This was one of the more helpful videos on mango I have found. There are a lot of people who say don’t let your mango tree flower for at least 2-3 years and while that might make for a good generic answer it doesn’t tell the whole story. Then I watch Dr. Richard Campbell talk about getting your mango in a productive mode rather excessive vigor mode and he has some fairly small trees he lets fruit. So then I’m uncertain what to do? At a previous property I did all I could to get my mango (Manila) to grow tall which included removing fruit for the first 2-3 years. And within 5 years or so it was at least 15feet tall. It produced some relatively small fruit before I moved. As much as any healthy mango tree is good, I would prefer to have a smaller tree that produces heavy crops than a massive tree. So now I have 3 new trees that I planted over the past 3 years. The most recent ‘Fruit Punch’ I planted this past spring. The fruit punch is currently about chest high and is throwing out new panicles this week on every terminal branch. I think I will let the panicles develop another week or two and then cut them as you demonstrated. I am uncertain yet whether I will let any fruit develop but if I do it will only be one or two. Again, thanks for going into depth of flower management on each size tree.

I have a Timatoyo dwarf mango. It is thriving !. Now 2 years in the ground. approximately - 5’ T - 4’ W. Flowers are forming now (Feb 11). I’ll prob. remove 90% of the flowers. I desire the height and width of the canopy to increase more then the fruit this year. Year 3 will be its first true crop year 🥭. I’m in Los Angeles Ca. I Highly recommended this tree. Especially in situation where available space is limited. Enjoyed about 7 mangos last year. Although they were small in size last year (less then 2”) they were absolutely delicious !
We had two mango trees in our yard in the Philippines. One trunk was about two foot in diameter and one was just a little smaller and about 25-30 foot high🤗🥭
What is the name of the Philippine mango, she just named them but, not knowing what kind. Philippine mango or Mexican mango are the best and expensive. Thank you

Philippine mango, Mexican mango was brought over from the Philippines and the Carabao mango is what it's called in the Philippines they are the sweetest juiciest mangos and small pail yellow. Occasionally we can buy them here at the Asian store in Biloxi but they are like $3.00 a piece. In the Philippines we use to buy them for 30php Philippine pesos a kilo. That was about 60¢ for 2.2 lbs

I had them last year. I did not let them develop into fruits., they just shriveled and grew faster. I figured the root system was not yet developed to supply the needs of new fruit, this year I will get a few..

My parents have a big mango tree (25-30 feet tall) but have very few flowers even 3 years after it has been trimmed although there are abundant new branches have grown after the trimming with lots of healthy leaves. What fertilizer will help the mango trees to bloom?

Wow what an inspiration your videos and explanations are. To the point that I now have now a whole gaggle of little grafted mangos that seem precocious in their premature seeming flowerings. I live in Southern California and have had shipped to me all the way from south Florida -- driving my wife absolutely nuts -- but I say, on the other hand that, SHE'S nuts. Now let me see, paying close attention to the ever remarkable Har, I've collected Lemon Zest, Orange Essence, Orange Sherbet, Fruit Punch, Coconut Creme, Ice Cream, Cotton Candy, Keitt, Carrie, Alphonse, Kesar, Nam Doc Mai and I do think I am beginning to forget much of my inventory, but the most recent a 15 gallon so-called Haden seedling, but when perusing this local grower's bunch of 15 gallons I checked out one much shorter than all the rest AND with a conspicuous graft and the white words "Glen" with just one "n", not two, upon the side of a 15 gallon pot, and I pointed this mystery out to the grower and he was totally clueless, so I bought this 15 gallon, allegedly Glenn, but when I dug a hole for it, well most of the plain old fashioned garden dirt (no amendments at all), well this dirt fell away copiously, leaving but a very small root structure, and I, at wits end, simply cut ALL the leaves off of it (this was PAINFUL to my soul, held the grafted yet nearly rootless "Glenn" suspended with one arm over the middle of the hole I had dug to accomodate a far larger root system and filled it back up around this puny root system with highly ammended soil. Obviously then I has showed no leaf shock, but I've no idea whether this baby will pull through in the end. What do you think its chances are. I ALSO pruned off quite a lot of the lateral branches. Yes, maybe my wife is correct about my lack of sanity, after all. It is a kind of delectable madness.

