aspect that impacts me the most is how the Turkish feel as deeply for the British and ANZAC fallen as for their own. What an amazing memorial the entire peninsula is.
It's war ,there is no winning there is only loss and both sides had so many loss. We share it thats all.
@@finitalacomedia3062 Still I don't think there are many nations in the world to erect memorials to the enemy who came to invade their land and killed hundreds of thousands of their own people. This only shows that we are aware those "enemy" soldiers were not there at their own will either and were just puppets of their politicians. This humane awareness and understanding of the Turkish nation towards the Battle of Gallipoli is truly something to be acknowledged and appreciated.
@@Snestorm564 yes an Imperial War that New Zealand got dragged into. NZ had the greatest loss of life among the allies per capita in that terrible war (well all wars are terrible). ANZAC Day, April 25, is a huge memorial day for us in NZ and many travel to Gallipoli on that day to pay respect to all of the fallen but we need to learn more here about the true loss for Turkey with all of those civilians as well. Hi Aaron - we knew this would be hard to share and as we said - we could only share our experience of a day visiting and driving around the peninsula ... the bird sounds at Shrapnel valley were recorded there, it was so shockingly peaceful and serene. We are grateful to share our experience and show the true love and friendship of the Turkish people - but as we said we can not possibly cover the whole story and do not feel we are the right people for the job anyway - Kind regards M xx

Those what you call “boats” were heavy battleships, and the attacking fleet was the strongest armada at that time. Well, the Turks are only friendly and welcoming to guests, not to invading armies! Thank you for another amazing vlog. War is hell!

Chris, you are absolutely correct when you talk about the people of Turkey being friendly and gracious. I have been fortunate to visit Turkey 11 times now and have been amazed at how wonderful most of these people really are. I have also been to Canakkale and Gallipoli however on foot with a rucksack. A wonderful city and a huge dedicated sight to the fallen soldiers. I understand the sacrifice of the the folks down-under and all of the British colonies at that time however your video does not mention fallen Canadians who are also immortalized at Gallipoli. They were mostly from Newfoundland and for the most are not often recognized in Canada either, which is why I had to go and pay respects. Thanks for the video well done.

Russell Crowe's film " The Water Diviner" is about the War...and those soldier who died on both side were mostly children, aged 14-15..
Yes I watched that movie ...sorry but not informative or have good script as 1981 movie Gallipoli which had better research as well .

Thank you so much for this post. My husbands grandfather was in the British Navy at this battle, he was shipwrecked but lucky enough to be picked up by another ship. He eventually ended up in a mental facility in St Helens, Lancs. Suffering from shell shock.

I do not think any negative remarks are necessary, because he mentioned clearly that he is NOT a historian and simply showed where the battle took place and the graves of the soldiers who lost their lives (may they all R.I.P). I do NOT take offense to the fact that he did not show any graves of the courageous Turkish soldiers (may they all R.I.P.). Because of his English background he looked at it from his perspective, so I respect that! Chris also showed at 10:06 the consoling words of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (R.I.P.) to the mothers of all fallen foreign soldiers and at 18:46 what Turkish and Anzac soldiers have experienced. I missed the Mehmetçik monument to be honest. Hundreds of thousands of Turkish soldiers are lying there under the ground😔
In order to defend the homeland, Turkey has lost more than half of it's young people in Gelibolu/Çanakkale. Not only men, also women and children died in a large number there. If we hadn't defended ourselves in Çanakkale and repulsed the invasion/Occupation attempt, we wouldn't be free and we wouldn't have an independent homeland now. The meaning of Çanakkale is equivalent to existence for us Turks. Therefore we were hoping to see the Turkish memorial as well

Beautiful Turkey! Every inch of this land is worth a visit. I am from Bosnia and have visited many cities and towns in Turkey, but it is never enough. Every time you can discover something new and beautiful. I recommend traveling by car. Traveling by plane and staying only in resorts is not good for getting to know a country.

The war had dramatic results: The UK stepped down as a world power. The Russian Empire collapsed. The Turkish Republic has emerged from collapsing Ottoman Empire.
Unless a nation's life faces peril, war is murder. -Atatürk There is someone lost at Çanakkale in almost every single Turkish family. Those monuments are there to teach all of us to never having to write another story of Gallipoli again.

