- We make a return to the Highlands again in the motorhome to search for Red Squirrels and Pine Martens. After last time when I only caught a fleeting glimpse of the elusive Pine Marten I was really excited to try again. In this first film of three made on this trip hopes were high as we crossed to border into Scotland and the weather forecast was superb. Join me to see if I succeeded in capturing the footage that I was desperate to get.

Nice vlog Simon. I visited Plas Newdd in anglesey last week to photograph red squirrels but only saw a few. They were really timid. I live in the North West and was planning to visit Ainsdale. Didn't realise about the disease.. great photos thankd for sharing !!
Yeh, theyre pretty shy creatures for sure. Might be worth checking on the Ainsdale situation before you go. 👍🏼

I’m also going over to photograph otters but just round from craignure in a day or two,we might bump into each other
Great video,the red squirrel was nice to see.Hope you get some nice footage of the Otters on mull, not long been back my self from Mull and the first time seeing the otters and lucky enough to get some nice pictures.Have a great trip.

Aww man them pine marten shots are awsome your making me well jealous i'm not up there for another couple of months yet, dam them midgies are a right pain ive already had a dose of them the other week and then the other day i was bitten by blumin horse flies them things hurt lol.
Thanks Andy, were back up in September hopefully. The midges are a pain in the ass but they seemed to come and go. Its them damned clegg flies that get me. They land without you feeling them and then they take a chunk!!😂😄

I recently spent the day at a wildlife hide here in Ireland... wonderful place.. huge variety of birds and wildlife but just like you the pine smarten was a no show.. I was so gutted as they were the main reason I went but I will be going back so fingers crossed for next time

Hi Simon, crackin pictures I hardly ever seen a pine marten when i lived in Scotland and i fished Invernesshire a lot, I never realised that here in Rhodes there is a huge population of Martens and the only time i see them here is dead on the road unfortunately, seen them fleetingly walking the dog, never quick enough with the camera, maybe i'll build a hide!. Atb Will.

Wow, this footage is awesome Simon, sorry Ive just came across this one Im lucky Im in a red stronghold in West Cumbria, but cant get footage like this, need to change tactics a bit to get the backlit shots, though I do have footage of a red arguing with my tripod. Do you ever use a microphone when taking video or always put the music on if so what type of mic? I've a few clips where you can hear the reds splitting hazelnut shells, by gnawing around them
Thanks Andi, its something I need to look into a bit more regarding the audio. Certain species lend themselves to audio recording but the quieter birds I tend to put an audio soundtrack over them. Good luck with your squirrel project 👍🏼