I have a question for Chris or anyone that knows, we purchased a potted Keitt mango tree that was about 3 feet tall and it was left unattended in the pot for about 8 months and it grew real tall (approx. 7 feet), no low branches, a long trunk and only branches on the very top; because we have a small area assigned for this tree we wouldn’t want a tall large tree, how can I prune it to get lower branches and keep it small? I'm starting to have trouble with my beautiful 23 year old mango tree...the past 2 years my fruit started getting mushy in the center then this year I had a ton of blooms but all the fruit fell off I think I only got maybe 6 mangoes this year. About 4 or 5 years ago the city cut 1/4 of my tree off due to it growing into the above lines. I don't recall the name of my tree but they were really big colorful mangoes and the best I've ever eaten. I'm so sad my tree is having trouble now. Any ideas for me to help it please? Thank you!! I do have a Kent seed from the store potted right now. I've never been able to get a seed started in the soil after germinating in bags. Just little personal tests I've been doing.
I live in Sicily, we got really hot summers here, I tried many times growing mangos by seeds but after the 3/4 set of leaves they all just stop growing and eventually die, I always gave them all the attentions but nothing so I ultimately decided to buy a 2 year old grafted tree, it is really doing great and I'm making lot of cuttings every year, they all are growing really nice!

What kind of soil do you use? We tested all of the bagged soil that we found in garden centers, and none was good for mangos. That soil is good for flowers and vegetables. Mangos can tolerate some very wet conditions, but they do much better in soils that don't hold water for too long. Sand and/or perlite in the potting soil helps.

I'm confused and hope you can help. I have a dwarf hawaiian tree. I was told temp below 50° f are bad for it. You said weather was getting down to 40, do you protect your trees?
We know of no reason that Ataulfo trees should be treated differently than other mango trees. Fertilizing young trees can be done in several ways. Some people use time release fertilizer according to directions. (Some last longer than others.) Other people use granular palm or citrus and avocado fertilizer available in garden centers. Since your tree is only 2 years old, the timing of fertilization would mostly be influenced by weather. In general, you shouldn't fertilize before expecting cold weather.

I have the same questions. I have two seeds from jumbo mangos (type unknown, but very sweet!) that are in the rooting stage in baggies. Some of Chris' trees show a slight bulge near the ground that, I think, indicate grafts. I'd also like to know if there is a certain phase the tree needs to be at for transferring to the next larger pot. I'm in Tucson, AZ, and hope mine will grow to maturity.

I was wondering if, when a mango is too small to hold fruit, instead of allowing the young mango tree to flower, you could instead use a plant growth regulator like Florel to inhibit flowering entirely? Do you know if anyone has tried this on mangoes? Do the trees grow faster because less energy goes into flowering, or does the stress caused by using the PGR also prevent growth? Thank you!

If you're planting a seed, the tree can sometimes take more than 10 years to fruit. Most mango trees do not need another mango tree in the area for pollination
We use time release fertilizer and foliar sprays for our potted plants. Potting soil also provides some nutrition. Fish emulsion is a great way to provide nutrients to your plants. We don't use fish emulsion, but you can see the results 0f using fish emulsion on the videos we did with Karim.
Love your videos. I live in Orlando FL and I have an in the ground eight year old 'East Indian' variety that bore a lot of mangos last year. The tree is blooming abundantly right now but as you know we just had a three day cold spell where temperatures dipped into the low forties, high thirties where I'm at. The Carabao is the local beast of burden the same thing as the water buffalo.

I would recommend that you pot it in 7 gallon and not in 15 gallon at this point

K-Mag or 0-3-16... Try to avoid giving it nitrogen because of it's size and the time of year

If you want to keep your tree in the same size pot, you can repot by trimming the roots and the branches.

Grafting is not cheating though. It just ensures you will get fruit and good yielding fruit at that if I'm not mistaken.

We will do a video on soil soon, but the mix we use has coarse sand, peat and small hardwood pieces.

yes they are grafted. Some years we apply granular K-Mag, and we spray with OMRI products to encourage and protect bloom (Potassium and Sulfur)

Some of Chris' trees show a slight bulge near the ground that, I think, indicate grafts. I'd also like to know if there is a certain phase the tree needs to be at for transferring to the next larger pot. I'm in Tucson, AZ, and hope mine will grow to maturity.

I was wondering if, when a mango is too small to hold fruit, instead of allowing the young mango tree to flower, you could instead use a plant growth regulator like Florel to inhibit flowering entirely? Do you know if anyone has tried this on mangoes? Do the trees grow faster because less energy goes into flowering, or does the stress caused by using the PGR also prevent growth?

If you're planting a seed, the tree can sometimes take more than 10 years to fruit.
Most mango trees do not need another mango tree in the area for pollination

What type of fertilizer you used and NPK specifications?
We use time release fertilizer and foliar sprays for our potted plants. Potting soil also provides some nutrition.
Fish emulsion is a great way to provide nutrients to your plants. We don't use fish emulsion, but you can see the results 0f using fish emulsion on the videos we did with Karim.

Love your videos. I live in Orlando FL and I have an in the ground eight year old 'East Indian' variety that bore a lot of mangos last year. The tree is blooming abundantly right now but as you know we just had a three day cold spell where temperatures dipped into the low forties, high thirties where I'm at. What do you think are my chances of getting fruits this year?
It's possible that the cold might have killed the bloom. If it did, your tree might bloom again.

In some circumstances, seedling mangos can fruit in 3 years. In this video, all of the flowering mango trees were grafted.