Thank you for sharing the video.I means a lot to me.My grandfather's father (İsmail Çavuş) was a soldier and died in Gallipoli during the war.As Atatürk wrote, 'they have become our sons ,aswell' Ataturk,he was a great soldier,great leader. He died on 10.11.1938,that's why there are lot's of flags every where in your previous video and the this one. He still lives in our hearth.
I always cry, when I read the letter of Ataturk and hear songs written after the war, I can not stop myself. We suffered from war a lot, that's why, for world war 2, in that time president was İnönü, he did anything to not involved with the war.

unfortunately, Mr. Churchill brought all the young men there and left them there alone!!! On the other hand, before came to fight in Gallipoli. he also did not give 2 battleships after the built-in UK for Turkish which was already paid by Ottoman taxpayers!! A few things to note.
You said that if Anzacs landed a bit north of Anzac cove, they would have a better luck.
Well, it is not correct.
Anzacs did not try to land at the Anzac cove only!
After their failed attempts at Anzac Cove, they also initiated a major landing offensive north of Anzac Cove, called Suvla bay.
Overall, there were three major battle fronts during land portion of Canakkale (Gallipoli) war:
- Seddulbahir (Cape Helles) southernmost point of Gallipoli peninsula, where British landed
- Ari Burnu (Anzac Cove) where Anzacs landed
- Anafartalar (Suvla bay area) where Anzacs and British landed
None of these major offensive initiatives were successful.
With the heroic efforts of Turkish soldiers and the leadership provided by Ataturk, Turks managed to repulse back all allied attempts.
For the note, Ataturk played a very prominent role and was a major factor at both Ari Burnu (Anzac Cove) and Anafartalar (Suvla bay) battles.
And about the impact of Gallipoli campaign. Perhaps you might be forgiven due to your lack of knowledge when saying that these battles did not have any significant impact, but that is not correct.
- Around 500,000 thousand soldiers has lost their lives (almost equally shared as 250,000 to 240,000 between allied forces and ottoman Turkish soldiers)
- Gallipoli was the scene where Ataturk raised as a hero of the Turkish nation and later enabled him to rally the Turkish nation and establish a whole new country of modern Turkey (when the Ottoman empire collapsed right after WWI)
- The government of George Llyod in England had to resign
- Due to the failure of allies at Gallipoli, the WWI war has been prolonged by up to two years according to some historians
- British and French was unable to send help to Russians which caused the increasing of suffering of Russian people during WWI and
it was one of the major contributing factors to the October 1917 revolution in Russia
- British empire suffered their first defeat and that tarnished their image of invincibility
- That became an examples to many nations under British yoke and gave them hope for their own independence.
Gallipoli (Canakkale) has taken its place in the minds and hearts of all Turks and will continue to play its role to remind us the value of our independence. We feel utter respect for and proud of all those who were martyred at Gallipoli and we will remember them until the last days of our lives.

which is where thousands of homelands's hearts beat

Hi just subscribed. I lived in Gelibolu for seven months working on that new bridge. I operated the cranes on the towers on the Asian and European sides . About 320 metres high . It will be the longest span in the world of 2000 metres . We loved Turkey can’t wait to go back

The trenches were so close, they would throw packets of cigarettes to each other at night.
Whenever I visit here I sense a great deal of sadness. It's peaceful but there's something I can't put my finger on.
Beautifully maintained ANZAK memorials by the looks of it.
You're doing a fantastic job at presenting Turkey in a positive light.
Having previously visited there and knowing others who've been there. It was a place I'd planned to avoid in future.
Now I've reconsidered. Turkey looks beautiful and the people there seem lovely. They also have snakes which makes it even better. Great video again.

İts Çanakkale 1915 Bridge and with a main span of 2,023 m (6,637 ft), the bridge will surpass the Akashi Kaikyō Bridge in Japan by 32 m (105 ft) to become the longest suspension bridge in the world. Some symbolic figures are associated with the bridge. The name "1915" and the groundbreaking date "March 18" are related to the Turkish Naval Victory on March 18, 1915 during the naval operations in the Gallipoli Campaign. The length of the bridge's main span with "2,023" meters refer to the centennial of the Turkish Republic in 2023.

