    'Ice Machine' is the best demo in this collection. You can see an early OMD/Human League influence on these songs. Andy Fletcher's actual bass guitar work is phenomenal on these songs.

      Yeah. Completely surprised that it was a demo.
      And to think that they were so young at the time that the demo was released…plus from what I heard that Dave himself had NO idea what he was getting into during that audition…

    Fascinating to hear their first demos! I love all the music that came out of the turmoil of 1970s and blossomed into the early 80s

    • @MarioSalimon
      @MarioSalimon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed. It's way more interesting - although not as polished - as the developments that came out in the 80s. I liked reading Mars By 1980, about electronic music's history, and listening to a historical string of electronic music in just a few hours. One can easily connect this Depeche Demo to music that was being made by the end of the 1950s.

    You can clearly hear how Vince was inspired by The Cure/Robert Smith when singing on "Television Set" 1:48. There's a couple of interviews on YT where he describes how their 1979 debut "Three Imaginary Boys" was a major reason for him getting into music. Funny how two of my absolute favorite bands were more connected than I ever thought back then.

      Is it some feeling of being connected to the past? Or are you a musician/ aritist yourself and creating stuff on your own?
      I'm making music myself and I feel I'm in the same process as my idols like Depeche Mode, so it connects me to their phase when they were in their beginnings

      @@Marc_Tittmann yeahh. You really got it. I thought like no one will ever feel the same like me.. but here you are. Ofcrs yeah, i'm a musician and the music i make is highly inspired by them, in addition i'm only 18 just like they used to be on early 80s when they just started releasing their singles. I think that feeling you can never have it until you're a musician who's trying to make your work getting famous like your favorites artists/bands used to do at the beginning of their careers!

    I can't help but feel that the final recorded versions on Speak And Spell have lost some of the punk energy on show here, which I find surprising given Daniel Miller's general credentials at the time. The Vince Clarke demos sound great with his voice on them. I can only wonder at what would have happened if they had found a more punk orientated label with these demos instead of Mute.

It is very similar to a john peel session. except? instead of three to six songs? it is a full length album with all of the songs from this cassette tape! including multiple singles, b-sides & demos I have never heard of before on the radio? or on depeche mode's vinyl lp's & records? it also comes with some live tracks from their very first live gigs in the uk!