So the answer to the eternal question " Why did the chicken cross the road" "Because a little girl was chasing it" 😂 so now we know!. It is always sad when you visit these memorial sites. I could feel your remorse for the fallen soldiers on both sides of the conflict it is sad also it is good that we honour them as we do for there courage in what they had to face. As long as we never for get and try to live in peace with one another. Watching your vlogs I feel as ordinary people we can do, the love that you have been shown on this fantastic adventure from people of all nationalities we do love each other as human beings. Fantastic job of showing those war memorials, you did that justice. So emotional, those guys really do feel so close to us, hope we are doing them proud, and for what they did, people like you travelling the world freely show they did have some justice in giving what they gave.

Beautiful Gallipoli, wonderful memorial to those who fought and lost their lives - beautifully maintained by the Turks - as Mustafa Kemal Ataturk says : your sons are now lying in our bosom. They are in peace and will lie here in peace. That was a very important war for the Turks as it started Ataturk’s mission for our independence and freedom. A very bad move by Churchill to go to the Dardanelles.
There is a very simple reason why the troops landing in Anzac cove were attacked heavily: they attacked the territory of another country. I am proud of my ancestors that they made a very strong defense in Gallipoli. Everyone defends their own land. If there is another big war today, I am ready to fight. On the other hand, it's a pretty dramatic situation. Thousands of young people died in their twenties on both sides. This is a very sad situation. The military profession in Turkey is very difficult nowadays. Even if the salary is good, the conditions are quite tough ...
*Hiiiiii... Trudy & Chris ... Thx very much for another enlightening video ... Seems things have changed since I have been there in 1992 > lot more organised and maintained ... A new visitors centre was built reflecting the modern view of museums better than the small one under that giant memorial called ABIDE built in 1950s ... I would suggest you watch the 1981 movie Gallipoli I think making of it is on TH-cam quite good script & camera work as well ... It shows the original Anzac Cove before the road was built 40 years ago... Then I hired a local taxi and he guided me through the important locations and brought me back to the town for a bus to Istanbul ... But I see that you are going back to Canakkale on the mainland I guess you dont want to miss Troy since you come thus far ... Good Luck - will be watching your next journey for sure ...*

There is currently a bridge construction. It's called the 1915 Bridge. However, it will open on 18 March 2022 in honor of the day we won the war on 18 March 1915. With love..

Very moving video, thankyou., all the war cemeteries seem to be beautifully kept. We were in Thailand a few years ago on Anzac Day and it was also very moving to see the wreaths left in honour.

Çanakkale is a very impressive place. When we built our caravan ourselves, this was the first place we wanted to go. We went at the end of June.
We were in the same place at the end of June, Bumerang. But It was closed and there was nobody.

Looks nice there. And so sad to hear that so many lives were lost there . The Australians and other countries who ended up there by accident. Bless them. War is not nice. We should all really learn to get on and work together as teams. As we are all on this planet earth together and need to learn to live together. God gave us this land and everything in it. It isn't for no man to take that away. God bless all those men children and women who died back then.

Hi Gulsum, As we said ... we could not possibly cover the whole peninsular in one day and it was tricky to find all of the sights as there are so many and not all of them sign posted - I would deffo recommend going as a group on a tour with people who know where everything was - as we said we are not historians , but we showed our experience and always will do - kind regards Marianne

Why you are saying heavy attack? You should say defense. They attacked our country, people and lands? What they were should do? The students in our high school (15-16-17 years old) could not graduate because they went to war. l I am disappointed
Hi Atakan, In the video we were referring to the allied forces and so it was correct that as they landed they did come under attack. We are fully aware that Turkey was defending itself and if we were talking about the Turkish forces we would have referred to defence. It was a terrible time in history.
There is a wonderful song which commemorates the Battle of Gallipoli Called Waltzing Matilda, available on youtube, sums up the futility of war.
Watching this video reminded me of a great movie WATER DIVINER. Directed by Russel Crowe. If you haven’t watched it please do watch it.

Thanks for the video was great to see some of the terrain there, had quite a few relatives that fought there one that landed on the 25th was 15 years old he enlisted with 3 mates they lied about the age to join he was the only one of them that survived Gallipoli. He was with the 13th Australian battalion
